Lenovo Legion Go

I heard today mentioned in a DF YouTube video, that even Microsoft are jumping into the handheld world. That'll be interesting.

I totally agree on the Ally X pricing though, it is one of the best handhelds, but needs to be a lower price.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't of bought one of it wasn't for Currys and their 'too good to be true' 7 day fix promise. I have the care plan which replaces the Asus warranty with a guaranteed 7 day turn around (for about £3/month, so peanuts). Obviously that wasn't going to happen, so when I handed it in with stick drift issues, it got to day eight with no returned item, and I ended up with a full value voucher (which was £599), that went straight towards the Ally X. So hats off to them, and an affordable upgrade for me :D

So far have the Ally X in mind and maybe a GPD Win Mini 2024 with the 120Hz VRR 7" screen or even the MAX 2 2024 model but sadly has only a 60hz screen that one but a full keyboard and can be nicely used as a small portable laptop too... Will see and still thinking what to get, but I really wish the Legion Go had a landscape display with VRR and more RAM and would have been the perfect device... but all so close and all missing some important marks too.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on the GPD devices with the 890M based integrated graphics - though the benchmarks don't show it massively faster than the 780M in these devices but still a reasonable increase. I've a bunch of GPD devices and though not bad I don't feel like the build quality or support is as good as the Lenovo Legion Go has been so far.

Definitely agree that with some minor tweaks like VRR and more RAM (so as to dedicated more to the GPU without leaving the system below 16GB) it would have been a much more perfect device as good as it is.

I just ordered the Antec Core HS A7840U Handheld Gaming Console Bundle, basically the Ayaneo Slide with all the bundle of stuff for it for £550.

Tech Specs

Screen Size - 6 Inch 1080p High Brightness Wide Colour Gamut IPS Floating Screen
CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 7840U
Storage - 32GB RAM + 2TB SSD
Memory - LPDDR5X 7500Mhz
SSD - M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD
MicroSD/TF version 7.0 700MB/s (so easy to upgrade to super fast SD cards that are faster than a SATA SSD)
2 x USB 4.0 type C full function, one at top one at bottom.

Hall effect triggers and sticks too.
ONLY 60 FPS No VRR and Portrait but most games don't go over 60 anyways and will be a nice little emulation pc.

Comes with a really nice free bundle that is worth £150 if purchased separately.

Accessory Pack Includes
  • Core HS Carry Case
  • Core HS Dock
  • Core HS Screen Protector
  • Core HS Joystick Caps

Was thinking about this a while back but was always out of stock and last 6 in black & 3 in white available now with the bundle and Antec will be removing the free bundle soon too and jacking up the price of the unit too, so grab it while on offer and the free bundle and see if you like it and if not return it, what I'm going to do basically try it out and keep it if I like it. Funny I looked at the Ayaneo Slide too a while back but the price scared me at £1000 for the same unit as the Antecs just rebranded and same spec.

Loads of reviews of the Antec core HS and the Slide, same thing just half the price at moment as the antec and a £150 bundle for free.

Will wait for a larger handheld once they have the new chips in them and better OLED displays and more RAM and SSD sizes as standard not the 512GB SSD rubbish given by some and even zotac's new zone ...mehh. Hope it turns out worth it and will be nice as a small handheld for emulation worst case and yes has a built in keyboard and like the screen being able to push out and angle it.

Will let you all know tomorrow as that's when it's coming as I paid extra for next day delivery.

Note: it is £600 direct from Antec for the 32GB + 2TB SSD bundle (all sold out in black & white), so google the only UK retailer that has it in black & white at £550 for the bundle at moment. SO be quick if you want one they vanish really quickly and the bundle offer is temporary and the price for the unit only will go up once the bundles run out as Antec has stated. Also Antec have the 16GB + 512GB SSD version no bundle for £499 and available stock in black & white, the 32GB + 2TB SSD bundle all sold out from them.

I would be very interested on your opinions on this, epscially if you have any comparisons the the rog ally as I'm considering replacing my ROG due to many hardware issues!

Out of interest how is the Slide?

I will let you know when I get it as DPD decided to try to deliver today between 7.30am - 8.30am (delivery attempt supposedly at 8am while I was waiting for it) but really didn't so had a lovely day chasing them up and their fake redelivery later in day that also never happened, but rescheduled for tomorrow now, so will see tomorrow how it is if I get it.

Yes had a play on the original Ally not the X version, also had a play on a steam deck OLED and legion go too. Returned a MSI Claw back to pc world while they had the deal on and the so called performance updates that didn't really fix the issues on it too... So why I decided on this unit at the current price and specs as I was waiting for Zotac's Zone but that has comical specs and silly price.

Will let you guys know how it is and if I decide to keep it.

Antec even state £799 should be the price for the 32GB + 2TB SSD unit without the launch promotion with the free current bundle. In that video.

EDIT: Got it today (Saturday) and will try make time to check it out later today and post my thoughts.

Have to say the more I've looked at these devices or talked to people who own them the more I come back to the Legion Go (which I have) just a shame they don't do it with 32GB RAM, a VRR screen (wouldn't say no to OLED and/or HDR but for me not essential) and wouldn't say no to a little better battery life.

So far build quality wise it has been far better than what I've seen of the Ally and pretty much everyone I know in person with an Ally has had to RMA at least once.

Worth a watch 780M vs 880M. Won't be worth it with the premium prices for sure they will carry on release. But will also wait for more tests once a real handheld comes out with these chips in. Gives a good idea what we will see with his testing.

So we're looking up to 10fps more, decent for a handheld.

Depends on the game it seems, some don't see anything. Seems a 15% increase max with his testing so far, need to really wait for handhelds with the chip to get a real idea too as he's using a laptop with a 880M in vs the Ally X.

Interesting, the size of the legion go has always put me off. How's the size for you?

I had my doubts but I don't personally find it a problem - don't notice the weight or size but someone with hands on the smaller side might have more of a problem with it.

Slide really interests me, I'm not sure is 60hz is a problem as it's only a 6" screen would you notice not having VRR? if so then there's always lossless scaling or AMD's AFMF2 to get it over the 60HZ.

I've looked all over the net but can't seem to find if you can use Lossless scaling on these IE being able to access it.

Lossless scaling works on the Ayaneo slide / Antec core HS same device, tried it earlier and it is on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/. I'm playing with mine today and just setting it up and all the windows updates... windows.... and the AyaSpace software is really good and gives lots of control, very impressed with the Antec Core HS today, I'm keeping it for sure, so far my favourite of the windows handhelds available at the moment at a sensible price and great specs. Also came fully updated to latest BIOS with the VRAM change option in AyaSpace, all way to 14GB VRAM can be set from the 32GB RAM 7500Mhz, firmware for controllers and even a firmware update that allows passthrough power if plugged in and will not charge the battery and can set any charge level you want too on the battery in AyaSpace, didn't see that on any of the other devices I tried. Even the 2TB NVME PCIe 4.0 was very fast when I tested it, so not some cheap drive thrown in.

Also one of the huge advantages with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U SOC is you don't have to wait for ASUS or Lenovo to update their drivers from AMD to work on their devices with the Z1/Z1 Extreme SOCs, because you can download them straight from AMD as I did today and on the latest drivers. Still playing with it and will add more later, but decided I'm keeping it and my brother ordered one today in white too as I purchased the black one and he liked the white, before the promotion price and free bundle ends at £549.99 and he wasn't even wanting a handheld and liked it and thought it was great value. Only 6 black left and 1 white left and all Antec store bundles are gone, so google "Antec Core HS" for the only UK retailer that has them at the moment and allowed to sell them as a bundle launch promotion price and they are even £50 cheaper than what Antec store had them at.

Only thing I have noticed is the sound on it was very average and loud out of the box, but I installed FXsound https://www.fxsound.com/ and fixed the sound issues too and happy with that now too. Just more of an equalization issue than bad speakers on it. MSI Claw still had the best sound out of the box and best speakers, then the Ally and the Slide/core HS and worst for sound sadly was the Lenovo Legion Go, speakers are terrible on it and up firing away from you. No headphone socket is another issue for some on the Slide/Core HS, but I don't use wired headphones on any handheld I ever had in the past but did install Alternative A2DP Driver https://www.bluetoothgoodies.com/a2dp/ so I could use LDAC on Bluetooth as I own a portable headphone DAC/amp an Ifi XDSD Gryphon and use my wired headphones, or can just use a USB small DAC to it if you need to or just Bluetooth headphones/IEMs.. All these ways will always sound better than any handheld device can do threw a headphone socket. So not really bothered it is not there and install Alternative A2DP Driver on my devices anyways and always do that even with laptops and desktops when I don't want to plug the Ifi XDSD Gryphon threw USB cable or TOSLINK.

First thing I noticed was how hefty it felt and solid when I took it out and how nice it felt in the hand and no silly back buttons on the grip areas and the grip that you can actually put your hands on correctly and comfortably without feeling like you going to drop it and the screen was the next thing I noticed much better than the Ally and Claw for colour and punch and very bright too, I remember the legion go had a nice punchy screen too. So far the 60Hz screen has not bothered me and even forgot all about it, controls are really nice all of them a bit small the sticks but again small device, think I liked the MSI Claw sticks better but again they were bigger and Hall effect too, but the Claw had the worst shoulder buttons of all devices I used and didn't like the d-pad too on it, Legion go annoyed me with all the buttons on the side and back and scared me to remove the controllers when I tried it and they felt a bit cheap when removed too.. but the main unit on the Legion Go the tablet part was solid and really nice apart from whinny fan I remember, ohh speaking of fan the device stays really cool, some reviews said it felt hot, didn't have that problem today, felt same as the MSI Claw and the fan has a nice low pitch when heard and not even noticed unless you set it to max and even then sound signature is nice on it and no annoying rattles or strange sounds or high pitch.

I was really happy to see the power passthrough option as I didn't see anyone mention that in reviews (think it is a new feature) and I find it important for battery driven devices as charging all the time while on the dock or charger kills the battery earlier and also with that setting even if the battery dies and you pull it out it means the device will still power up without the battery as some will not, so gives you time to get the replacement battery and still be able to use the device with the charger, and the charger is really nice too not the silly laptop brick with the MSI Claw and I think the ASUS Ally/X also has that silly laptop charger too, the Antec came with a nice small 65w usb C charger and usb c cable that can be removed.

OK will add more later and some negatives if I notice any, only negative I noticed is the keyboard is USA layout not UK so no £ sign, but you can set UK layout on windows, so I have USA and UK option for keyboard layout set and speaking of languages, lots of Chinese language packs installed on windows that I had to remove and the usual windows bloat too not needed on a handheld and things I never use that windows loves to install as optional features, apart from that no ANTEC/Ayaneo bloat .. just the drivers and AyaSpace, which I really like, compared to the MSI,Legion GO control software, Asus one wasn't so bad but the Claw one was a complete joke and some features were there but didn't even do anything...

Ayaspace is fine when it works, but they update it all the time with minimal testing. Re-introducing fixed problems occasionally. Messing up TDP levels. Flat out breaking usability.
On my Ayaneo mini-PC I just stopped using it, as it killed performance with the latest versions. On my Ayaneo Air, I used to use a very old version because they messed it up, and it took more than half a year to undo their mistake. Even though they were aware.
You're happy with Ayaspace on this now, but welcome to the rollercoaster. :D Only good thing, is you'll be able to use Antec for support if/when the plastics crack and when the battery swells, as Aya's support is god awful.

Legion Space is so-so, but so far I've had run in to none of the issues I've seen on Ayaspace.

Yeah Legion Space is so-so and they've just done a major re-write and rumours it is getting redesigned again. It can use a little bit of CPU in the background which isn't ideal - fortunately I don't have to use it much.

now antec is involved maybe the updates will be tested more and released in a more polished state, I mean it's Antecs reputation on the line also and they been killing it recently with their cases.

Ohh I know about the Ayaspace issues people use to have with it but since version 2 that had a full rebuild and facelift people have been saying good things and recent days Ayaspace 2.5 came out too and what I'm on and seems to work great from the testing I did so far, will see over time. But have to say I like it a lot and has a lot of really good features missing on other such programs.

Also there are many handheld programs out there that could be used instead too as the Aya devices are nothing more than stock drivers from the hardware makers, problems come from OEM makers I find with their own unique hardware for their device, like the issues with AMD Z1/Z1 Extreme SOCs that seem to need the OEM of the device to tinker with it before releasing it for their hardware.

In the case of ASUS ALLY/X and Legion Go as you see always complaints drivers are out of date and long time sometimes before they update them for their device. With 7840U/8840U/6840U etc SOCs you just go to AMDs driver site and update them as they appear without waiting for your device maker to make them work correctly for their device.

Why I was interested in the Zotac Zone with the 8840U but it only comes with 16GB and 512GB SSD for £850 UK price, because of an AMOLED 120Hz screen with no VRR and portrait , but did have all hall effect sticks and triggers too, I grabbed the MSI Claw on the deal for £500 because it also had all good specs for the price but the thing still had 16GB RAM but a 1TB SSD but had 7" VRR 120Hz screen to make up for the other shortcomings.. Still no real perfect device sadly. The Claw again had the advantage of Intel drivers direct from Intel but sadly we know the rest even after their so called performance updates, was great for everything else but gaming as the games either wouldn't run or if they did they underperformed or worse stuttered and had a lot do with that and what put me off and returned it, but I really liked the Claw, if it had 32GB RAM and a 78840U/8840U inside it could have been the most perfect of the mainstream devices, had amazing sound too and felt really nice apart from the shoulder buttons were really bad but over time may have got use to them as the clicking point was at the edges of the buttons hit in middle or higher up and no click..

I settled on the Antec because the price and bundle and specs made it a good bargain that I can live with. £550 with £150 accessories free that I would have needed to buy for other devices and 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD and the 6" screen is great quality too apart from the 60Hz and no VRR but didn't even notice an issue with the screen while using it of all things the screen wowed me from minute I turned it on, bright and vivid and crisp detail due to the 1080p resolution at 6".. do I wish for a bigger screen, yes but for another device as I did want a smaller device too, so decided to wait for the new devices with new SOCs and higher spec for the larger screen handheld, once they are out and tested.. but again they will not come cheap as we see with some releasing now on older SOCs and weak specs.. Zotac Zone for £850 is insane, the Claw was also released at £800 and the ASUS ALLY X is also silly to me for what you get for £800.. Have to be real its a handheld gaming device not a gaming laptop/desktop that can do more in their form, yes you can dock the handhelds etc, but I'm sure you know what I mean too. Price needs to be right for what you get and honestly to me the Antec Core HS has fitted in nicely while on launch promotion price and free bundle... at the price they say it will be £799 without the promotion and free bundle, it may still make some buy it due to the 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD.. But I would have thought twice I think. The 16GB version and 512GB SSD of the Antec is £500 as it has no promotion on it or free bundle.

Like I said worst case for this in the future when I get another larger device this will turn into my small portable and larger device more of a full time home device or turn it into an emulation machine only and have the larger device for AAA games.. etc.. Will see so far feel happy about the purchase and hopefully support if needed in the future will be good, my only concern with any device that has a rechargeable battery is can it be replaced and easily and I looked at teardowns and I can do it for this device no issues and even update the 2TB SDD to 4TB+ later too 2280 M.2. single sided. Also this device has power passthrough so will even work without the battery in with the charger. Worst case in future it becomes a charger powered device docked, but Aya has the spare batteries for it as I checked and Antec are also really responsible for support too, so hopefully easier to deal with as Aya's issues seem to be a language barrier issue for many of the complaints I see about them. Hopefully they get better as they now sell their devices to Antec and direct in USA from Best buy so they need to up their support or people will just get refunded if they can't live up to their warranty and support. Also ASUS I have on a ban funny enough about their support and RMA mess they always cause for anything you buy from them and always excuse customer induced damage... was close other day to get the ALLY X but all that in my mind and £800 and need to spend another £200-300 on a SSD update for it and a dock and case.. put me right off.

You mentioned the screen, how is gaming on it with a smaller screen is it massively different to the ROG? Or do you find yourself holding the Core closer to see it better?
