Been watching on and off, so might have missed it, but seems to be few safety periods and doesn't appear to be many retirements.

There have been a few but it's less than last year. What is amazing though the top 3 are separated by less than 12 seconds after 14 hours of racing.

Yep very close.
What happened to audi, they were so far ahead a few years ago, and iirc quite close last year with Toyota but dispite having to pit more had the faster car and won and no where this year.
