Laura Trevelyan wants the UK government to pay reparations. Yet her family benefited from slave trade.
I personally think she should give up her entire wealth because it derived from slave trade.
I doubted she will ever do that.

this ‘reparations‘ thing has been getting out of hand.
how far are we going to take it ?

it’s like demanding money from someone because of something their great great grand father did

The Roman Empire enslaved many people so does that mean that every country in Europe can demand money from the Italian government ?

Whether you agree with her or not (i haven't read the entire article) I do respect that she is doing something about it herself if she feels strongly enough about it. Preaching to everyone else to do something is a lead balloon in the making but I respect an individuals desire to fix something they themselves didn't necessarily take part in.

Stupid people always seek to get free handouts from the government. These are the same people who achieve zero in life, best to ignore them.

Individuals or private entities can spend their wealth however they so desire. Reparational justice through financial means should not be funded by the taxpayer. Otherwise, it’s an exercise in robbing Peter to pay Paul.
That is exactly what the elite do.

If you're happy to support the passing down of assets through generations, through inheritance, should you not logically also support the passing down of liabilities, such as reparations?
No, it’s stupid. There’s no way of truly knowing how much my slave trading great great great great grandfathers money I have benefited from or have. In the vast majority of cases, it will be zilch.

As long as any 'reperations' focus on sustaining a functioning economy instead of in all likelihood wasting it on the corrupt governments that tend to be in these places and/or criminal elements that naturally pop up as a result of garbage governance then I think it's fine as ultimately it means everyone benefits from the proverbial prosperity sea rising.

Everyone in the UK benefits from our history, this includes the slave trade. You personally continue to benefit just by living here. Without the past, the UK wouldn't be what it is.

Are those seriously contemplating we give money in apology to various islands and countries happy to have a referendum on it? Meanwhile what's stopping you sending a few pay checks to whoever you want to apologise to and give them a leg up independently of those of us like myself who thinks it's a preposterous idea.
