LG 38UC99 - 37.5'' 24:10 3840x1600 75Hz IPS FreeSync Strobing Backlight

The 34-38" curves with the 3440x1440 and higher resolutions are the screens of choice, I might be bias because I have one but I do love it. :)

I sense an upgrade to 38" incoming!

Can't say I've seen any flicker but could this be down to me using a amd card, I wish I had a 1080 to try to see if it made any difference to me

The flicker is caused by the monitor itself as the backlight is strobed on and off rapidly. So the graphics card will make no difference. It's stoning at 75 times a second so you may not see it at all. That will vary by person really. If not, then great you can enjoy the benefits without worrying :) I'd recommend turning blur reduction off for desktop use though to protect your eyes

@OldGamer

Are you saying that you don't see any flicker whilst using the strobe backlight ('1ms Motion Blur Reduction') setting? Sensitivity to this does vary. Some people would notice it and others wouldn't, but looking at a monitor flickering at 75Hz for prolonged periods could certainly fatigue the eyes. Whether you 'notice flicker' or not. So as Baddass suggests it's a setting for gaming but not general use. The monitor offers flicker-free operation normally, with the strobe backlight disengaged. :)

indeed i am saying i see no flicker with blur reduction, but the only prolonged use is gaming, for non gaming use i have not noticed any eye fatigue which i did have with the samsung 34".

ive found for playing games the blur reduction is better than using freesync but this could be down to the fury tri x not keeping in the freesync range but this is pure guesswork on my part.

ive played a fair bit of cs go and my results are better using blur reduction.

im very interested to see how others get on with it

fair enough, thats good and not everyone would perceive it. As PCM and I have said, i'd def still recommend turning it off for non gaming uses to protect your eyes :)

Hi there

Be quick, the stock is selling far quicker than expectation and I just ordered more stock which is around £150 more expensive excluding VAT, so the price shall be going up!

I'm looking for a monitor for PS4/PC gaming, mostly FPS and/or racing sims, is this ideal or will it suffer motion blur?

I've been out of the PC hardware loop for years and noticed there's all sorts of updates with refresh rates and gsync but I don't know enough about them!

I was looking for a display that has USB-C so I can use a Macook Pro on too.

Strobe mode at 75Hz doesn't sound like a good idea. 90-ish maybe, for me, is ok. I want 30" 4K 120Hz Gsync Lightboost IPS for £500 and no panel edge blur/bleeding/QC issues.

ive looked at this a bit more, when I checked my display settings the monitor was somehow running at 60hz and I didn't even know( ive always known high refresh rates were wasted on me).

when I set it to 75hz the flicker on the desktop was evident and I did not like it much in games.
the odd thing is ive been playing cs go at 60hz with blur reduction on and been doing pretty good so have been sticking with it.

have to say I'm loving the picture quality on this monitor, rise of the tomb raider and gears of war 4 look stunning

Just registered to chime in. Received my 38UC99 today and just hooked it up. Awesome monitor! Had it shipped all the way to Denmark since OCUK is the first supplyer in EU to receive one. AND the price is awesome from UK with the current exchange rates (thank you Brexit I guess...). Too bad this results in price increase on next batch. But 1500$ and 1400€ does not equal 1000£ these days. Bargain right now. :-)

Back to the monitor I come from a Dell PLP setup 20" pivot + 30" + 20" pivot with 4960x1600 resolution but with besels. This LG monitor is fantastic and the perfect replacement. It is in no way too big for me. And the included software is great for productivity and sorting windows around the desktop.

It's my first freesync monitor and so far I can't really feel it much. I am running 75hz presumably and there is no tearing, but the feel is not much different. I have a R9 Nano (FuryX) and I have dips down to the 30's FPS where freesync should be off. I can't really see or feel the difference when I am running within freesync range and outside the range. Need to play around with it more. Are there any test software to show that Freesync is working and what the range is?

A few (too few!) sessions over the weekend and I am more and more happy with this screen. It has an amazing image and size is fantastic for work and gaming.

A few annoyances:

The external power BRICK... WTF were LG thinking? It is ENORMOUS and the wire from the screen to the brick is so short it HAS to sit on the table, which completely ruins any effort to have a nice design. The screen itself has a super nice design, but then you have this short wire to a GIGANTIC power brick that has to sit on the table. And this short wire can't be changed - only the mickey mouse cable to the power plug. Giant design fail by LG. If I at least could have a long wire so I could tug the brick away under the desk somewhere but no can do (and I even have a tiny desk).

No2 design fail is the stand-by blinking light. Yeah LG decided that when you switch off your computer the screen will have the white light in the button under the screen blink like insane. Maybe it's trying to teach us to switch off the screen entirely because stand-by is bad for the environment, but seriously this light is insane. Ok it can be fixed by switching the screen off, but just another design mistake. You don't want to have this screen go stand-by if you intend to stay in the same room.

Minor things, but since LG is reading this forum I want to let them know. :-)

Headline still is that I LOVE the screen. :-)

You can turn it off by going into the menu but there's no half measure it just turns it off completely (even when its on)

Just pulled the trigger on this and a GTX 1080 to power it! would have loved to have been able to make the most of freesync but there is nothing presently that AMD offers that can power this resolution smoothly. Maybe when Vega arrives I can look at swapping if required....

Glad to hear a lot of positive comments from new owners. (Power brick aside!)

I'll be certain to leave my impressions once it arrives and I have spent some time with it.

The only thing I can change is the LED when the screen is ON. I have that set to off so I don't get the white light under the screen. However there is no setting for when the screen is in stand-by. Then the LED starts blinking unless I switch the screen off entirely.
