Kitten$$$$

Our cat was free. A friend of a friend's cat got pregnant and they just gave them away. Got him chopped and chipped and has been good for the past 8 years.

I love my cat but its only use is pest control. Such selfish little beasts :p. No idea why anyone would pay large wedge for one.

A dog is completely different as they are man's best friend.

There are soo many dogs and cats in shelters needing homes. people breeding them take the absolute ****, but the people buying them only have themselves to blame so whatever.

£650 for an exotic like ours

My family has never paid for a cat or a dog other than donations to shelters. Please consider a rescue/shelter pet rather than a pedigree/farmed pet.

My friend bought a British Blue (Shorthair) kitten a couple of years ago for £550 and according to him it's honestly it's the best money he has ever spent in his life. It is true though, I've had a number of cats in my life and his one is the best ever... by a long shot.

The seller had about 6 kittens... so a nice little side business.

I advised my friend to get another and do the same... breed them to make extra ££... he declined, but when I get my own house I think I might do just that!

Errrm you do know that is incest and the kittens would likely have a lot of issues and live a life of misery as a result may even have to be put down as they progress.

It's okay though you will make a few quid before anyone notices.

I'd love a British Blue or Scottish Fold (looks very similar but ears are folded), I think they are the cutest ones!

This.

Sad there were so many replies before anyone even posted this :(

Double this.

Buying from a breeder is just fuelling a problem of animal exploitation e.g. breeding animals to sell for profit.

Can't help but agree with this, whilst we'd love a pedigree dog I don't like the idea of someone capitalising on the increase in demand for a pet - would much rather give a home to a dog from a shelter (and save on the bank balance too!)

Glad someone finally said it.

Was quite shocked to see someone saying they encouraged a friend to breed cats as a side earner earlier in the thread too...

Wake up.

Breeding cats and dogs should be banned. There are more than enough animals in shelters in need of a home.

I don't think he was implying getting another from the same source/litter, lol!

Yep and in doing so that animal is saved from likely being euthanised. There are already too many animals in shelters, there's no need to go out and buy them from animal breeders/farmers.

Agree so much with this. Our childhood cat was abandoned as part a litter of kittens - left in a stairwell in a tower block in Birmingham - found by a family friend; one made it's way to us. Wouldn't come out from under the sofa for a whole week. Went on to live for 18 happy years.

I find something deeply unpleasant about a £3k family fashion pet from an amateur breeder.

My 8 week old kitten was £45. I've generally seen Tabby/Tom's for sale in the usual places for around the £50 mark. Paying anymore than that is people taking the mick in my opinion, unless it's a pedigree ofcourse.

Absolutely this. The websites advertising kittens and puppies from ameteur hour breeders who probably bought theire pets to seeminlgy exploit them for kittens / puppies.

Makes me sick.

Completely this.

I inherited a cat from my late mum last year. The cat is quite elderly and my mum got her from a rescue shelter quite a few years ago. When she eventually passes away I think I'd love another cat. But it will be from another shelter. She's so loving to us now and responds so well to any love we give her that it breaks my heart to think of animals being mistreated. If we can offer a happy and loving life to another shelter animal in the future then I'll do so.
