Kvyat

Didn't Torro Rosso say before the season started that both of their drivers are losing their seats at the end of the year? If so RB wanted to grab Verstappen before anybody else did and Kvyat's mishaps were just the excuse to do it.

Marko makes me laugh, he says it's not a demotion but a move to help Kvyat rebuild his career. That's a load of rubbish because as the year goes on that Torro Rosso is going to be getting ever closer to the back of the grid as Renault and Honda improve their engines.

Keep in mind Kyvat might never have made it to F1 without Red Bull's backing. Their young driver programme is easily the most extensive in F1 and I can't recall anything coming close to it across motorsport, especially in these times of needing to finance your own drives.

While they are harsh with their drivers they do back them for years beforehand in most cases (obviously Verstappen is an exception). I'm sure the drivers and their parents/managers know by now how Red Bull work and what they're letting themselves in for and chose to sign up anyway.

As I said earlier I'm surprised Kyvat was demoted to Toro Rosso and not just kicked out of F1, as given their previous form that's what we'd come to expect, so in one sense he's got off lightly and Red Bull clearly want to keep him in their stable for now. As you said, this is as much about securing Verstappen as it is Kyvat's performances.

its got nothing to do with kyvat, rebuilding his form is absolute nonsense, its all about securing vest and is why they haven't kicked kyvat.

I can't particularly stand Verstappen, so hope he gets beaten good (fair play if he goes on to Vettel levels mind).

Also, agree with this

I see the above from a very different perspective...

At China, the incident was between the two Ferrari drivers, after Vettel left a big door open for Kvyat to accept cleanly (he did not touch another car through that corner as far as I'm aware).

At Russia, yes I think Kvyat messed up at turn 2.

But the second collision between Vettel and Kvyat was mostly Vettel's doing from what I understand, around the long left-hander, when he randomly decided to lift off the throttle through a full throttle corner when he had a Redbull right on his tail!

Surprise move, but from what I have read previously Helmut Marko doesn't have the patience for those types of errors.
It was most likely him, rather than Horner, who instigated this move.

I think this is far more about Verstappen than it is about Kvyat. Jos Verstappen at Melbourne was open that this season was all about getting Max into a top team, and I reckon that RBR have jumped at the sign of a sniff of semi-formal interest from another team.

What other top team would offer him a seat though? Mercedes have drivers under contract and ferrari have historically never taken on young drivers (massa being the exception and even then they loaned him out to sauber for three years before bringing him back), not saying that ferrari were out of the question but I would expect romain grosjean is going to take kimis seat next year.

Red bull seems like the seat he was always destined to take, it's just been brought forward a year. I read an article that his deal is a long term one.

I'm looking forward to see how he measures up in a big team against a top driver like Ric.

Rosberg is out of contract next year, as is Kimi. Ferrari also used to win historically but not lately!

Like you, I'm looking forward to how he does. I think RBR could have a very strong second half of the season.

The only reason Kvyat's driving standards have come under any scrutiny is because of Vettel. If, in China, Kvyat did the same overtake on say Massa, he might have moaned in shock getting overtaken but that would be it. Then in Russia, if Kvyat had hit Massa or Grosjean, they might have shouted for a second but that would have been it.
Instead we had Vettel screaming like a little girl in China that he had been overtaken by an out of control RB (no Seb, you didn't) purely to excuse him hitting his team mate, and then in Russia, he was swearing like a petulant child, and then running off to his old mother Horner.

To be fair Kyvat effectively wiped out 4 cars (Vettel, Ricciardo, Perez and himself) in one swift move in Russia then made sure of one of them in turn 3, nearly taking out Verstappen too. That's not something you usually see a driver doing at the front end of the grid (it's happened a couple of times in Melbourne and I'm sure elsewhere too, but it's a rare thing these days, Grosjean excepted, and he got a race ban).

He did absolutely nothing wrong in China, he kept his line, unlike Kimi pinching vettel...

He kept his line? he stole the line from Vettel leaving nowhere else for Vettel to go.

It was dangerous, it's fine so long as your opponent has room and enough time to avoid contact.

Neither of which Vettel had, he got away with it in China and he didn't in Russia.

Looking forward to saying Max driving for Redbull in Spain. :D

I don't much like max myself but it's pretty clear that rbr want max in the car

Yes kyvat made one definite mistake with blame for another but it's hardly a bad as Grosjean was.. Who is much improved

Not really the best way to deal with the situation I thought

No, his driving standards have come under scrutiny because he caused a car to crash out, he ruined his team-mates chance of getting a decent points scoring position and also caused a puncture on a third car (through hitting his teammate).

I agree that what he did in China was perfectly acceptable, there was a gap and he went for it and pulled it off, good on him. Vettel was wrong to say the things he did. What isn't acceptable is what happened in Russia, that was straight up poor driving, nothing else.

Personally not a fan of Verstappen. Spoilt little kid comes to mind.

He has talent, no doubt, but it feels as though he's a bit of a robot to me. Bit of a weird one. However I wouldn't be surprised if he out drives Dan Ricciardo..

Definitely don't like how RBR have dealt with Kvyat. Another knee-jerk toys out of pram reaction from them. Disappointing IMO.

Yup, Grosjean didn't get a ban because he shunted one guy and accidentally caused damage to 3 other cars, he got a ban because he ran someone off the road at full speed causing a horrifically dangerous crash which could easily have killed at least one driver. The danger and recklessness of what he did got him a deserved though imho too short ban.

Schumacher after a restart where cars are significantly less bunched up managed to outbreak himself and smash into the back of another car, it happens to every level of driver.

It's also unfair to put Ricciardo's lack of points entirely on Kvyat. It was a bad race and it certainly hurt Ricciardo a lot but RBR's decision to put both onto mediums cost both more time than the contact itself did. It was by a huge distance the worst tire to be on, had RBR planned on a two stop early and stuck with fast tires they would both most likely have gotten points.
