Korean Grand Prix 2010, Korean International Circuit - Race 17/19

Having watched the highlights it still wasn't much of a race, but the reactions of the Ferrari chap, then the McLaren garage to Vettel's Renault engine biting the big one was worth a laugh. :D

I'm glad that Kobayashi (now my second favourite driver after Button) survived Sutils amateur night antics, and as a bonus the Beardmeister got 10th.

Another bonus were those Korean grid girls, who were rather nice ;).

So was it vettels no8 engine that expired, it doesn't matter matter because he can put in any servicable engine 1-7 in?

I take it they will run one of the engines in friday practice now and then switch the engine over night to another engine to even out the mileage?

He'll have a good few engines available, but the milage on each will vary considerably - there are probably at least two with race milage available - but they'll probably limit FP3 running to preserve the engine as much as possible to ensure (as much as possible) it completes the race - they have to use the same engine in FP3, Quali and the race.

FP1 and FP2 sessions can use the remaining marginal engines - if they expire it's no big deal other than loss of running.

The same applies to most people though.

One other thing to look at is Heidfeld will surely have to use a 10th engine at the next race as his car has used the 9th engine for 4 races already.

I pretty sure you're first point is correct. However, I'm not sure if they can swap out the engine after practice. I would hope (for any team) as they should be running the same engine for the weekend.

Webber is still favourite, he can win in brazil and abu d.

Hmmm.

The best F1 driver in the World, is in a competitive car and is leading the title race by 11 points.

Do you honestly believe that Webber has any chance of winning the title now?

Seriously guys, Webber is nothing more than an average driver. This year he raised his game (to an above average driver). However, even when he is at his best, he still isn't able to compete with a top line driver (Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton).

I've said from the start that Alonso would be the top scoring driver in the 2nd half of the season. I also stated that Alonso would win the title this year (pre-season prediction). I also stated that Vettel would finish this year's title race ahead of his team-mate.

I see no reason for me to change those predictions.

Of course he has a great chance. He's in a far better situation for engines than anyone else. Chances are Alonso will take a penalty at some point in the next two races.

Not only that Red Bull is by far the fastest car. Now Alonso is far far better than any other driver but he can only do so much. Webber can win a grand prix and have vettel behind him to take serious points off Alonso.

You will not see though Alonso win a gp and Massa taking points off a red bull. Same for Hamilton and button.

If Red Bull want a drivers title a red bull 1-2 and Alonso leads by a point if he comes third. If Red bull have Vettel back Webber I'd say they will beat Alonso easily.

You like to cover the bases with your predictions by backing both angles. You also wrote Alonso off earlier in the season as no longer the 'daddy' and a disapointment this season.

this is the problem, with 2 aces to go Webber has 14 points over vettel, if Vettel wins next GP, webber has either got to DNF or got to come 5th, and even then Vettel only will have one point over him.

If Red Bull get a 1-2 in the next race and mclaren keep alonso out of the top 4, webber might have a chance, but they could end up shooting themselves in the foot by trying to get vettel the points whose 24 points adrift.

Webber won the last Brazilian GP didn't he?
I honestly think if Webber gets himself into the lead they will make Vettel hold station and protect his lead.

I think red Bull could easily make this a webber title by picking up two easy 1-2's but will Red Bull will throw it away having Mark push much harder than is needed to try to beat his team mate?

That car is easily 0.5-0.7 faster than anything else in normal dry conditions.

Alonso made the difference today because he was able to manage his tyres and still maintain pace. He would have beaten Vettel even if his engine hadn't expired.

He had just run wide and lost a second to Alonso so he wasn't maintaining a gap, more like trying to hold on.

For the most part, you can only get a rough idea of which engine was used unless a team comes out and says the engine has done specific races.

If Vettels case, Horner said the engine had done two previous events - and knowing that he had a new engine fitted at suzuka (as per the fia technical documents released as part of the post event details, http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Pages/post_event.aspx#) it's highly likely the engine that expired today was the engine he used at Monza and Singapore - but it may be an engine that has done any two previous events.

But what we do know is that his remaining race engine has only done fp3, quali and the race at suzuka - so itself should be fine for two more races - and there are a few engines that have done two events (and probably subsequent free practices) still available for practices and the last race if need be.

Is a good summary of when a driver took a new engine (but doesn't neccesarily indicate which engine was used at each event).

Well after my plans of a slightly tipsy race watch fell apart iv just gotten my self together and seen the whole thing, thank god for iplayer and being able to fast forward some of the stoppages!! :D

Very very entertaining race (not one of the greats as it was weather dependant) and I was very impressed by Alonso there, he has really pulled the cat out the bag to get this season going in the way he wants. RBR really need to stop throwing away races though, Mark didnt really need to test the limits of the track so early on and Vettel needs to sort out his engine usage a bit (as was pointed out at every restart he was hammering it away from Alonso which cant be the best policy if he knew this wasnt a fresh engine)

Had it been dry I really doubt it would have been such entertainment, it definitely would have been good, looking at how quali went, but a red bull 1-2 would have been more than likely... Still hope we have more races in Europe as I cant hack all the flyaway middle of the night ones

Only because the two remaining races have red bull written all over them. However, they can quite easily self destruct as shown today.

I can't believe red bull won't back Webber when push comes to shove.

The McLaren just doesn't seem to have quite the speed it needs and the Ferrari is only good enough to win when the track doesn't suit the RB or when they self destruct.

Just thought the same here.
Just wanna see the end of the race, don't give a crap about the forum until AFTER watching the race....

Yeah same here watched it on iPlayer they made a huge balls up of the parts between part 1 & 2 there is a lap or 2 missing, Miss the Petrov crash in that section.

Overall a decent race, quite a shame about Webber taking out Rosberg, Rosberg looked promising in the few laps he got. Button had an awful race, Vettel was unlucky the race was his until the engine let go.

Good results for Hamilton, Alonso & Massa though mainly the latter hopefully that'll give him some more confidence again in the coming races.

So disappointed in the way the race started, so many laps under a safety car killed off what could have been epic imo. However! it was a bloody good race, I found myself yelling at the TV when Webber seemed to have saved his little slip (why the hell didn't he use the brake to stop rolling?) but then sadly collect Nico to secure DNFs :(

I totally missed the whole Vettel saga because of how crap BBC are, who the hell watches the god damned Andrew Marr show ffs, anyway I had the TV live paused so my GP was running -20mins, so after being told to turn to BBC2 I had all but missed the fun so just sulked and watched the end.

I'm praying to the engine failure gods because I really want Webber or Hammy as WDC champion but still, fair play to Alonso, he probably deserves it the most since that Ferarri was nothing in the first half of the season so we know its just him being an awesome driver, roll on next GP, I'm off to watch what I missed hopefully the re-run on BBC earlier is the WHOLE race!

Excellent race, but I felt the quality of the coverage wasn't really up scratch this weekend. The sticking and fast forward of replays during qualifying was a bit annoying.

Does anyone know if Schuhmacher gave a post race interview? He definitely seemed to excel in the conditions!
