LG 34GK950G, 3440x1440, G-Sync, 120Hz

I just got a confirmation from DHL that my 950G will be delivered today. However I won't have long enough DP cable and the cable I ordered is still not shipped, I only have long HDMI cables which means I will be limited to 50 Hz by HDMI 1.4 until DP cable arrives, so I will only look at things like bleed, glow, brightness, OSD and etc and generally picture quality. I won't even be able to compare side by side with my LG 34UC98 because my GPU has 3x DP and 1x HDMI, for whatever reason.

Please at least, upload some pictures for us

So it is time for some initial impressions. I did some side by side comparisons with 34UC98 with my brother's PC (G4560/GTX 1050) as I wait for long DP cable to be delivered tomorrow so I can reach my own PC (6900K/RTX 2080 Ti). I have a lot of things there, including some HDDs on the loose and everything cooled with AIO, so carrying all of that through a narrow attic ladder just for one day is not a good idea.

Color: UC98 has a bit better out of the box setup because 950G oversaturates the picture and there is no sRGB preset available. This however is not a bit issue after some adjustments, and you can always decrease saturation in games by other ways than monitor's OSD\

Brightness: 950G is brighter by a good margin, 100% on UC98 is around equal to 950G at 80%

Sharpness, font, etc: both displays are doing a great job and are basically equal. Font is sharp and picture looks very clean and natural, the opposite of all available VA ultrawides. 950G has noticeably less DSE than UC98 when scrolling though websites with bright backgrounds, basically none at all

Blacklight bleed: similar for both. 950G has a bit more in left bottom corner, but this is noting unusual for a display of this type. I have seen much worse

Glow: and here we get to the very bad part. Glow is ridiculous and what is the worst part it is very intensive even when the screen is viewed from up front with most optimal viewing angles for real usage. There is a massive difference in how the screen behaves from different sides, from the left is looks good and better than UC98 in terms of glow, but when looking from the right it has ridiculous glow. Don't know if this is a flaw of this particular unit or if this is characteristic for this panel, but it looks very bad. I see the same behavior like on some old poor 3800R ultrawides like Dell U3415W or Asus PG348Q, you can sit exactly in front and you will still have most of the screen covered with yellow glow. Something that UW3 panel from LG UC88/98 solved very nicely with just a little bit of silverish/blueish glow, consistent from both sides, as good as it gets on ultrawides. 950G is back to the terrible yellow glow from old 3800R panels. I doubt exchanging a unit will help here, it never did with these 3800R ultrawides, so why now. I will contact the shop and see what they can do, but it is extremely unlikely that exchanging for a new unit will help.

Aside from that the screen is very good and a worthy upgrade from UC98, but this glow is far from acceptable or usable.

I also tested G-sync for a bit, playing Warframe at 3440x1440 on my brother's PC was obviously not great with performance and fluctuating around 40-50 FPS, which is exactly the best way to test G-sync. The difference is amazing, lower framarates look way smoother. Don't know why I didn't get G-sync earlier.

Some pictures:

Here is bleed, from 2 meters away

So no major bleed, not an issue

And here is glow, from 50 cm distance:

I am literally having deja vu from 2 units of Dell U3415W that I have tested 3 years ago. The same thing exactly, slightly darker scene appears and everything is already covered in yellow glow.

Oh wow. So much more in-depth than I expected. Everything sounds great except for the glow, which sounds a bit worrisome. It also make me not want to order from abroad. I am gonna wait and order from some big store here in Sweden so I can return mine if it has the same issue. Great work. Thank you.

Here are some very wobbly pictures showing the difference in glow between UC98 (on the left) and 950G (on the right).

When viewed from the left, they are comparable, and when viewed from the right, the glow is crazy on 950G, it is basically turning light brown :p

I have a lot of experience with displays and TVs, I got through many testing, returning and exchanging in past 3 years. It took 4 tries to get UC98 back in early 2016. Back then I made LG 34UC88/34UC98/34UM88 Monitors Thread on OCN and Dell U3415W vs LG 34UC98-W vs Samsung S34E790C comparison and review on Linus forum.

Knowing what I know from all the experience I got, 950G looks pretty hopeless. I don't believe that exchanging for a different unit will help with anything. There is some unit to unit variance, but cmon, no way there is that much, this is mad.

hmmm.. Did TFTcentral test IPS glow on their setup ? I cant remember.

Here is what TFT said about the glow on their review of the Freesync version...

"On a black image viewed from an angle in a darkened room there is a characteristic pale glow introduced to the image when viewed from a wide angle, commonly referred to as "IPS glow". On some of the older 34" ultrawide IPS screens like the Dell Alienware AW3418DW, Acer Predator X34 and Asus ROG Swift PG348Q the IPS glow was more white and more noticeable than here on the 34GK950F. The glow gave a more purple hue and was a little less obvious we felt on this newer generation of panel. It's still there, but somewhat improved.

This type of glow is common on most modern IPS-type panels and can be distracting to some users. If you view dark content from a normal head-on viewing position, you can actually see this glow as your eyes look towards the edges of the screen. Because of the sheer horizontal size of this 34" panel, the glow towards the edges is more obvious than on small screens, where there isn't such a long distance from your central position to the edges. Some people may find this problematic if they are working with a lot of dark content or solid colour patterns. In normal day to day uses, office work, movies and games you couldn't really notice this unless you were viewing darker content. If you move your viewing position back, which is probably likely for movies and games, the effect reduces as you do not have such an extreme angle from your eye position to the screen edges. The glow effect was a little less than on flat ultra-wide screens as the curved nature created a smaller angle between your eyes and the edges of the screen."

So clearly not what krzychowiec has experienced on his 'G' version. I can't imagine 'F' and 'G' will be any different... we will just be at the mercy of the panel lottery once more. Typical. :(

Anyone know if the input lag on the 34gk950f could be helped with a firmware update? Or is it unfixable.
It's the main thing putting me off buying it right now. I don't really care about GSYNC or ULMB I just want a responsive ultrawide with ULMB :D

There is certainly some variance and panel lottery, but this much? Just look at my post above, how can there be such a huge difference in glow between looking from left and right? You have to look slightly from the left to get sensible picture, looking from up front means half of the screen covered in glow. Like I said, exactly like with the old 3800R panels.

Yeah, clearly yours is unacceptable. I wouldn't want to use that monitor at any price, nevermind a four figure one! Very unfortunate. I wonder if the reason you got one so early was due to someone sneaking them out of the LG factory early before they went through QC properly? Who knows?!
