Leave a job your happy in?

OP you're mad. I'm currently doing a 1hr30 commute each way 3x a week for a contracting role, and it's killing me. I don't have any time to myself in the evening.

Not sure I could do longer and do it an extra day.

Definitely worth exploring the new one. If you've applied, you must consciously want some level of change, though it sounds like you're just nervous of the unknown.

I have applied for another role that's a big pay increase that would be more than even my next promotion could be by quite a big way.
It's also a lot closer to home aswell. And I pick the hours I work with my own schedule as long as the works done.

If I'm lucky to be offered the new job I'm not 100% sure that I'll take it. I'm sorting of holding back as I've never had a job I enjoyed before.

What do you think.i should do?

Go to the interview, learn more about the company and see if they even make you an offer. If you applied and it sounds like a good role then you should go and talk with them, don't talk yourself out of it before you've even met them let alone even have an offer to begin with.

You're hardly the only person in the whole of the UK with a job you enjoy, there are other roles out there and it sounds like you could earn a lot more money as well as free up a lot more time ergo you should be casually looking for new roles *even if you don't think you're likely to leave your current job now*.

Firstly you can always turn down an offer, but just keep an eye on the market periodically as you never know, you might find a really good role you like. Even if you don't get this one just chat to recruiters on Linked In and give them your CV, you don't need to actively apply for stuff (just talk to recruiters who already have a role and already think you'd be a good fit) but just try to get in an interview every so often so you can see what else is out there. Do that and keep your interviewing skills fresh, get a better idea of your worth on the job market and over time you're probably going to outperform the version of you in the universe where you get too comfortable in the job you currently like.

I've been in the property maintenance game all my life. I'm on a decent salary now and am very happy where I work, and I've worked for some absolute nightmares of clients in the past who have scarred me for life. Which is why this next opportunity has me on the fence.

It's a pretty hefty bump in salary but I'm really happy where I am and not sure if the money is worth it.

Add to that it's our tender year and I'd be really screwing over my company if I left now as they are relying heavily on me to win this tender.

The prospective new employer has asked for an interview, gonna go for it and take it from there. I'm in no rush to find anything, and I don't need a new job, but a 23% increase is not to be sneezed at.

Remember, you haven't got the job yet :)

Update: so I didn't get the job I went for but I have moved to another project that is closer to home. It's a 90 minute drive to work and about the same home which is much better.

I do have another interview this Friday but I'm a bit nervous on if they offer it to me, should I take it.
So it's the same job I'm doing now but it's a 40 minute drive to work and it's a 15k minimum pay increase depending on how I negotiate in Fridays interview.
Money will be life changing for me, but I'm happy in my current job.
I'm in the construction industry so I could be at a project that's far away till it ends then be one closer to home.

At some point you need to take the leap unless you just want to stay where you are forever. Over 50% less commuting and a min £15k pay bump, personally I'd say you're mad not to go for it if they offer you it.

Not a great person with change, I'm happy where I'm too but the commute is a lot, but it's something that has been kinda normal for me.

I'm the same but I've never regretted any of my job moves even though my commutes have always gotten longer :o the opportunities and pay has always been worth the move.

For me it comes down to how much you value your life. You only get one, and every hour spent sat in a car driving to and from work is an hour you could spend doing something that brings you joy, and you will never get it back once it’s gone.

Yup, Operations Director on the south coast for a successful food wholesaler. I'd been there 30 Years. Only left as me and the family emigrated to Australia.

Not a days goes by that I don't have regret at leaving and uprooting.

Update: so the interview went fantastic, said all the right things to me. The interviewer said he is recommending me for the role to the project manager. Now I'm off today to go meet him at the project to see what I think.
It kinda sounds like I'm in a good position to get offered the job by the sounds of it. But here I am full of butterflies thinking should I be changing jobs.

In the interview we discussed salary and I was conservative and said 50-52 (15k-17k pay rise to what I'm on now), the interviewer said we will offer substantially more than that. Also asked what car package I would like to get me interested. Despite all this I'm sat here not feeling right.

What a real treat.

It's nice to see someone who is clearly at least partially sensitive to risk as well as being self aware taking a leap and it paying off. All too often it's the cheeky reckless types who you see seemingly getting away with murder.

You were doing a 5 hour daily commute on £35K??? Maybe you just like driving, you can get paid to drive a truck if this doesn't work out
