Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

Really?!
I thought if you bought cl20 that would be the new default did you buy the impact stuff? Maybe need to clear the bios settings somehow.

16GB G.Skill 3200MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM Laptop Memory Upgrade Kit (CL16) 1.20V PC4-25600 Ripjaws 2x8GB

F4-3200C16D-16GRS

Is the kit I ordered.

I’m guessing cl16-18-18 is to tight for it and it just doesn’t know what to do with it?

as I’ve seen screen shots of the hyperX cl20 kit set fine.

that gskill kit does awesome thou!

So for info, after much faffing around Ive been trying to eek out battery life for those interested.

Ive managed to get discharge down to -6.3mW when idle which is telling me it gives approx. 9.5hrs run time. Of course when I do anything that quickly goes up but take it for what its worth. Downside is this is hybrid mode, with nothing using the RTX obviously, processor state % down to like 60% in power settings and Ive limited the display to 60hz via an additional program ( havent tested if thats actually reduced power draw but imagine it has!?)

I'm interested in the standard Legion 5 with the 5800h and RTX3070 although I'm unsure if the upgrade is worth it from my current laptop which to be honest is still running fine, but portability and a 10-15mintue battery life is becoming problematic for site based work.

current laptop:
Acer helios 500 with ryzen 2700 & vega56 desktop parts...
17.3 FHD 1080P 144hz screen although this doesn't matter too much as I'm normally plugged into a 34" widescreen.

some of the hard drives and ram can be swapped across to the new machine so not to worried about that.

what do people think would this be a worthy up grade?

It would be a huge upgrade.

That is appalling. I ordered from currys yesterday. Just arrived now.

I did pay 1500 for 3070, 16gb, 1tb so I probably missed out on 200 quid or so of student discount had they been in stock on lenovo. But given the 3-4 month wait times provided by lenovo id say its better to be in control, and know u can buy something off the shelf, rather than be in a queue for something that doesn't exist yet for months .

What makes it worse is they've actually taken payment on an item that's expected to arrive September lol.

Yes definitely worth it

You can switch between 60Hz and 165Hz refresh by pressing Fn + R

i see that these legion 5's come with 16gb of 3200mhz, thing is that i regularly use in excess of 24gb of ram hence i currently have 48gb in my laptop.

now my question is if i was to swap out the 16gb 3200mhz for my spare 32gb 2666mhz cl16 that i have available for free, how much of a negative effect would this have to performance?
Saying that.. i suppose having enough slower ram is better than maxing out 16gb of faster stuff...

Zen 3 does get substantial benefits from higher frequency RAM but it is quite application dependant.

Anything wrong with the regular 5 with the 15.6 FHD 5800H and 3070? Its at the right price point i'm looking at, I can assume a mobile 3070 is going to run everything near enough ultra details near the max refrash rate?

I've been thinking the same, also been thinking that if I wanted a better screen then a QHD monitor might be an option in the future

Just had one turn up this morning any questions???

still torn on whether to send it back.... just forgot how small 15.6" laptops are find i bump hands a lot:rolleyes:.

i have noticed that there is a fair bit of deck flex on this standard plastic one. Although i do like the rear IO a lot.

to answer my own question:

Acer helios 500 with ryzen 2700 & Vega 56 = passmark 4658 cpu 15260 3d 12370
Legion 5 5800h & rtx 3070 = passmark 7580 cpu 22642 3d 17340

as a more tangible comparison my fps in Star Citizen playing on very high on a 34" 1440p monitor has gone from 35fps with an average of 41fps to 73+ i am quite surprised by this i did not think it would be that much of an upgrade!

How's the fan noise when gaming? I'm really torn about whether to get the standard legion 5 or wait for the pro , sounds like overall you'd recommend the standard one yes?

when full gaming its fairly loud but if you wear head phones its not a problem.

what i am surprised by though is the fact that no heat seems to come up through the keyboard even after a good 4+ hours of star citizen.

i would recommend it... even though i wanted the pro for the screen but i think the same spec is 1.7k rather than 1.2 which is a lot extra. If the whole unit was machined metal i would have gone for it but not with the keyboard deck being plastic. Best thing about this laptop i think is that 90% of the ports are on the back and my desk is clear of cables now! finally...

Upgraded the RAM, getting some decent gains:

Division 2 @ Ultra. 115 FPS Vs 106 FPS
Forza 4 - @ Ultra 158 FPS Vs 121 FPS
CBR23 - MC=13190, SC=1434 Vs MC=12742, SC=1398
FireStrike Graphics = 11000, CPU = 10308 Vs 10615 Graphics, CPU = 8724

Thanks for posting this. I'm tempted to upgrade my Crucial 2x8Gb single ranks to the HyperX dual rank but wasn't sure if it would be a noticeable increase on a 4800H laptop.

Date changed on mine now. Expected to ship mid June instead of September, so a little positive. Did ask about it on live chat to a rep and they seemed to think the Legion 7 will come into stock before the 5 pro does again within the next few weeks (that's the 3070 and upgraded CPU, can order the base model again now).
