LCD vs LED

The TVs advertised as LED are only "edge lit" LED unless otherwise stated (some have a full LED backlight - but very few) so you get a nice thin TV but they suffer from clouding as the centre of the screen can't be lit as evenly as the edges.

In terms of power usage LED/LCD do use a fair bit less than plasma but since plasma is a self illuminating tech it doesn't always use up as much leccy - the peak will be for bright white images.

Best thing to do is get yourself down to a store and compare some sets - see if you are susceptible to the flicker some people suffer from on plasmas and or if you can live with the dark grey (not quite black) that LED TVs give you rather than the inky blacks of plasma.

If you aren't bothered about wall mounting the TV then LED isn't going to be worth the extra dosh as you mention - a normal LCD set would do you fine, although as I say go view some sets :)

Where you gonna watch this TV? If it's in a brightly lit room or might have to contend with the sun... go plasma all the way... if it's in a bedroom and you might lay in bed watching it at night... I'd go LCD... they're much easier on the eyes.

As per majority of responses on this forum. It's always to get a Plasma since they are superior. See it a lot on here and just don't understand the hype.

I've always gone LCD as Plasma don't seem to work so well when a PC is the source. So if you have/ are going to use HTPC, then look into that.

Picture quality wise, Plasma tends to be the best, much deeper blacks etc. But I've never been unhappy with the picture quality of my Samsung 40" worth going to AVforums and using their recommended settings for your TV, made mine infinitely better than its default settings.

I tend to watch my tv series/films in a small bedroom at night with the lights all off, would you still say lcd is the better option for me ?

I was going to buy a 50' Plasma when my eye caught the 55' LED. Turned around, walked out and stuck the money back into my account. Now saving for the LED. Was about to buy it a few months back when an unexpected expense turned up and depleted that particular fund. I've seen two 55' LED's in mates' houses and it just blows you away. Everyone but everyone always comments on the picture quality and clarity of the screen. Fair enough, it's not true LED's and it's horribly expensive, but it has that WOW factor I'm after.

6 weeks ago i bought a Panasonic G20 50" and i am just loving it, I had a 42" LCD before which i have now retired to the bedroom, The LCD looks very washed out compared to the Plasma................. I am a Plasma convert now.

I see the G20 for £1200. Seeing the LG 55' LED is kicking about for £1400, it's a hard hard sell.

£1400 where? Just looked and cant see any 55" led tv's for anywhere close to that. Even if it was that amount is that not more than double the price of a decent 50" 1080p plasma?

Just paying for the new technology!

For what it's worth I completely disagree with the above advice! It's only when the lights are off that you get to fully appreciate the improved blacks plasma give over lcd. They also suffer worse in sunlight than lcd.

In a darkened room it's plasma all the way. You'll find this is the view generally shared ;)

Actually it's £1391. Configure your trust details and I can show you where as it may past as a competitor. It's one of the major high street electronic retailers that's running an online special for the next week. I've seen it for as low as £1350 a while back. It's the LG 55' LED. It's being discontinued therefore the cheap price. It's a cracking TV, have two mates who got it and it's so beautiful I could cry.

Wow, didnt realise tv's we're so divisive... (then again most things are really...)

Ended up in currys getting my self a samsung LE32C580J1K (think thats the right combination after the LE32) and i havnt stopped smiling :) Its only a 32 inch lcd that does 1080p and by having a read through everything here it seems iv gone just the right way for gaming (what we've been doing all week without the internet).

Got to say cheers for all the ideas and suggestions as it was a difficult choice to keep my self under the £370 mark and I think iv made the right choice after a really good experience with my mothers older version of the same tv (5 years older so i only does 1080i) and an equally good experience with my 4 year old samsung monitor. The tv its self fits nicely within my living room without dwarfing it and plays all my consoles very very well (even the mega drive!)
