no one. england has 4 max
Thats not the point. For example there are 20 teams in the last round of the qualifiers; 2 of which are meant to come from England. So they can't give Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal automatic qualification as there would then only be 19 teams left in the last qualification round.

I'd imagine some lucky team will get a bye.
Can't do that because then you would have an extra team in the CL. The only way both Man Utd and Arsenal can both automatically qualify would be to kick 1 team out of the qualifiers (which they surely can't do). So surely one of them has to play a qualifier.

Unless they make Liverpool play 2 qualifiers. hehe Not likely though unfortunately. ;)
That wouldn't help even if it will please you. That will still leave 1 team short for the 3rd of qualifiers.

Good point, I hadn't grasped that at all. Perhaps there's an extra match somewhere in the qualifiers between, say, two first-round teams to whittle one of them out?

That was suggested last year for Liverpool (suggested that Liverpool play TNS for there spot in the CL; ironically they met them in the first round) but Uefa blocked it. They can't disadvantage teams for Arsenal winning the CL, one of Arsenal or Man Utd will have to play a qualifier.

The English clubs are testing uefas rulebook to the max the last couple of years :p

I'd presume they have some procedures in place should this occur....then again you'd have thought they would have had a rule in place over the champions defending the next year!!

It will be interesting to see how uefa sort it out...who knows, i suppose we should wait till the CL final is over with. To be honest i think for situations like this, in any league, the CL place for coming 4th should go to the team below in the league. So spurs should get the place if Arsenal are champions, and just how liverpool got in last year with everton in there too. So if Barca were finishing 4th/5th in their league and won the CL the extra CL place shuld stay in spain.

Last year they made a rule regarding this instance. If a team finished outside the top 4 but won the CL then the 4th place side would lose there place. Basically saying you can only have a maximum of 4 teams per country. The only thing is, i cant remember if the winners get an automatic place or if they have go by the place they finish in the league (ie 3rd and 4th have to qualify).

Yeah I'd imagine UEFA worked a rule out for it when they gave the winners an automatic berth, but no-one seems to have said what it is, which is why we wonder. :p

Perhaps, but the cynical part of me can't help but think that UEFA wouldn't complain too much if the likes of Artmedia or FC Thun were discretely dropped out of the system for a nice crowd-drawing, profitable club like the English ones.

EDIT: How do the spots usually go for the league anyway? I generally don't pay them much attention overall. Is it 1st and 2nd straight to groups, 3rd place to 3rd round qualifying and 4th place to 2nd round?

DOUBLE EDIT: Ah, it's 3rd and 4th into the 3rd round, makes sense.

It would make sence (Artemedia or Thun wouldn't agree though) but like i said they wouldn't allow Liverpool to do a similar thing with TNS (who are smaller than the above mentioned) and they wouldn't be losing out on a English side, just one would have to play a qualifier.
For the EPL 1st and 2nd go straight in and 3rd and 4th play in the 3rd round qualifier. Last year Liverpool had to play in the 1st round to compensate for the EPL having 5 teams in (basically created another slot by putting more sides in the earlier rounds of qualification).
