ive larped for years. not your little things like the lightning bolt video, but 1000-a-side battles with professional pyrotechnics, a game world with a persistent economy and guilds etc.

whilst you do get a few socially awkward people (its a safe, non-judgemental environment where they can be comfortable and learn some social skills, so im all for it), most of the larpers i know are from all walks of life, from squaddies to nuclear physicists to massage therapists (they run in in-character 'brothel' where you get a decent professional massage for in-game cash). there are even in-character bars (or there were when i went) where you can sit around drinking some of the best homebrew ive ever had (and i do like my ale) and play the social side of things.

A few guys i know are looking into starting up a swords and firearms larp/airsoft crossover that sounds interesting.

sigh at the videos. americans always manage to make larping look bad with their crappy weapons and worse costumes

The Larp is strong in you.

licensed to larp

its only like me and Nath prancing around the woods at weekends with paintball guns

That's pretty much how I see it.

LARP'ing is a social activity, no worse imo than running around with paint guns and pretending to be Rambo;), and a lot more healthy than sitting in a small room playing games on a computer/console.

From what I understand of some of the US LARP'ing groups it can be a combination of role playing, camping/hiking and gaming.

Depending on how serious people are, it can also be quite involving in terms of skills (and potentially profitable if you're able to make some of the props and sell them).

There was a proper hardcore LARP society at Durham Uni when I was there... Man, what was it called... Treasure Trap, I think? They called Durham by it's medieval name of Dunelm and ran about in the woods and all sorts.

We used to have people coming to lectures in all their gear. There was a guy in our physics lectures who came to be known as Disturbing Dave who was into it. He hung around with a girl, name unknown and thus dubbed Disturbing Davina, who looked like Nanny off of Count Duckula. There were suspicions that they were romantically linked, but the thought was just too hideous to consider.

I have heard the UK scene is above and beyond anything that happens in the USA, to the point where Alton Towers hire out a LARPing group to run the haunted houses and Corn Field maze events in Halloween, both of which are miles more entertaining than any roller-coaster I have ever been on.
