Hey All :D

I have been recieving lag spikes in games for almost a year now and has been really ticking me off. Every few minuites i will get a "connecyion interrupted" for a few seconds and by that time i am usually killed. i was told that i could have been my motherboard because it was realy cheap. I get a new motherboard and still the same problem. I get a new USB network adapter and still the same problem. Both motherboards work fine on a wired connection. My brother has an xbox 360 wireless and he said he never recieves lag spikes!

what is it about my computer tht is giving me theses spikes in games, it happened in windows xp and windows vista!!
since it all started happening i have reinstlaled windows over 10 times i would say!

Please if any one can help me

thanks

and the router i have is Belkin F5D7230UK4 54Mbps Wireless Cable Router

What is your OS?

Lag spikes are common on wireless because MS Operating Systems have an option that makes the wireless network card poll for new networks in range on a regular basis. Many ppl have had similar problems as you. AFAIK the main solution has been to use the Wireless Card manufacturer's utility to connect to the internet as opposed to the in-built Windows one.

I have Vista and a Belkin F5D-7000 V6.0 and surprise surprise, Belkin has not released a Vista-compatible version of its utility for my particular card. Also, Vista has a native wireless setup which configures things automatically. Anyway, I discovered some settings on the Card through Device Manager which eliminated the lag (I think the main one was Network Type - it was set to b/g mix and I changed it to g only....however I cannot say for certain that this was the thing that fixed my issue).

Let us know what your OS is...

Yeah you often suffer lag spikes, and stutters during latency demanding tasks like gaming, its just the nature of the beast.

i can only choose from B or G/B mix :S

Do you have the latest drivers? There are a number of different drivers which have a 'G' option but damned if I can remember them. What I know for SURE is that I have not installed the Vista recommended driver (found in the Windows Update section in Vista) for my PCI Adapter. I went and experimented with an idiot-load of different versions and I think I may have changed more than one setting (two settings maybe) on the card through Device Manager, and at some point it just started to work. I can have a look later if you want. Basically I can attribute the success to one of two things:-

1. I changed the correct settings on the Wireless properties (For some reason, I am quite sure that changing the wireless type to G only was a key factor).
2. I had the right driver version (expirement with this if all else fails, I have also read on various forums of people installing the drivers in XP compatibility mode and what not, but not sure if this helps. Check Belkin's site and get the latest version and then check to see if there are older ones - not too old though).

It could be a combination of the above. Sorry could not be more specific. Let me know if you are still spiking and I will see what I can find on my settings.

pretty much it...wireless zero config in windows..certainly on XP

thanks Ya'll for the support, i am at the moment downloading about 6 different drivers for it, vista ones and xp wll have to test them all one by one :D

btw i would use the manufactueres utility but i am yet to find one that works for vista i can onyl download the drivers from their site

i can only seen to get two sets of drivers installed and those ones were the ones on the disk that they gave me and the vista ones i downloaded. Neither of them had the option of just G. What drivers are you using "Random Guy"?

Okay, I am home. Comeradealexi, I think I have finally remembered what setting it was that fixed the spiking for me. I want you to try this setting and let me know if it works. For now, just make sure you have some reasonably latest drivers installed and do this:-

1. Go to the Wireless Card properties in Device Manager and find the one called SSID

2. Is that value empty? I would expect it to be. Put the SSID name of your network here

3. Retest for spiking. Set your network type to B/G mix (I have it set to this currently)

I am 90% sure the SSID was the key factor. If this doesn't work let me know and we can talk driver versions and yucky specifics like that and other settings.

still no luck :( this is what i have everything set too:

Adhoc Wireless Mode: 802.11 B/G Mix
Auto Channel Select: Disable
Auto Reconnect Mode: Enable
B/G Protection: Auto
CAM when AC Power: Disable
Country Region 11A: Ch(36-165)
Country Region 11G:(Channel 1 -11)
Fragment Threshold: 2346
Frame Aggregation: Enable
IEEE802.11h: Disable
Local Admin MAC Network: (blank)
Network Type: 802.11 Ad Hoc
Power Saving Mode: CAM (Constantly Awake
Radion On/Off:Enable
RTS Threshold:2347
SSID:belkin54g
WMM Capable: Disable

I dont know what half these mean but thats what all my things are set to

any ideas on what to do?

BTW

Driver Provider: Belkin
Driver Date: 02/08/2005
Driver Vertsion 1.0.0.0
Driver Signer: not digitally signed

this is the only driver i can get working that lets me have all the options above, when i use the vista drivers i only get 4 options to change :S

My Network Type is set to Infrastructure. All my other settings are the same as yours. Are you sure your SSID is set correctly to whatever name your network is? (Sry if its a stupid question). Let me know if the Network Type makes a difference.

Driver Provider: Belkin Components
Driver Date: 26/08/2005
Driver Version: 1.0.2.0
Digital Signer: microsoft windows hardware compatability publisher

Okay will check - got another problem to deal with atm tho -- cant even connect to the internet - i enter my password and either get "cant connect (timed out)" or your password is incorrect (which it isnt) GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
im pretty sure the SSID is correct anyway i will change the ssid and then try if i can even connect now
i will try and find the same drivers as you also

im starting to think there is a problem with my router since it is rejecting my password when its correct :S and even why i try to log into ym router from "192.168.2.1" i enter my password and it says its incorrect - after about the 10th try i can get into the routers config utility
