lets talk wallets!

Shirley it depends. Is most leather a byproduct of the food industry? What leather production isn't?

Is stingray skin a byproduct of the food industry? Or are they hunted primarily for it? If they're hunted primarily for it, is the meat used? Is it done sustainably? Etc.

You need to have the answers to those kinds of questions before being able to compare, no?

Good lord! Yes, it obviously does 'depend' - perhaps I should have taken the time to write 'in principle' and saved you from pondering the big questions :p

I don't know what sort of mental assessment could have taken place in anyone's head (when pondering if stingray leather was more distasteful than cow leather and concluding "it's not really worse, is it?") other than 'if it's sustainable and not cruel... it's not necessarily any worse than any other traditional animal based resource'.

Or, In other words, I'm deeply irritated you can't read my mind. Work on it.

How you were able to extract a debatable topic out of it is another matter - I assume you're on holiday :p

I had a ducti....

When it was new:

After 5 years:

It's aged horrendously. My cards have absorbed the weird adhesive smell. My notes used to get glue stuck to them as you can see in the second picture. I spent more time plucking out pubic hair from between the joins and sticky deposits than taking out cards and money.

Would recommend as a disposable/temporary/gimmick wallet only.

I've had the same brown leather wallet with cream stitching for 13 years now. It still looks in good, and the leather has that pleasing 'aged' feel to it. I doubt this wallet cost me more than £30 in 2002, so that was money well spent.

Part of me is tempted to replace to replace the wallet with something flashy and new. But another part of me is thinking that I should persevere to 20 years.

Ducti do a free replacement service. I've had 3 in the past and each one lasted no more than a couple of years before falling apart or turning into a gluey mess.

My current leather one is OK, but i think it's designed for America. Its not quite tall enough so any note bigger than a fiver sticks out a bit.

You know it's supposed to go outside your pants right!? :p

Coins in pocket where they belong, then in coin jar when you get home. Wish cash would die. Cash is only used for drunk nights out and chip shop. Everywhere else is easy to use card.

I love 'contactless' especially Apple Pay but cash still has a place, accepted everywhere, no reliance on technology and, for some, has the useful feature of being untraceable.

As for wallets. A good genuine leather one. No gimmicky wallets, please! :D

One for every day and one for abroad:

The daily one is leather and must be over ten years old, got it in Naples airport and it will last for a good many years to come. The Animal is also quite old and looks indestructible.

Stick to good quality leather ones and you can't go wrong.

Been using a Dash Wallet since Jan and its been holding up well, no loose stitching and still looks good.

Dash wallet

x4 Cards top slot, debt in side slot, can also slip in 2-3 (maybe more?) notes of folded cash and small change in trouser pocket. Does me good.

Seems nice, but since getting Trove, I won't ever look back at anything that produces a larger footprint.

I've got an eelskin wallet and it's fantastic, 3 years old and still looks like new.

In the winter it goes a tiny bit crinkly when out in the cold and in the warm is stretches back out and goes smooth again :)

I looked at the trove and really liked it, in the review I've seen the cards stick out slightly though, do you keep it in a pocket on its own or with other items like change and house/car keys?

Usually pocket on its own or with the car keys. With time the leather stretches, but after a year this is how mine looks:

I don't normally carry cash, but the odd fiver folded up in there works fine alongside a receipt or two. Behind the Trove label is a hidden compartment to store a small key or whatever else, which is pretty neat.

Thanks, that still looks great, think I'll try one :)
