Knife Sets

Before you buy your mum knives are you sure she wants them for xmas? only asking because my children are banned from getting me anything for the kitchen for xmas, I'm not being mean to them it's just that if i needed a knife i would buy one, xmas is a time for personal pressies.

I recommended it in another post and i shall here too, for a decent set of knives for the home, you cannot beat TK Maxx, decent set of sabatiers etc for about £45 complete with block. I personally use the finest knives (IMO) money can buy, Shuns but then i'm a chef so i would :D

overpriced though due to being the "in thing"

They are expensive but they are for a reason. They are the best knives I have used. Like anything it's all down to personal feel.

Buying sets of knives are money wasted anyway. You only need to buy a decent chefs knife and a smaller vegatable knife anyway. The rest are padding to look good.

Immature..but

I think it was the word boning

Can anyone recommend a good knife sharpener?
My one. Sabatier. Get used to what is good steel and what isn't by the colour and feel and don't buy a crappy one like a Kitchen Devils or your knife will shave it bald.

I use the chantry knife sharpener...

It's not as good as being able to do it yourself with a steel but I just plull it through once before use and the blades stay sharp. Its a far better option than ruining an expensive knife with my poor sharpening skills.

I keep meaning to buy a cheap blade to practice with.

I can recommend Global, amazing knives. Though as for sharpening implements i believe that some japanese brands (including Global) are set at a different angle, so it is generally best to buy specialist sharpening tools. E.g. The Minosharp.

Another vote for TK Maxx. Bought my mum some Sabatiers for Mother's Day and she loves them. Tend to be about half the RRP as well.

just looked at the global knives in John Lewis, they really do look rather nice, but £50 for a knife lol, having said that i still mite buy one
