Let the games begin....

It's really not THAT much bigger, 13%? If it was 13% with a higher resolution it would make more of a difference. I'm split almost down the middle as to whether or not the AMOLED on the desire makes up for more than the 13% in reduction in size or not, I think it's a fairly even match.
Your maths is wrong the % increase in visible area isn't just the difference in the diagonal size, a 4.3" screen is 35% larger than a 3.7" one, and having had a Desire and HTC HD2 running Android I have to agree with Robbie you can do more and see more with a bigger screen even at the same resolution.

For me, browsing the forums is indeed easier on the dhd but it is offset by the lack of optical trackpad, as i usually scroll down the forum links on the desire rather than having to try and click the small links or zoom in

The SAMOLED is certainly better from a media perspective, it is not better for reading text on though, coupled with the fact that text becomes badly distorted if you are zoomed out and it is very small. Something to do with the pentile matrix I believe :)

I was worried about the DHD screen when I ordered mine, but I actually like the DHD screen far more than I thought I would.

hmmm, my director has rejected the idea of any of these these phones now, with one major gripe: complexity of answering. This is personally something i've not experienced, but apparantly the whole swipe to answer thing is too much of a faff.

Hmm.

I get where he's coming from, I miss the hardware "answer" and "hang up" buttons my Universal had... Especially if you need to hang up without taking the phone out of your pocket (say you forgot to switch it off while in a meeting or concert - you just need to stick your hand in there and make the ringing stop, you're in too much of a panic to faff about with swiping!:p) If you shop around I'm sure you can find an Android or WP7 phone with hardware buttons though.

One unconventional suggestion in case you don't want to go back to Blackberries: have you considered Symbian?

To me it makes a good difference, browsing forums etc. is just that much easier.
Yeah, I agree. I haven't handled a DHD myself, but even the small difference in size between my 3.7" Desire Z and my friend's 4" SGS makes a difference when browsing websites.

just out of interest, does Android allow you to do any kind of remote wipe in case its lost? Same with the iPhones and W7 as well. Thats always a large concern for when phones go missing which is why Blackberry's usually win in the workplace. BES really isn't that difficult to setup/maintain and I've never had to buy BES monthly license fee per handset either...

Yes, via HTCSense.com. However not all Android phones allow this. The DHD does, not sure about the Desire.

Android 2.2 comes with remote wipe support for Exchange accounts or if you have a Google Apps shop installing "Google Apps Device Policy" lets your GApps admin do it. Along with all the other remote admin/wipe tools as 2.2 put in core Remote Administration APIs that anyone can use.

Buyers remorse, then. The larger screen really does improve the browsing experience, fact, whether or not you feel bad for settling for second best.

You can fit more on the screen at a given text size so don't talk balls.

:D

Zoom out on a normal Desire to the point that you cannot read the text as it's too small.
Now repeat this exercise with a DHD and tell me whether or not there is more information on the screen...

I honestly can't believe I'm having this discussion. Or do you believe that a screen 2" by 1" will be just as good as long as it's at the same resolution ?

Bad eyesight then...;)

On a normal touchscreen phone (ie one 3.5" and above) with a resolution of 800x480 then to get the writing too small to read would mean each letter would look terrible due to lack of pixel count per letter, unless you have reasonably poor eyesight.

No matter how you argue it there is no more or less information on a 3.7, 4 or 4.3 inch screen of the same resolution, heck , even a mythical 2x1" screen would have the same amount of data (although by that point you would need very good eye sight to read the same small letters, which is probably one of the reasons most screens, other than iPhones, aren't below 3.7").

The only positive in a slightly larger screen (with the same resolution) is visual stuff like videos, but then there really isn't enough of a difference to pick one screen over anothr just for the extra screen estate unless everything else was the same (for example I wouldn't buy a Desire now over a DHD partly because the screen is smaller and all other things are broadly the same, well generally worse).

EDIT: Either way the screen I have at the moment is 4" in size. I wouldn't have had an issue with a 3.7" screen for my new phone (my old one was 3.7 and comparing them side by side it's very difficult to really tell the difference in screen size, same with a 4.3" screen compared to the 4" screen) or 4.3". Due to the almost exact same size I went for the best looking screen, which was SAMOLED. If the 4.3" screen had a higher resolution than 800x480 then I may have very well thought differently (the X10 resolution, which is around 860x480 is IMO a better resolution for internet browsing because of the excess space lengthways).:)

EDIT 2: As monitors were brought up I'll just point out that I would rather have a 20" 1920x1200 screen with IPS than a 24" 1920x1200 TN screen as well. Resolution is king, unless you go tiny (such as Sonys 13" 1920x1080 screen *squints*).:p

That is the only thing that annoys me about the SAMOLED screen, it's not quite as clear as my 3.7" HD was due to the pentile matrix. Still clear enough for me to read forums etc so fine by me.:)

+1, except with my HD. I still press the search button on my Omnia 7 to end calls because of this, which is a little annoying as I have to navigate away from the search page and back to the call to end it properly.:p

You can do it on WP7 as well, along with the usual check where your phone online and ringing it.

Samsung Galaxy S settings allow the button to be used to answer calls but unless you're the firmware designer you probably haven't seen it because they hid it in the depths of options hell:

Settings > All Calls > Answering Call > Answering mode (enable) > Answering Key (enable).

Bonus edit: this is in my 2.2 Firmware at least (dialer: *#1234# - Last 3 letters is the firmware ID, this works on JPY for me)
