Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

Yep, incredibly good value for money. Lenovo's pricing for extending the warranty is really reasonable too.
I'm currently on a Lenovo 5 with a 11800H and 3070, finding it difficult not to go for the 4080 version.
If I was in the market for one, I would have likely purchased it already. Seems a fantastic price. Iirc, The 3070ti were going for that not long ago.

I was lucky enough to get a 6800H/32GB/3070TI about a year ago for ~£1100 each.

If I hadn't, I'd definately be jumping at the bit after the 4080 version. Based on specs should be similar to a desktop 4070-4070ti, ie as fast as the 3080 was if not a bit faster which is what is still in my desktop. Not bad at all!

Im trying to connect my 5i pro to an external monitor which is a MSI MAG274QRF using the USB-C to DP but im having problems the screen dosnt stretch across as the laptop 16:10 and my monitor 16:9 any ideas how to get it correct?

As an aside, be careful with AMD based Legion 5s. @michty_me

I unfortunately ended up having to return my two, as after some fighting, and a LOT of troubleshooting, it turned out the issues I was having were caused by fTPM stutter; an issue which Lenovo never issued a BIOS update to address (despite AMD making updated AGESA code available to fix the issue). Therefore theoretically all Ryzen based Lenovo laptops prior to the 7th gen (7th gen MIGHT well be fixed, as the AGESA fix was released prior to 7th gen I believe) which haven't been given the AGESA updates can potentially suffer, it just seems to differ from machine to machine how bad it is, and how noticeable you find it.

To resolve it on mine, I had to disable Hybrid graphics, disable G-Sync, run in DGPU only AND AMD's PSP ergo TPM to get back to a normal experience, which was extremely dissapointing, otherwise you got a sort of rubber banding stutter (and some DPC latency spikes), especially in highly demanding games, at medium framerates. An Intel based machine shouldn't do it, and the whole thing was a real shame as I really liked my 6800H based machine, but the compromises were too severe for me to put up with, to restore mostly normal performance. Real shame.

And BIGGER shame on Lenovo for not fixing something that has generated an 82+ page thread on thier forum from disgruntled AMD-based Lenovo users.

If I see an incredible deal on another Lenovo I might consider it, but given how they've treated many users suffering this issue, it certainly drops them a notch in my book. **** poor customer service.

I actually read your comment on this on HUKD and off the back of that comment, Decided against making that purchase so thanks for the input, I think I would likely opt for the Intel variant this time if one becomes available but even second hand seem to be stupidly priced. I'll see what Black friday brings though if anything.
Any other machines you would recommend keeping a look out for? (Not Asus, Been stung by them a few times)
I currently own an XMG custom built which has been great. Temps sit around 68 deg during gaming on it but since Brexit, Not really worth purchasing from them again.

Glad I was able to help some people avoid potentially getting stung. Hated to have to write it, but I spent a lot of time troubleshooting the machine, and the thread on the Lenovo forums is fairly damning regards Lenovo's efforts to fix the issue.

7th series AMD laptops SHOULD be good, as the AGESA fixes came prior to 7th gen I believe.

XMG Customs are good, I'm not sure if they're still there, but some of then ex Kobalt Computers guys went there after Kobalt went under, if I remember correct, and they tend to use fairly decent chassis, and tend to do the work on getting them right. Brexit has definately hit that market though.

I had some pretty good experiences with HP Omen 17s also, but its been a few years since I had one. Had several models though, and they always featured a full fat wattage GPU, sometimes the CPU cooling wasn't amazing, but I'd still look at thier models, the 17s at least. They didn't have a mux, didn't even enable the IGPU, they were full blown gaming laptops at the heart. They always tended to beat MSI and the likes on price, and warranty extension was worthwhile. When I had any issues, although support could be a bit slow to accept anything in, once they did, they did a great job.

Other than that, the UK Custom laptop is pretty lackluster these days, the only one I can really think of is the 'specialist' place, but otherwise you're importing from Eluktronics or XMG really I think, from out of Germany.

MSIs can be reasonably decent (albeit always buy on now not anything they promise 'is' coming), and Medions can actually be fairly decent also if you find a good spec, albeit don't expect much aftermarket/extended warranty with those guys.

I think my main concern is buying something and finding out the thermals are total junk. I've been spoilt with the CMG as it ran pretty cool for a 120w card in it.
I think the CPU is probably holding it back further to be fair with a 4800H.
Maybe we will get some decent black Friday deals so I'll keep my eyes peeled on HUKD for something that will pip my interest unless I see someone selling up on here.

Well I will say on the Omen 17s, the GPU cooling was always great, it was the CPU side that was a little more limited, and they do tend to be good value for a full fat, full wattage GPU in this country.
You might well see the 4080 (150W) equipped Omen 17 hit the 2K mark approx.

Ok thanks, I'll check them out also. I suppose if I do get one and not happy with the thermals, It just goes back.
I think a 4080 would be wasted for me as it will just be a secondary gaming machine when away from home hence wanting to potentially go down the used route.

Hey all, seems there’s some knowledgable peoples on here. Looking for some advice as I’m a bit confused.

Im soon to be leaving the business I work for and going out to work for myself so need a laptop. I’ve not had a PC at home for nearly 20 years as never needed one. When I did I gamed a bit on it back in the 90s, UT, ultima online, C&C. Nothing like todays games so not experienced modern pc gaming. Always had the latest PS and Xbox though.
Anyhoo, laptop spec needs to run construction software. Cad and 3d tools plus measuring and planning software. It’s nothing to strenuous, my current work laptop is 4 year old HP and it runs stuff just fine. Just. As I’ll claim it back as a business expense I decided to go for a gaming machine and narrowed it down to the Legion. I know a desktop will be better value and better spec but it needs to be a laptop.

A local store recently had the 5i slim 160hz GeForce 4060 for $800 off however offer has finished although I expect it may move back there for Black Friday. I think the physical size of it is ok too. Thought I was happy with that until I looked direct from Lenovo Australia site. There’s loads of them. With loads of variety with varying prices. Their slim 5i “seems” to be the same spec although a different model number but running at a 34% discount. That’s over a grand cheaper. I’d rather buy from the brick and mortar store nearby as it’s a huge chain and returns and stuff like that is super easy with no qualms , I get all my tvs, consoles and electronics there but for this kind of saving I’d go elsewhere. Now though Lenovo seem to have pro 5i gen 8s cheaper than some of the gen7s and seems no difference. Some slim non pro 7is are cheaper than the 5i.
Some are running 4050, 4060 or 4070!!
Now most are in or near budget. There is a difference in the price when comparing storage capacity but I think I’ll be fine with 512. Going to keep all my work files in one drive anyway.
Im expecting some are probably older models but to be honest all will be miles better than what I have at work currently I’d think and perhaps overkill for what I need as will only game occasionally on it. Im paid up for next two years with game pass thanks to the Xbox live deals so doubt will be gaming much outside of that. Presume I can use pc too as part of my sub.

Am I just suffering options paralysis, like when a supermarket car park has too many empty spaces and you can’t decide which one to have? Or is there a clear strategy to go for here?

Look closely at the specs of the display - number of pixels, refresh rate and brightness (nits). You'll find the non-Pro versions have inferior screens to the Pro.
It should also be easy to spot if they're older models simply by looking at the generation of the CPU.

I am now a PC gamer.

Legion 5i Pro purchased today. So many options and so many versions. In the end went with:

16" WQXGA (2560 x 1600) 240Hz display

Intel Core i9-13900HX Processor (up to 5.4GHz)

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB graphics

1TB SSD storage

32GB DDR5-5600 RAM

For a similar price could have had a 4070 but with 16GB Ram. Been a long long time since I gamed on a PC and my current work laptop is just some pretty bog standard HP thing that does the job but is approaching 4 years old. Im expecting big things from this! :)
