LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

How did you turn off 10-bit color?

Regardless, 1.2 without 10-bit color is completely pointless with this display (3440x1440 8-bit @60Hz fits within the bandwidth of 1.1), so even if it works the effect is the same.

As 95% of users will not be using 10-bit color they are best turning off 1.2.

Question for mrk, or anyone else who uses a monitor arm with the 34UM95. Are there any specific requirements for the type of desk you can clamp this to?

I'm considering getting the Ergotron MX arm, but I have a fairly cheap desk from Argos. The top of the desk feels reasonably sturdy, but I'm not sure whether I should risk getting an arm if it's going to potentially fall over and break the screen!

Edit: Actually scratch that, I just checked the back of the desk and it's completely flat, i.e there is no lip for the monitor arm to clamp onto so I'd need to drill holes in the desk to even fit one :(

I'm thinking about buying one of these but I have concerns about its suitability. For various reasons, my PC is located 10m away from my desk/screen and I currently have a 10m dual-link DVI-D cable installed between the two. It's heavily cable-tied, run down the back of immovable units, going through walls, etc. I really don't want to have to unpick it all and replace with DisplayPort.

Does this monitor absolutely require DisplayPort connection to the PC or will Dual-Link DVI -D suffice and give the same experience?

Ok, so it looks like the monitor doesn't even have a DVI port! I need a 10m DisplayPort 1.2 cable retailing at around the £100 mark. Ouch!

There is no DVI interface - only DP and HDMI, so thats a no really. Time to upgrade your cables - and the distance might prove too far for DP but I would have thought HDMI would be possible.

Edit: What's the length limit with display port?

When I upgrade my monitor I'm thinking about moving my desktop into the unheated corridor behind the wall where it will be mounted.

I'll have to drill though some quite thick cinderblocks though. I'm guessing display port would make the most sense due to the size of the connector plus the ability to achieve max refresh rate?

How about using the HDMI input with one of these DVI to HDMI adaptors ?

I'm guessing that adapter essentially throttles the bandwidth of the connection to back to HDMI though? It's taken some digging, but I've managed to find a 5m DisplayPort 1.2 cable that does the requisite 17.28Gbps.

I'll let you know how I go.

Just sold a few bits that I didn't need, so I just bought this monitor for a raw cost of £160 :D

If it turns out nice & am happy with it, could even sell my current monitor too!

Be nice if I could get into MM though.

Well unfortunately the first one that I received last week had to go back as it developed a fault within a couple of days. OC were very good with the return and the replacement arrived on Saturday and although I am totally in love with the size, aspect ratio and 3440x1440 resolution, the bleed/glow is really not what you would expect for something that has just cost over £650.

Interestingly this replacement monitor is a rev1, whereas the original was a rev2 but I think the replacement is probably a little bit better. However the only way to get the glow down to a vaguely acceptable level is to turn the brightness down to about 10% but then the colours start to look a little washed out too.

So I am now just debating in my mind whether to send it back and go for the Samsung curved 34" VA as I am thinking that maybe IPS at this size just isn't for me. That said the Samsung is another £340 on top of what was already a pretty expensive monitor.

Decisions decisions...

Well, if it is glow then that is just the panel type, cost won't fix that. If bleed, why not try the credit card into the bottom trick to loosen the pressure on the screen bit?

Samsung do a curved 34" VA? I mean I know they have this model at a curved, didn't know they did it in VA.

Can you confirm how exactly to to the credit card trick? Insert the credit card until it doesnt go any further to reduce pressure..or???

At the bottom corners there is a black plastic strip about 1-2cm tall across the entire front of the monitor - stick a credit card between that strip and the screen near the corner and lever the strip out 1-2mm. You only need to do the corners - the 90% in the middle can be left alone.

Don't ram it in, push it in slowly - you can use finger nails too its not overly hard to pull out that way. Just do the corners with the bleed - sometimes its only one but usually its both bottom ones. You can't do the same with the top corners as there is no strip.

Thanks just got my monitor but it has a strange "smudge" on the bottom right..is this normal for an IPS display?

The image isn't the best for working it out but judging by the shape and size I'd say it's a thumb pressure mark. Only you know how carefully you lifted it out of the box and into position on your desk so not sure if it was your fault or someone being careless at the factory if this is indeed what it is.

Well, it's with regret Ive decided to RMA my second UM95 as the bleed just isn't good enough given the monitor cost me £660. So I've just placed a pre-order for the Samsung S34E790C 34" VA which is on "this week only" at £799, on the basis that it's not LG and not IPS and now only a modest increase in cost ("this week only" has reduced the cost step up from £340 to £140). I'm REALLY hoping this one will be trouble free.

Still a massive fan of 21:9 @ 1440p though so cant wait to get the Samsung - hopefully still in time for Santa! :)
