LCD, LED or Plasma?

Do plamas really use more power than LCDTV? I read a few stories stating that they used around the same (for the same screen size).

they do, yes. my 50pz 80 probably averages around 400w at a guess. my old 40w2000 was less than half that at about 190w. the neoPDP plasma's are better at around 60% that of my pz80, but the led-backlit screens are the best of the lot at something like 50% that of a convensional cathode-lit lcd.

Well you seem quite uptight and overly defensive about plasmas is all. It's quite easy for you to rubbish opinions because of a lack of scientific methods used behind arriving at those opinions, but the subjective opinion of someone when they walk into a TV store is how 99% of TVs are purchased. You don't like it, but you will never be able to change it.

It is very easy for some of us to rubbish an opinion, especially once introducing some questioning or reasoning into peoples observations once we have found out they have bought one on reviews or a quick glance in a showroom 'as is'.

We do this as we havehad experience of many sets, in many environments, and actually do know what we are on about. It may seem harsh to some, but it is more useful than 'I just bought X tv becuase it is cool, thus you should get one'. That doesn't help anyone.

One thing that annoys me at the moment, is all this LED TV stuff. They dont make LED TV, will they do but thats on a far bigger scale. They are still LCDs but LED backlit.

Welcome to the world of marketing. :o

I could jsut go for a Sony W5500 which is 300 quid cheaper than the LED and wait for true LED to come onto the market.

If you want a LED TV, i would recommend getting on thats backlit rather then edge lit thats found in the cheaper LED models.

W5500 is a fantastic set, i have a few friends with that model and they are over the moon with it.

Id quite happly choose a W5500 over the Samsung / Panny G10

Or just grab a panasonic then wait for OLED if it appears in a few years :p

I can honestly say that after seeing the prototype 11inch OLED screen at the SONY offices last month, that this is going to be a revolution in tvs. The blacks were indestinguishable from the darkness in the room, even showing up the 9G Kuro, colours looks fantastic and vibrant (all in japanese so couldn't calibrate), and the overall picture was literally like looking through a window. No other set I have ever seen comes anywhere close !!!!!!

It's just sad we are going to be waiting a while, although LG did demo a 15inch screen at Cedia, with Sony bringing out their 11inch version in Japan later this year (I think).

Thought the little 11inch thingy had been available for a while, at a silly price?

Saw one in a Sony shop in the US about 18 months ago and it was very good.

I though its been out for awhile now. Isnt it some thing like £3500??

Ive just seen one in the Sony Centre, when collecting my TV, the picture is just stunning. However, the tech is a little expensive at the moment.

Of course hear what the AV aficionados and techs ramble on about, read the reviews, view and calibrate the screens every day for a month before buying by all means, but when it comes down to it, it's your money. Some guys simply can't stand you buying anything other than what suits them. It's like a blemish to what they love (bless them), so they jump in all guns blazing, shoving it in your face like you haven't got an ounce of intelligence.

I unwrapped my 46" Sammy LED "backlit" this morning and am loving it. I've now used it for games on the PS3, blu-ray movies and local HD tele feeds. Yes, I use it gleefully for HD (i live in Hong Kong), so SD purists can take a backseat. Crisp blacks, no auto-dimming problems visible with letterheads and other nitpicking things review sites state, day or night viewing is top notch with no reflection or glare, effortless calibration, plug and play USB for x.264 rips, super slim frame and on a whole pleased as punch.

Sure, plasma have the best picture quality available in SD, but on a HD feed these things look crisper and clearer than plasma. As a minor note, OLED is surely the way forward, but LED "backlit" is a nice stopgap until that day comes.

Obviously you are in a situation which is slightly different from most UK users. You seem to be using HD material exclusively, in which case the full weight of your decision can be based on HD image quality.

The problem in the UK is that most of us still view SD material more than HD material. And like you state, SD material is where plasma excels over LCD panels. If you dont watch SD material, then LCD may actually be the best solution for your needs.
