Korean Grand Prix 2011, Yeongam Circuit - Race 16/19

One of my 'weird' pleasures in life is getting up at ~5-6am to drink coffee and watch F1. There's just something strangely satisfying and peaceful about sitting in the dark, watching my favorite sport. :D

Wondered where that was going then :)

Is the budget cap thing something written and confirmed between the teams as part of the Concorde agreement or some other official document, or is it a gentlemans agreements that the teams will strive to meet through mutual agreement?

If the latter, pff, its worthless, spend away :)

FOTA, an organisation to which membership is not only fairly fluid, but also has absolutely no bearing on your ability to compete in F1.

Yeah, its a bit of a worthless agreement then.

McLaren: Suzuka upgrades and design overview

Having started with two bold concepts the “U” shapes sidepods and the mysterious “Octopus” exhaust, the design had to be compromised to ditch the complex exhaust and revert to a Red Bull style outer blown diffuser. Leaving McLaren with a large amount of space under the gearbox, that was supposed to package the exhaust. This left the car with a higher rear CofG without the benefits of the exhaust to offset it. So it’s been remarkable that McLaren have been able to morph the initial concept into a race winning, Red Bull baiting package.

Whilst I remember the failings of the octopus exhaust I didn't know it was packaged underneath the gearbox, considering the CofG impact that created it really does highlight how good McLaren are at developing a car in season.

McLaren have often shown that they can turn a car around mid season really well (2009, for example).

Just imagine what they could do if they didn't get things wrong in the first place!

I think the extremely low gearbox on the Williams has shown all the teams what is achievable in terms of rear end packaging. Have McLaren redesigned the gearbox, or just developed around it to offset its disadvantage?

No it's not really if nobody breaks what they all sit down and agree, FOTA is very powerful and breaking deals just dilutes FOTA and gives more power to the FIA, why would anyone want that?

Why are teams in FOTA, why do FOTA take to the road and ask fans what they want when it's all worthless? FOTA works for the good of the sport, to improve the sport for everyone.

The RRA is totaly worthless unless each team hands in a receipt for everything(which they don't)
But don't take my word about it here is what ross brawn said...

"Three sets of wings, engine cover and floors cost EUR 800,000 in production, plus wind tunnel costs. For us it would be impossible to spend so much money on one race"
That was aabout RB

I never said FOTA was worthless. They have done some good things. But what I am saying is that they are an organisations whos existence has no bearing on the continuation of F1, so an agreement between teams within FOTA only has an effect within FOTA itself. If any team break an agreement, the worst thing that will happen is they are dropped from FOTA.

At the end of the day, while FOTA give of the impression of working for the good of the sport etc, it effectivly boils down to a group of people making agreements with each other, while their day jobs are to beat each other. If the benifits of breaking a FOTA agreement outweight the disadvantage of being kicked out, then of course a team will take it.

Or, in the case of HRT, if FOTA offer you absolutely nothing, then you just don't sign up as a member at all.

Remember, FOTA is a recent invention (couple of years I think). F1 went for years without any kind of teams association. If RBR broke the budget agreement, when Horner will just get all the other team bosses moaning at him, which is how he has spent most of this year anyway :D

Hang on minute, isnt this tightly packaged rear end Williams the worst car they have produced in decades? Are you seriously suggesting that other teams might copy Williams?

If I wanted to copy ideas from another team, I would definitely not be copying one of the worst cars on the field (ie. the tightly packaged Williams).

Just because Williams haven't managed to eploit the low-line gearbox this year doesn't mean it's a bad idea. The rest of the car just hasn't been up to scratch.

There's been lots of slow cars in the past which had genial ideas on them, which have been copied by top teams. I can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure the likes of Tyrrell and Arrows had designs copied in the late 90s.

Yes, thats exactly what I said. Spot on. I said that The Williams car is fantastic and has shown other teams how brilliant they can do things, and everyone should copy the whole design of the whole car.

*sigh*

All I said was that the Williams gearbox has shown other teams how small and low they can make them. I think the advantages to a small and low gearbox are obvious to anyone who knows anything about F1, regardless of weather the rest of the car its bolted to is a pile of junk.

That's pretty naive.

I also enjoy getting up early, live timings on lappy, f1 on tv, slanket and bacon butty :)

Yep next season will be good :)

Its a shame the Williams is a dog of a car, their packaging was genius but we'll never know how much difference it made really. I'd guess most others will copy this next year anyway though.
