Lateness at work

If you're persistently 20+ minutes late did you not consider getting up 20 minutes earlier?

I work in local government who are notably relaxed to this sort of thing and our HR dept would have fired you by now with a record like that.

That's a completely unacceptable amount of lateness, I'm surprised you haven't had a disciplinary way before now. Just out of interest, what is the nature of your job?

That's a horrendous amount of lateness and public transport cannot be blamed. Either find an alternative, get up earlier or get a job closer.

you have to set your alarm earlier mate, i would have been stacked for this by now even i work through my dinner at times but that can only get you so much

The public transport in London is some of the best public transport in the world! I can't think off the top of my head of somewhere that it is better.

Do you use it regularly? For instance the train I usually get on is fairly often 5-10 minutes late but it's not an issue because a) I leave early enough to allow for this possibility and b) I currently work flexitime so provided I do the hours it doesn't matter too much. I am in agreement that considering the complexity of the London transport system that it works as often as it does is noteworthy but it's a very long way from being perfect.

I had to double check it wasn't 1st April when I read this! This is a bit of a joke like! I think the best chance you've got is to turn up to work on early all the time from now, DO NOT be late for the meeting, explain you know it is unacceptable and that it will not happen again in the near future. apologise, don't make stupid excuses (none on here are valid for the amount of occasions this has happened). Your supervisor isn't a dick, imagine you ran a business.... what would you think of someone who owed 15 hours of work for the simple fact he couldn't set an alarm or wake up on time, get in early, get a coffee and start the day fresh!

You need to plan your journey to get to work with time to spare, rather than coming through the door on the dot, since that never works unless everything is magically running on the dot as well.

I did use it regularly when I was living in London. I bet you could get any number of buses, trains or the tube to do your journey. I grew up in a village in County Durham where there was one bus an hour. (Which still never came on time!) The public transport in London is some of the best I have ever seen.

OP has time management issues. As has already been said, if you know the public transport is regularly unreliable, you should plan accordingly. If there isn't an earlier bus/train then you should seek alternative employment if you cannot meet the requirements of your contract.

Not sure what the 15 hours in brackets is as 489 minutes is around 8 hours. Irrelevant though as 8 hours lateness over a 3 month period is just shocking. I would say consider yourself very lucky you still have a job.

I am amazed that you actually didn't preview your post and think to yourself, "Should I really post this 'cos that really is a **** load of lateness."

Are you not late on the late shift then?

If so deal with your sleep routine or get a new job, you'll end up being fired at this rate and that's not going to do your chances of finding a new job any good.

Chap on here posted years ago that he had the same issue, didn't want to lose his job so turned his day upside down - went to bed straight after work and got up early. Turning his early into a late shift effectively. A bit extreme but you need to understand it's your problem, not your supervisors and you will need to sort it out.

This is easy,

Take it on the chin like a man, Apologise, and say you will catch up on any lateness, you will also get up earlier to try and combat the lame excuse for public transport.

It could go two ways, he accepts your apology and see's that you are genuinly going to change your ways or sacks you.

Making excuses vary rarely imho gets you anywhere, being honest however, most of the time helps a lot in these matters.
