** Leopard is here! ** Ships 26th October! **

Oh god no mate, sorry, I knew nothing about this so am chuffed to bits.

I was doing the "ahem" thing cause im definetly not a student :D.

Sorry if it came across that way.

No worries mate - text can not always come across the way you think!

So yeah - you can just pop in the name / county of your locality and get your discount! tis not the biggest crime in the world - and if anyone on here says about licensing of OS X - it's the same from student to common man on the street.

Ok, I have pre-ordered a family pack for £119! So do I need to make a backup before installing it. Upgrade or fresh install?

Which files/folders should I make a backup? Applications (only 3rd party ones) and all of folders under my username?

You need to backup your itunes library (if used), your iphoto library (again, if used) all your documents and so on. All of these should be stored under your home folder. I don't think you need to backup the library folder in your home folder but check with Apple or a more expert user here...

If in doubt back it up.

It is worth doing the erase and install option even if it means backing up as OS X will be much faster.

I have the long-winded task of copying all my data to the file server upstairs (yawn!) but I'd never do an OS X upgrade. Fresh install every time. You will need your 10.4 Tiger disks for iLife after 10.5 has been installed.

Hope that helps!

After much thought, I made the plunge yesterday and hope Leopard is going to be as intuitive as Tiger (if not better). I'm abit annoyed iChat isn't supporting MSN - probably never will but would have been nice...

Thanks, what about applications, the ones I installed?

I bought a MBP 15" out in the USA last month, with iLife08 and iWork 08 pre installed. Looks like I just missed out on the cheap deal for Leopard tho :) but the money saved buying it out in the states more than makes up for that ;) I even got an education discount in the apple store as my mrs is a teacher. Can she get a discount here in the UK for being a primary school teacher? Or can I get military discount? It was fine out in the states, but I can't find anything online about discounts :(

I phoned up to order my MBP on the 18th of Sep, but only got the thing on or around the 10th of oct, or something like that. Thought I would try my luck with the upgrade thing for a fiver, and logged in with the apple ID i bought the thing with, as well as using the correct serial number. The date for delivery on my invoice was 2nd Oct, so I put that in, and it let me go through the whole process!

Put my card details and everything in, and even has an invoice on the apple website now for shipping on the 26th!

A bit lucky methinks??

The date that the item SHIPPED is the date Apple start from (in regards to the £6 upgrade to Leopard deal).

So long as it shipped 1st October or later then you were entitled anyway :)

Just to clear something up..

Apple Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) retail discs DO NOT contain iLife 08.

Apple Mac (Insert machine name here) Tiger/Leopard restore discs contain extra data on a second disc that has iLife 08 on.

If you buy a Machine after 1st of October then you'll have Leopard discs for £6, but I'm not sure if Apple will send you out individual Machine-based discs with iLife 08 on them (it's likely you'll just get a retail disc of Leopard), so my advice is.. if you want iLife 08 then make sure you either have it seperate, or you install it off your Tiger install DVDs.

Anybody else feel a bit, I dunno, disappointed?

I was hoping for at least one or two 'killer' apps. But as the MacBreak blog (I meant Podcast) said it's more of developers upgrade.

I really really hope apple delivers properly for pre-orders this time, since the iPod Touch, my confidence with their pre-ordering isn't anywhere near "satisfactory".

My order status says it's shipping by priority mail :D:D

I hope they ship a few days before, or if they ship from Ireland.. just so it comes on the 26th!

@ Slogan.. I know what you're saying, but some of the "under the hood" improvements are amazing.

Try this, see if it floats your boat a bit more.

I was one third of my way through that when you suggested it. It looks really nice.

I wasn't keen on the transparent menu bar and dock, but they look classy with that background. The green grass Vista screen they had originally did it no favours at all.

Time Machine is a revolution - it's backing up made ridiculously simple. Apple have definitely struck again with that app in my opinion - and I'm not even a big backup freak.

Few nice features, I just expected a bit more from what Jobs was saying a while back. The stuff it had up its sleeve was minor tweaks as opposed to the big 'killer apps' that they were portrayed as.

Will be upgrading though.

Ordered!

Was going to get a family but i'll see if i can install it on my G5 also. The family pack of iLife'08 is stupid, only one disc and no serial so there charging you extra for nothing, hope Leopard is the same, Tiger was.
