Liam Payne, who shot to fame in the band One Direction, has died at a hotel in Argentina after falling from a third-floor balcony, according to officials. Payne, 31, was posting on social media only hours before his death.

This has come as a bit of a shock as he's only a couple of years younger than me. While I wasn't a fan of his music or one direction as a group, I've still seen the come up from their auditioning days.

Yes, exactly what I was thinking too, most of them along the lines of him being desperate for attention. No idea why they started and I looked up his name to see who he was at the time.

I'm hearing things surface around his abusive relationship with his ex - who apparently has a book out soon documenting a lot of this. Also heard his former band mate had pinned him up against the wall about some of this abuse.

Wonder whether the shame and embarrassment was getting to him before any of this stuff with his ex came out.

yeah I read somewhere he threatened to kill himself before as a means of controlling her.

Yeah this is very recent, i think i saw something a couple of days ago that she was getting the police involved because he wouldnt leave her alone and kept contacting her i believe she initialised a cease and disist/no contact lawsuit recently. Maybe he was on a binge and did himself in, that is the speculation anyway.

Not sure if true but apparent pictures of his hotel room are doing the rounds - totally trashed, tv smashed and hard drugs everywhere... Fits with the phone recording to the police I guess. Always makes me wonder - when you arrive in a new country how the hell do people end up with that many drugs? If I'm abroad and I need some paracetamol it's normally a nightmare to get hold of

There's a rumour on Reddit that the hotel staff barred him from going into the pool because he was so intoxicated, so he might have been trying to access the pool via the balcony. Who knows with these sorts of things. There are already loads of rumours like in previous comments in this thread.

It seems pretty clear that drink/drugs were involved though.

Its very hard for people in that industry. Its easy to say "dont do drugs kids" but unless you have experience in that industry its easier said than done.

Read one report and the way they chose to state that he died was one I've never seen before:

"Payne is said to have fallen from the third storey and sustained injuries incompatible with life"

I just found it odd phrasing.

As for the drink/drug reports, there are numerous sources so it's probably a good bet.
