The old comment is simply factual, it is old. The A5 first appeared in 2007, so it's a car that's reaching the end of its lifespan. It's been glitzed up with blingy bumpers and flashing lights etc but ordering a new car at the end of its lifespan means you end up with a 2007 era car really, rather than something far more fresh and modern inside and out. Currently with Audi you have the situation where, say, an A3 is more advanced, has better and more modern tech and is fresher than an A4/5 because it's just been replaced.
It'll happen to BMW, too. In 3 years time there will be a new E Class and an all new XF around so you'd need to think hard then before ordering a new 5 Series. It just so happens that this is currently where Audi is with the A4 and A5. BMW have it currently with the 1 Series Coupe, anyone ordering these new is bonkers.
The A5 was released about 6 months after the old shape 3 Series Coupe (Ok, the Sportback wasn't, but you get the point, it's a different variant of the same car). That was its rival and that's where it was pitched. Which is great if you want to spend £14k on a nice Coupe but rather less impressive if you are placing a factory order or jumping into a 4 month old car.
