Leaving plugs on, is it bad?

I worry about people who turn the ******* fridge off to save electricity :o

I mean I'm all for saving money and being tight but there are limits

I think i know why mine stays on.

I have to keep on putting quids in to get electricity, when the flat was for Holidays instead of a short hold tenency the owner would put a padlock on the fuse box to stop you from using the same quid over and over.

Im guessing once the quids run out on the timer the fridge stays on as it needs too.

Define huge? How many kilowatts do they use to charge up?

Not Kilowatts, but I think the ratio for amount of charge stored in the battery to the amount needed to charge it is about 1:1000. Its a very ineffecient process.

Are you saying to charge a laptop takes 1000x more power than it would use during normal operation? :p

phone chargers yes, because they keep converting electricity even if your are not charging your phone.

I usually only turn off stuff at the plug if I'm going out, going to bed or going away for a long time like when I go to prison and stuff. ;)

Some people turn their fridges off overnight?

I only turn stuff off at the socket if I'm going on holiday.

Jail bird! :p

I'm saying it'll use x1000 more energy to charge it then it will store (very rough number obviously, but you get the idea)

I find that very hard to believe.

If that was the case, it would take one thousand hours for it to charge up enough to use the laptop for an hour off the battery. If my experience, it is closer to 1:1 :)

My source is my Chemistry Housemate, I'll see if I can get you some other source.

That sounds a bit stupid. Source?

It's common sense, a source isnt really needed there.

Noticed how light bulbs always 'go/blow' immediately when the light is switched on? and not when there on continous, its because theres a power spike, which does do a tiny bit of damage each time :)

Your chemistry housemate says you need to leave a laptop on charge for ONE THOUSAND HOURS in order to get an hour's use out of it? Hmm..........

If it's a the same voltage/amperage, remember the charge amperage is a lot higher on charging than what the battery provides.

Never leave a socket switched on with nothing plugged in. That electricity stuff leaks everywhere and makes a right mess of the carpet :D

Hmm, that would explain that dried white stuff on the carpet near my computer then! :D

im not sure but i agree with him, you can hear the caps in my charger squeeling away when my laptop is being charged.

id also agree with taking the battery out if its being left on mains power for long periods of time as i found out from experience that not doing so dramatically reduces the battery life, mine lasts about 40 mins tops when on battery alone 4400mah L-Ion
