Lewis Hamilton on Top Gear tonight

Janesy, it might be that motorsport fans see more of Lewis than his rare appearances on Top Gear.

You can make judgement on the commentators here as much as you like - that's your prerogative and that's their view. Don't for a minute think that this is a single one-off timed lap. Mercedes PR were there in force...

Less than the others, by the looks of it.

No corporate branded clothes, no car on display, nothing. Other than it being mentioned in conversation Mercedes weren't on show at all.

They didnt really NEED to be - it was huge news when he signed, and Top Gear is aimed at those people who for the most part would already know about LH moving to Merc.

I still suspect there were PR people behind the scenes however

(hmmm I presume TG studio stuff is also filmed relatively "live", ie within the last week. I know a lot of the outside testing is shot weeks /months in advance - Im just wondering if Merc persuaded the TG producers to put LH's feature earlier in the TG season)

Of course, no doubt. But it was much lower key than any other F1 driver that has ever been on the show, with the exception of Schumacher, and thats because he wasn't driving for anyone when he was on.

Vettel and JB came on after already having raced with their team, rather than just switching (in regards to wearing corporate clothing), so circumstances are a little different

edit - but then its been drummed into the viewers that Merc are a little more relaxed in this sense , so its this as well.

So much irrational hate for a very talented person.

Thinking someone is arrogant is not hate. I think his over confidence puts people of him. It's not very British. Also listening to him publicly blame his team when things didn't go well was annoying.

Apart from his attitude I think he's great for the sport. At least he has character and challenges on-track (for good or bad!).

You'd think a team would want to show off their new star driver as much as anyone else.

But yes, it was even mentioned that Lewis has less corporate BS to deal with at Merc, so the casual non corporate style was obviously planned.

Analysing an appearance on top gear really?

He looked as relaxed as he did when he appeared on the show when driving for McLaren, Skeeter makes it sounds like he turned up the last time with a PR lady next to him while wearing a full McLaren racing suit...LOL

p.s He never

IF the audience already know, is there any "worth" in draping the driver in merchandising?

(dont get me wrong, corporates do it all the time - I know this full well, but Im dubious that it "adds" anything on this kind of show).

On a general "magazine" style show that covers everything - corporate branding would be everywhere I would suspect.

Thought it was an alright interview, he did seem pretty relaxed. Was a great time though over 1 sec faster.

It's strange how that car seems to be getting faster almost every go :p

I just watched it last night myself and that was an amazing lap. I don't think it's the car that's getting faster but the person that's in it. Think back for when he got within half a second of Stig's dry lap time, I mean seriously half a second! I always knew he'd beat the Stig easily (and Vettel's 1.44 flat) if he drove in the dry and he did just that. I wasn't expecting almost 2 seconds faster than his last lap though.

a good bit of TV. Top Gear does this well, like when Clarkson manages to win those epic races, overcoming all sorts of unforeseen obstacles with the awesome power of car!
