Lies of P looks incredible

I'm really enjoying this, have only ever played one other souls game (Elden Ring) and that was on release so not for a couple of years. The graphics are awesome, the mechanics are exactly like Fromsoft games and the level design is definitely inspired by them too.

Currently just at the end of Chapter 4 and will try and finish this - hopefully before lords of the fallen in a couple of weeks.

I completed this yesterday, I've started NG+ and gone with a different weapon and build.

Some tough fights for sure, a couple of bosses got nerfed recently, I managed to take em down before the nerfs though!

I've had to farm some more starlight shards for this 4th boss, and may need to level my vitality a bit as I keep running out of stamina during the fight. First stage is simple but second I can't move out of the way enough!

Vitality adds to your health pool, Vigor adds to your stamina, but running out of stamina sometimes is normal, and you need to back off a bit to regen it.

I also had to level up a bit before taking that boss down.

Started this tonight and quilte liked it for the 70-80 minutes I played. It's got a nice eerie atmosphere and is graphically pretty good. While the combat and movement felt a bit "off" for me at first, I think it's getting better. I guess I am so used to From and Team Ninja games there's a lot of muscle memory to fight against when things are a bit different. The game seems to demand parrying with quite tight timings, and it's off-putting how there doesn't seem to be much reward for it. No enemy flinching, no building posture meters. I think it does make them enter a state where you can stagger them, but you can't see it building up and you still need a charged heavy to get them to the vulnerable position.

Probably been spoilt with Sekiro's brilliant parry sysytem (though I thought Wo Long did that quite well too in its own way).

Tutorial boss was not very difficult, so I don't know how that means the difficulty stacks up to the From games? I often die at least once to the tutorial boss, but didn't here. Though that giant police officer thing after Hotel Krat killed me three times. Plus in true Soulslike fashion I had my first death to gravity as well.

Decided to go with the Advance stat and found an electric club thingy to use, which seems neat. Though I am very much not in love with how much your weapon bounces off any nearby surface even if it doesn't look like you're swinging into it.

Shaping up to be quite promising so far, overall.

I think there are some good/challenging fights as long as you don't use the spectres, which will certainly make some of the fights easier.

I need to try out Wo Long at some point, is on my list :)

I really enjoyed Wo Long. It's much more in the Team Ninja style, so if you were into Noih then I would recommend it.

One thing I did really quite strongly dislike when I started Lies of P that I forgot to mention is the lack of keybind options. You can't rebind WASD, and you can't bind anything to the numberpad. I really hate it when games don't accommodate this properly. I very nearly just uninstalled it straight away. In the end I set up an AHK script for it, but it was a pain and not something I should need to do for a PC game.

Also, rebinding the "interact" key meant it intermittently would just stop working and I'd need to rebind it again. That one had to be added to the AHK script too. All a bit shoddy on that front, sadly.

One other thing is that the extra bag slots aren't dispayed on-screen by default, so I can never remember what's in there (and holding down the interact key to bring it up is not ideal in the heat of fast-paced fights). This needs to be an option in the display settings, I think.

Oh, and a couple of times I teleported to a stargazer only to notice once I'd set out into the world that P had spawned in without a weapon. That led to an annoying death as there was no way to attack. Had to teleport away and back again.

But, other than those things, I am looking forward to getting back into it this evening.

I use a controller for this type of game so didn't have the same issues as such.

Did have the weapon thing once, but there is a button to switch weapon that will change to none if you don't have a weapon in the 2nd slot. Wonder if you inadvertently hit that?

Yeah, I thought it might be that, but I couldn't swap weapons either. After I died (before I noticed I was running around empty-handed), I still had no weapon on respawning, couldn't make a weapon appear by going into the inventory and changing what was in each weapon slot, using the weapon swap key, nothing. The only thing that fixed it was warping away and back again at the stargazer.

On the controls, I think I saw a poll that indicated only about 15% of people use keyboard and mouse for this game, and I guess it's probably about the same for most Souls-likes. I only ever use KB&M, though, and have done for every one of these games. So not only am I in a minority there, but as a lefty I guess I am in a minority of about 10% of that 15%! But I am a firm believer that all PC games should make all keys fully rebindable. It improves accessibilty and there's just no reason for it not to be done. Fromsoft and Team Ninja are actually pretty good on this issue, but other developers not so much.

Weird then that isn't a bug I saw at all!

I'm on Chapter 5 I think.

Game is OK. Its very simplistic in its mechanics. Not as sophisticated as a FromSoftware game.

Quite grindy, as I find I have to grind levels to beat bosses.

There are lots of mechanics to use but I find I just use the simplest available to me. My sword and upgrading via ergo.

Just got done with a playthrough of this last night, contrary to my experience and disappointment with the demo, I actually ended up enjoying this. It sounds like they tweaked a few things in time for launch and with subsequent patches, it felt much better to play to me from the get go.

They got the story and world spot on (people say it's like Bloodborne in tone but I got more Bioshock style vibes from it), the combat mechanics were nothing special, pretty much what we've had before but solid and well executed. It all felt pretty polished and well thought out. Maybe not one that I'll go through again, I feel once through was enough for now, but I'm interested to see where they go with DLC/Sequels.

Main gripes were that the weapon durability system was pointless really, it just served to slow you you down for 5 seconds every once in a while. The fall damage was a consistent nuisance, it seemed totally random and way overboard at times, especially when it suffers from the same dodgy platforming issues the other games like this have. The weapon blade/handle swapping is a good idea, but some felt so much better to use than others that it kind of killed the desire to experiment, I used pretty much the same weapon throughout the majority of the game simply because it's charge attack was better than anything else I ever came across. Same with the legion arms, I just used the flamethrower and falcon eye the whole time because the ranged attacks were too good to pass up.

The difficulty was odd as well, on the whole I'd say it's probably one of the easiest types of these games, I'd steam roll through most of the bosses first try, then hit one that would stump me for a few goes. On those bosses more often than not it was just a case of figuring out a single attack or sequence and that would be the difference to inflicting massive damage and trivialising the whole thing again.

Chapter 10 and 40 hours later....

My initial review of this game was a little bit harsh.

Yes it is a simple Souls like and not as sophisticated as a FromSoftware game but it is still good if you are looking for another Souls Like experience.

Ultimately its enjoyable and recommended to those that like these types of games.

No idea how I missed this. I've just picked it up and it plays fantastic.
The art style and beautiful graphics look amazing, and I can't belive how well this looks and runs on the handheld Ally also.

Nice and straight forward, rewarding gameplay that doesn't quite make you give up, but does feel very rewarding once you get past a tricky part. And yes, I found the first boss a proper challenge who took a good few attempts, but was thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm not much further on from that, but I'm looking forward to sinking some time into this.
