Killed CPU :( New 3570k or 3770k?

Yeah fishing line would be better. Don't want it minty now do we :D.

To be fair I would have thought it would work even without solvent. As soon as you get under a corner it should work fine.

If I had a cpu that's not soldered I'd try it.

Unless if anyone knows are the old school Intel core duos are soldered? I've got about 6 of them floating round so if happily sacrifice one for research. E8400/E5300to be precise.

Actually even if it is soldered it's only the glue on the ihs that matters isn't it? Obviously if it is soldered it will kill the chip but still proves theory.

I'm sure if it's soldered , it has a hole in corner of the HS for pressure balance . Not sure if this is valid in older chips ... But 5820k, solder and a hole so presumably

they are soldered. dunno if glued as well.

The only non soldered chips are Ivybridge and haswells, and tbh I'm not gonna experiment on mine.:D

All were soldered up until ivybridge

Fishing line won't be thin enough IMO,best way I've seen is hammer and vice, metal blade is very risky the CPU's PCB actually bends when using one

I wonder what the glue is made up of and what would remove it. I sold a 4770k on here a while back. The ihs was a bit encrusted with liquid metal. The new owner got it cleaned back very nicely using an isopropyl jet wash. Wonder if this would work on the glue. It seems to soften when heated a bit too.

You were right setter it did need a solvent. Bit of IPA and some oral B and a minute later I've got a freshly minted chip :D. It's a bit tricky to get under the IHS but chews through the glue easily afterwards.

Sorry about the score across the top I wanted to see how easy it was to scratch with a blade in retrospect I should have taken the pic first for show and tell :D.

(Still works :D. It doesn't appear this one was soldered :confused)

im surprised they used paste on those dual cores, didnt think they started till ivy

and well done with the floss,i did try some strong cotton thread on mine but it wasn't working

Only thing I will say is as floss goes across the entire chip when sawing through I wonder if those VRMs(?) on the more modern chips are at risk not sure if they're taller than the chip.

Definitly needed the vice though. That tiny chip was impossible to hold and delid at the same time.

Patented method anyone who uses it owes me a penny :D.

If floss works on Haswells, that sounds by far the savest method to me. No chance of cutting the pcb, no chance of knocking any capacitors off the pcb.

I could be tempted in due time...

Looks like someones just found the new way to delid :)

Maybe this will be the end of people killing their chips trying to fix intels design.

You lead mate, i might follow.:D

Let us know how it goes.

Obviously to protect my backside I'm going to say I definitely do not recommend using floss or delidding your chip at all. Just because I was brave (stupid) enough to do it doesn't mean you should.

However if it does work I want my 1p, if it doesn't I told you not to :D.
