LCD Lightgun? Yes please.

I'm tempted to order myself one of these Sinden guns. Is the recoil version worth the extra?

I keep reading that the software is really bad and hard to get games working properly.

Also it'll be used on a normal monitor under MAME, so probably not as snappy as it would be on Mister, but does it still work well on MAME?

Recoil is fun but not essential.

Batocera has native sinden support.

I'd just pick up someone else's build and customise it if needed.

@hyperseven, I've never heard of Batocera, but sounds like that would be acquiring another PC. I already have MAME setup on my gaming PC, so I'm just looking for a good solution for using a gun with my current setup.

Is that supposed to be better than me running MAME on my PC? or is it just the recommended way because of the Sinden support?

Sorry to ask but the OP post is from 2019. Where are we with "modern" light guns? I'd love to relive the days of Time Crisis II with recoil.

Are the modern alternatives lag free or "lag-free"? I'm pretty sensitive to that sort of thing.

There was a new plug and play light gun announced recently, can't comment about the lag.

Can’t comment on if it’s “better” or not but Batocera has the support built in so it’s a plug and play solution. Ive been looking in to a Sinden for my own Batocera set up and along the way I’ve read a lot about how awkward and fiddly it can be to set up MAME and other emulators with a the necessary config files to get a lightgun working.

This website - https://lightgun.retrolunatics.com/ - may help you. I’ve just found it but it seems to have a lot of Windows based front ends and set ups specifically for lightguns

Has anyone tried Batocera paired with a Wii Remote? I might give it a shot (pun intended) this weekend.

I tried this on the weekend. Original Wiimote paired with the bluetooth controller on a Dell Optiplex Micro. Used the original wii sensor bar hooked up to a wii sitting out of the way. It worked surprisingly well - I tried PS2, Dreamcast and PS3 games (all either HOTD or Virtua Cop).

Anyone seen the retroshooter rs3 reaper? Similar to the gun4ir it uses 4 IR led sensors, which seem to be far more reliable and accurate than the sinden camera tech. Around £240 shipped from the US but also comes with pedals included.

Decided to have another go with the Sinden which has been gathering dust pretty much since I got it apart from a few attempts to get it working 2-3 times. Pretty sure my issues have all been because of light in the room as I tried it with Batocera late evening (v41 but had tried it before with v38) and it worked pretty much perfectly.

Will try it again today during daylight to confirm it.

My Sinden arrived about a week ago so I’ve been playing about with it. My impression is that it’s not so much the brightness of ambient light but reflections on the screen that make hit detection a bit off.

The distance you stand from the screen makes a difference too. On a 32” screen I stood about three feet away and all was well. Any closer and it didn’t work. On a 75” TV, I had to stand at least five feet away preferably six or seven. I assume the camera in the gun needs to see the entirety of the white border for hit calculations to be performed
