I can understand all those reasons - they're actually quite logical.

It's the other bizarre behaviour that baffles me though. For instance, I was on the M25 at about 1am one morning and I was driving along quite happily at 70 (GPS indicated) in lane 1 because it was pretty much dead. I'm approaching a junction, where I see a car join the motorway ahead of me - quite a distance away - and they just moved immediately into lane 2 for no reason. I stayed in lane 1 and caught up with them after a while so they were moving slower than me anyway. Just bizarre behaviour. Even when I overtook them they still sat in lane 2 with absolutely no traffic anywhere.

Now admittedly, when it's dead like that it's really not causing anyone any problem so it's mostly irrelevant at that time. But I bet these people do exactly that even when there is traffic around too.

always seem to get a motorway full of these idiots in the early hours, not so much on 2 lane sections but 3 lane sections are awash with them sittng quite happily in lane 2 or occasionally lane 3
 
Lmao at that video, drivers commentary is awesome!

To me sitting in the far/overtaking lane just feels wrong, same with the middle lane.

Depends on the situation, I would say it's perfectly acceptable to stay in the middle lane if

1: You are going to be passing anything in the next 10-15 or so seconds (and thus changing lane and back is an exercise in futility).
2: The leftmost lane is designated as a crawler lane for towing/slow vehicles.
3: The leftmost lane is leaving the carriageway and marked as such.
4: The leftmost lane has a surface that is practically undrivable (applies to quite a few areas right now with all the upgardes being done to the motorway network).
 
Again, another morning of sitting in lane 1 at 50-55mph whilst a chain of morons sit in lane 3 at 45mph because the car at the front of the train won't move across an empty lane 2 into an empty lane 1. Makes my morning commute a lot easier anyway :p
 
Saw a guy who kept drifting over 2 lanes this morning :/

Either on the phone or trying to push in without indicating. Either way I didn't let him in before the turn off :D

You probably should have hung back from him. Idiots like that will end up hitting you because they have no idea of their surroundings, defensive driving is the name of the game :p
