Let Battle Commence

SLI was invented by 3DFX.
PHYSX came from ageia
NVIDIA OptiX Engine is based on RayScale.

3DFX SLI is nothing like SLI and crossfire... infact on that front I would hazard ATI are closest to the forerunners on that with the Rage Fury MAXX which I believe used AFR. Although using multi GPUs for rendering predates even 3Dfx by quite a while.

Things evolve but must start from somewhere.

Folding@home on the GPU
Avivo converter on the GPU
So GPU used for more than just gaming started here.
TrueForm
Hydravision
Eyeinfinity
AA & HDR at the same time first.
None have been bought out from other firms
And staying at the DX standards at the first realistic opportunity most of the time.

Eyeinfinity multi gaming has not been offered before in in such a possible way to consumers.

Besides TrueFroms none of the others need coding for in other software that could hinder that softwares operation on other hardware.

And no google needed.

NV 3D shutter is nothing new.

I think ATi is preparing themselves for a price drop. They positioned the 5870 next to the GTX 285 - about the same price, and better performance. It's not as fast as a 295 overall (though it's close in some cases), but it is significantly cheaper. I expect their 5870x2 will beat the 295 quite comfortably.

However, the 4890 is now HALF the price of the 5870, and as it's around the performance of between a 275/285 at the moment, that makes it an incredibly good deal. I think this means ATi has room to maneouvre to bring the price on the 5870 down. Something like:

Late September: 5870 launches, loads of early adopters buy it.
Early November: GT300 launches, is faster than the 5870, but more expensive (say £350).
Middle November: 5870 drops to £250, releases 5870x2 at £400, everyone goes crazy in their christmas shopping.

(This is pure speculation, I have no insider information :) )

I think ATi got the timing right on this, putting pressure on nVidia to come in at an incredibly attractive pricepoint, to be able to even compete.

I think also there's now supposed to be a 5890 which will likely be a bunch of cherry picked 5870's that do 1GHz. This wouldn't surprise me, at least, given the very low limit on the CCC overdrive tool for the 5870 (890MHz I think).

Looks like its a going to be an interesting couple of months and hopefully a close battle between the two parties which should be prices being slashed nearer christmas time.
