Let the games begin....

Why "lol"?

I've been using the trophy 7 for a week now and it's now my turn to run with the desire HD.

The windows phone certainly makes a lot of sense for business; it looks very slick, professional interface with a familiarity to all office users. The way it handles folder structures on emails is very good compared to stock android for example. Great phone that just worked and not much that you could do to break it. This makes it a definite consideration especially for the less technically inclined users in the office.

I've had the DesireHD in my use for the last hour or so, and it is definitely very nice. Solidly put together, does feel a bit more special than the desire to behold. The lack of physical "cursor" for want of a better word (that allows you to move around text/flick down links on a forum without touching the screen) is my first disappointment after being used to the optical sensor on the Desire. Secondly, the screen, which in isolation is great, but when coming from the AMOLED on the desire i still can't help but feel disappointed. It looks washed out almost, at any brightness; the blacks aren't black on menus etc. and the colours aren't as saturated. Also, you can see feint horizontal lines on the screen if you're being overly scrupulous.

The larger screen does make forum browsing that bit nicer though. Speed is similar to the desire, but not quite as snappy: I'm going to put this down to it being a stock rom, whereas the desire is running leedroid which made the phone a LOT faster, if it became my permanent phone the first thing it'd be having done is a root :) far more than capable though as it stands, fastest I’ve seen out of the box.

It doesn't feel that big in your pocket, the profile perhaps make it feel slightly less noticeable than the desire, but it is slightly too big for my hands to hold it the way I'm used to, and I'm not a small bloke! (6'4, can easily grip a basketball in one hand for an idea) I'm sure I'd get used to it though, but it is what initially put me off the DHD bar the screen when deciding what to get my gf (was going to give her my desire and get myself a DHD, ended up getting her a GalaxyS instead)
I’ll report back again when I have more to say. It is probably my favourite for MY phone though, but I can’t see anyone else plumping for it. Everyone else in the business finds it too large and much prefer the form factor of the Desire.

I love the AMOLED on my Omnia 7. I'm sure WP7 looks good on the LG but with true blacks the home screen design really makes sense, the boxes just float in the case as you can't tell what is screen and what is case.:D

Ceteris paribus, AMOLED wins ok, there is no debate. However the larger screen IS appreciably better for browsing and various other scenarios, so if I was administering phones for general business (and was not in an art and design business or something that required IPS or AMOLED) then I would value the larger screen over the better quality colour depth.

One has a tangible advantage in every day business, one does not, no matter how much better it looks.

The viewing angles are appreciably worse as well, I can't read the screen when it's on the desk next to keyboard without lifting it. I really do wish they hadn't skimped on what otherwise is a very high end phone. The screen isn't BAD it's just disappointing in the company of AMOLED.

the form factor had written the desireHD off for all of the employees on the trial except for me, where it probably is the favourite for me despite my comments.

Rubbish, unless you have poor eyesight it really doesn't make any difference. If it was higher resolution (like the X10) then I'd agree with you, but it's not.

I almost went for the DHD but decided a slightly smaller screen made no difference in real terms because what you see on one screen is identical (but slightly smaller) on the other.

Also interested to hear how WP7 stands up to your test, since I have no experience of my OS :)

1) Android and tasks. My MD is the first to try the Desire Z, and Froyo by default doesn't synchronise Tasks! I don't personally use them so have never noticed. Nitrodesk touchdown (a £10 app from the market), does however, so we'll be looking at that. Not tried this on WP7

Yeah that was my biggest disappointment too when I moved to Android. :( Pretty ridiculous considering there's a Tasks applet built RIGHT! INTO! GMAIL!!!:rolleyes: It doesn't synchronise Notes either, though I suppose that's a smaller issue considering there's plenty of free notetaking apps you can download. Notes are usually personal and don't need to be shared, so Exchange sync for them isn't a big deal, but for Tasks it really is, and I hope they pull their fingers out and sort it soon!
There's a couple of free alternatives for Tasks sync btw. They didn't work properly for me, but that might be due to my semi-borked Outlook installation (the data files have been migrated across more computers, Windows installations, and versions of Outlook than I have had phones, so I'm sure they're pretty corrupted by now), so there's no reason why you shouldn't try them:

hmmm, my director has rejected the idea of any of these these phones now, with one major gripe: complexity of answering. This is personally something i've not experienced, but apparantly the whole swipe to answer thing is too much of a faff.

Hmm.

For some, touchscreen answering just does not work. It similar to music players - i still keep my old ipod nano even though i have an iP4 and a Defy. The fact that it has tactile buttons wins for navigation whereas the touchscreen can be a pain at times.

Buyers remorse, then. The larger screen really does improve the browsing experience, fact, whether or not you feel bad for settling for second best.

You can fit more on the screen at a given text size so don't talk balls.

what he's saying makes perfect sense, they're the same resolution, therefore all your seeing on the DHD is an enlarged version of the same amount of data. It's the same as having a 22" and a 24" 1920x1200 Pc monitor, there is no more information being shown at all on the 24".

I do prefer the feel of the DHD but i really can't get over how rubbish the screen is whenever I use any other phone in the house next to it. I'll probably end up getting one though, as there is nothing else really to compare with it except another desire (I don't get on with the feel of the galaxy S). Such a shame to ruin an otherwise brilliant phone with an outdated screen tech.

Zoom out on a normal Desire to the point that you cannot read the text as it's too small.
Now repeat this exercise with a DHD and tell me whether or not there is more information on the screen...

I honestly can't believe I'm having this discussion. Or do you believe that a screen 2" by 1" will be just as good as long as it's at the same resolution ?

It's really not THAT much bigger, 13%? If it was 13% with a higher resolution it would make more of a difference. I'm split almost down the middle as to whether or not the AMOLED on the desire makes up for more than the 13% in reduction in size or not, I think it's a fairly even match.

I've noticed the pretty much only people defending the DHD's lack of AMOLED is DHD owners........buyers remorse? ;)

To me it makes a good difference, browsing forums etc. is just that much easier.

You didn't notice this then:

Ceteris paribus, AMOLED wins ok, there is no debate.

I'd far prefer the DHD to have AMOLED, it's just that personally the larger screen is more important to me, hence...I didn't buy an AMOLED phone. If I had buyer's remorse I'd sell the DHD, get a Galaxy and pocket the change.

The viewing aspect isn't the only advantage to having a bigger screen like the DHD, it is also easier on the fingers for typing etc. The Desire HD is about the only phone I can't get for free though so I'm still using an original one for now. :)
