Right im in the market for a new tv (my classic stevie the tv crt blew up last month and ill have a few 100 quid for a replacement) so i was just wondering which is better in the terms of picture quality.

Mainly going to use the tv for well watching tv (free view it looks like) and playing games on my ps3 and older consoles, if these dictate anything.

My mum has a samsung lcd tv from about 4-5 years ago which is one of the best tv's iv ever watched so if nothing else ill end up with a samsung set...

Well...

Id say neither and get a plasma. I bought a Samsung 50" 1080p plasma for £600 at currys when they had a deal on and it is an amazing tv. My brother has an lcd and he admits mine knocks spots off it in colour rendition, motion and quality. LED's are nice but very pricey and still nowhere near as good as a plasma for colour. Also viewing angle is heaps better on a plasma (my table is right at the side of my plasma and i can still watch a program on it in full colour , try that on either an lcd or led and it wont happen)

Also screen burn is so overhyped. Mine sometimes has a little image retention if i have something static for 2hrs+ but dissapears after 5 mins of watching another channel.

All in all , id go plasma , cheaper , waay better colours , waaay better motion and bigger for less cash!

Haha that is terrible if you are a big gamer you will have sections of the screen with static images for much longer than 2 hrs!!! Would not recommend this option at all.

i've gamed on plasma's for the last four years, for many many hours at a time (far too long at times, 8 hours plus) and never suffered from any permanent screen burn.

Those who come and mention screen burn are reffering to the old tech when plasma's first hit the consumer market, and in turth have probably never owned a plasma.

Yep, done lots of long streaks and no real issues here either (and I play RPGs, so yes I've had retention where constant UIs like HP etc have been onscreen, gone after several hours of something else or a few days later of random usage). Occasionally a slight bit of retention after a long play with constant UI, but nothing thats ever a problem unless you specifically go up to the tv and look for it. Admittedly Im using a Panny though which are notably better for this than Samsung/LG last time I looked.

That said the LG plasma the family own has been gamed on a lot with no permanent issues too.

Haha, cheers for some ideas there. I think ill only be able to justify a cool £500 on a tv (and I cant remember the exact dimensions of my new living room so iv got to remember to keep the size reasonably practical and transportable back to england at some point in the next year or so) but ill keep an eye on the option of a plasma, and it seems a bit like led isnt ready for me (been 4-5 years before iv let my self get high def so you know...)

If anyone has any cool suggestions please pass them on as I wont be rolling into town to get something till thursday afternoon and ill be annoying tv sales people by sitting and watching sets for a bit to see what I like :)

Trust me when i say that Plasmas are better than lcd or led. I spent a good 3 months going through them all and going to shops to look and yes the lcd and led are slightly sharper but thats to its disadvantage not advantage. It just doesnt look realistic!!

Im yet to hear someone say a bad thing about my wall mounted 50" 1080p plasma. Virtually everybody that sees it when im playing bluray on it says "WOW". Even on sky hd which is 720p at best it is far better than an lcd or led as the colour and the way it handles motion is far superior than lcd.

Before my plasma i was offered an unbeatable deal on an LG 47" 1080p lcd (offered it at £529 when it was going for nearly £800 everywhere else) and wall mounted that for about 2 months. The motion drove me insane and anywhere bar straight on the colours were terrible. I sold it at what i bought it for and bought the samsung plasma. Its like a different experience!

The only bad things you hear about plasmas is screen burn this and screen burn that. Most of the comments come from people who probably bought some yakataki plasma when they first come out , left a static image on overnight and wondered why they had mickey mouse embedded on their screen.

All i did was take it easy with the contrast ratio for about 4wks and then adjusted it afterwards. No sreenburn , no nasty viewing angles , MASSIVE colour gamut and pin sharp hd visuals.

I own 2 Panasonic plasma's and I would never buy another one,the black levels have raised on my G10 (Panasonic are not interested in the slightest even though it is clearly not as good now, as my 2008 PZ85)and the screens are so easy to scratch even with a microfibre cloth. Totally over rated after living with them for a few years.

I just got an LCD TV... its great but the 100hz technology in these current ones is a pile of ****.. I kinda of regret not getting a Plasma for the smooth motion .. Panny 600hz would have taken care of that.. oh well lesson learnt.

so i was just wondering which is better in the terms of picture quality.

As ever, there is no difference bar the backlighting. They are both LCD tvs, no such thing as proper size consumer LED tvs out there yet.

And get yourself a a nice plasma and forget all this spec sheet nonsense that LCD manufacturers harp on about. 200hz and frame creation this and that is a load of crap and should always be off, just destroys the picture!

Image retention just isnt a problem, its caused by the phosphor getting a little over charged, and it leaves a brigher ghost image.

Image burn is where the phosphors have been destroyed slightly, and then the ghost image is darker, and permanant.

Image retention is common on plasma, but also possible in LCD as well, its not a problem. Image burn is rarer these days with modern plasma's with good quality phosphors, but if you get it, its permanant and nasty.

That said I game on my plasma its no problem, and there are no dogs/logo's burned in either.

Isnt the G10 the first generation Panasonic that attempted to add some version of Kuro black technology... I believe that the 2010 models are much better at keeping their deep blacks, and the earlier 2008 models dont get the problem so much because their black wasnt "that" great to start with.

That said most "bad" plasma's stilll have more depth of black than an LCD. Dunno how you scratched your screen either, there is a pretty sturdy plastic screen guard infront of the panel. Mine still looks like new.
