Lewis Hamilton on Top Gear tonight

I disagree, he may be laid back, but he's pretty arrogant.. remember the whole Ice Cream thing? Or shouting at his pit crew not to talk to him?

I honestly think he just wants to do as little work as possible, he's super lazy. I believe when he was at Sauber he would sleep in the motorhome until half an hour before the race! It must get pretty annoying having someone chirping in your ear all the time as well, he's the one driving the car so he probably knows to keep the tyres warm etc. If his engineer was telling him the tyres/brakes weren't up to temperature then fair enough but he wasn't :p

Personally I think F1 drivers should be arrogant.

They have to have that self belief, the drive to be number 1. They have to have that self entitlement to believe they should be in front of the pack, or not let that other driver through, otherwise what is the point. It's what makes them and they all have it, just some conceal it better than others.

Any man that can do what they do week in week out is allowed a little arrogance to be honest.

Give 0.5 seconds to reaction time of the man pressing the "stop" button on the timer and he is still 0.6 seconds ahead.

Remember to allow 0.5s for each lap (ie for SV's lap as well) depending on how accurate TG want to be on those particular days - it might just be .1 ahead

Im not saying it is this , and Im not trying to put LH down, its just a matter of fact (on the other hand SV might have been 0.5s slower and LH 0.5s faster)

New tyres even on a average car is probably worth .1 hahaha

edit - personally I prefered the few seconds of Eric Clapton to the rest of the show lol

What was the very first thing he said after arriving in F1 that made you dislike him ?

Can't remember exactly, but it was something along the lines of how great he is.

He knows there's a big section of the British public that don't like him. Over the last few years he's been doing ever more desperate things to try and endear himself to the all those that he turned off in the first place.

Brits love to cheer for the underdog, Mansell, Hill and Button have all been the underdog at some point and gone on to win the Championship.

Perhaps Hamiltion is so desperate to be the underdog, that maybe it's the reason he's gone to Mercedes.

You'd think he carried on like 'Prince' Naseem the way some people go on...

At the end of the day we all have our own reasons why we like some personalites and why we dislike others.

To some, Nigel Mansell was boring, moaning Brummy with awful facial hair and zero personality.

But he's my sporting hero.

Self confidence and arrogance are different things though. One is good, one bad. I think you could have one, but not the other.

I can understand why people don't like Mansell, but I'm yet to meet someone who doesn't have the utmost admiration for the bloke. He had to do things the hard way (including selling the family home) in order to make it into F1, then when he got there he didn't have the most natural talent ever... but damn did he try, and for that it he's almost lovable.

Likewise I can understand why people don't warm to Hamilton. The British love of an underdog (and he came in looking like he'd dominate), the fact that his PR company basically pulled the covers over the eyes of the gullible in his first season, and the way Alonso was basically cast aside by his own team.

Alonso's only got more popular since that moment in Hungary where the internal politics came to light for the public. His Mansell-like determination in and the fact that he was never favourite made him rather lovable.

Hamilton on the other hand has gone the other way. The cheat-gate issue of 2009 only served to confirm to many of his doubters just want a PR-controlled idiot he could be.

Look at that Saturday in Hungary in 2007 and who'd have thought back then that it could have swung like that.

That lap was exceptional, he drove it to get the most from the car and it was beautiful to watch him play with such a mundane car. Top of the tree talent, one of the best of all time, reminds me of Senna in a 190 so much. Moan about his persona as much as you like, the boy can pedal with the very best of the sport.

Hmmm Our nige was born in Upton-on-Severn Worcestershire not birmingham but oh hum.

And LH first words in F1 was....."HI great to be here" so wrong again....

Back on topic...

Well done Lewis..an awesome lap...

I've just seen the interview/lap and I honestly don't get the problem some people have with him. I thought motorsport fans were better than football fans but it seems we like to harbour similar levels of irrational resentment towards someone for the smallest of reasons. It really is pathetic.
