Lenovo x121e netbook

I still have the default Windows install but removed some of the Lenovo tool/software that I don't use. My install currently has around 70 processes running at startup. Boots up quick, resumes from hibernate quickly (I never shutdown, just hibernate now) and is responsive in Windows.

You need to give Windows a few days as it'll spend the first days indexing, etc.

I wasn't asking because I wanted to reinstall windows. I needed to because I've fitted my SSD.

I'll give it a go anyway and report back.

Does the factory setup also include the partitioning of the hard disk or do we have to partition it manually. How can I partition it efficiently in windows 7 as ubuntu allows for disk partition editor??

What is the best ssd to get for the x121e? I've heard it only takes 7mm width ssd's and was thinking of waiting for the samsung 830 which is out in a couple of weeks. What other ssd will fit?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has reinstalled windows on one of these? Can I just take an MSDN iso, and use the serial on the bottom, or does it need special OEM media to work?

Windows 7 is a lot less picky about the original install media than XP was.
I put a fresh windows install on my SSD from a copy of W7 HP Retail media using the serial on the machines arse.

No real problems, drivers are all on the Lenovo website. Online activation wouldn't work, but it was fine over the phone (Didn't need to speak to a human).

My SSD is an Intel 320 120gb. Older controller than the newer models, but it has a very good warranty and plenty of space for remap. I'd rather have something quick and reliable than very quick with corners cut.
The spacer needs to be removed, which technically voids the warranty, but there are no seals broken - i've kept the spacer and will just reinstall it if it goes wrong.

Ordered mine this afternoon to take advantage of the 10% offer code and free shipping through Quidco (which ends today)

I ordered the basic model, upgrading the battery, wireless (to centrino-N) and ordered a sleeve. I'll upgrade the ram myself later.

Is it easy to remove the spacer? Don't want to void the warranty or anything like that.

I can only speak for the Intel 320, but there is no warranty void seal you have to go through. Just remove 4 screws carefully and put the spacer somewhere safe and you'll probably be alright (And they are one of the more reliable SSD's around anyway)

Curse lenovo for their 2mm saving - otherwise i could have continued to use my seagate hybrid.

Benchmarks on X121e after Crucial m4 SSD and 8 GB RAM

Here are some real numbers after replacing stock HDD with Crucial M4 and upgrading to 8GB Ram(Corsair), and updaing the Graphics driver to latest one(from Sept 11 release).

So I have seen a quite few instances of the x121e popping up on German sites with e450 processor. I was just wondering if anyone knew when that might be heading to the UK ?

Finally after 60 days I have my refund for my returned x121e, yay, that was a tiresome affair.

Thing is after all this time I've still not found anything that really does what the x121 does for the money.

quite a few owners in this thread now, I take it I must have been unlucky and got one with dodgy build as no others are reporting issues, nor more broken screens etc.

I am tempted to buy again, is that wrong, anyone throwing this in a rucksack on travels etc, you know rougher handling etc. or is it mostly static home usage?

I'm not sure it will hold up well but that might be that I've been unlucky.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to get myself the x121e i3. I see there's been good discussions on the fan noise, what's the feedback on the heat after being use for a while? The notebookcheck review suggests it gets quite hot.

Also, has anyone looked at the Samsung Series 3 11.6" 300U1A as an alternative? The variant with an i3 CPU is only available on the US for the moment, but they do have one with the E350 avaiable in the UK.

Thanks!

As you said, nothing in the market in that category.

They seem to have got a minor spec bump, they now ship with an
i3-2367M rather than the i3-2357M.

Not sure what the big deal is, couldn't find a benchmark.

Also the AMD models seem to have vanished from the UK site. I wanted to go for a second AMD one for my brother, but I reckon I would be going for the i3 instead.

Righto, looks like its a good 10% quicker. Ordered one for my brother, will be probably keeping it and pass my own on. Evil.

Benchmarks:

The one below is of my late 2009 iMac (just to keep things in perspective):

Nice.

EDIT.: ugh, you have to scroll down pages to see benchmarks

My x121e arrived today. I installed the 4gb crucial ram in addition to the 2gb factory default and I find it peppy enough while multi tasking. Mind you my other laptop has Windows Vista !!! Though I tend to use Ubuntu 10.10 on it.

First time in my life that I have come across a trackpoint and it is amazing in my opinion. Next step will be to install ubuntu 10.10 on it. That will be the real challenge.

Has anyone ordered the thinkpad sleeve from the Lenovo site? If so, does the 11" fit or do you need to get the 12"?

just had to book mine in for repair, if I moved it when it was on by lifting from the right side it shuts down immediately.

not happy.
