List of Programs for which Quad Cores see REAL benifits

I am debating going the quad core route and wondered exactly how many programs (excluding Benchmarks and professional applications) can make use of a 4 cores?

Perhaps we can make a list of programs/apps showing where C2Q's > C2D's at the same clockrate.

not benchmark or professional? probably very few. SupCom can use 4 threads but not 100%. New games are sure to be made for quad or more cores but as yet they are all still just in the pipeline.

I have yet to see the benefits of quadcore, except when video encoding with programs like tmpgenc which uses all 4 cores.

Just get a quad.

Its the same price as 6850 but with two extra cores.

Quads clock to you know!

To the same degree as a dual?

E6850s are hitting 3.6-4Ghz on air with relative ease whereas this could well be beyond the reach of most Q6600s. If the app doesn't use the extra cores then a faster clocked dual will beat a slower clocked quad.

There's also the heat issue to deal with as not everyone wants the noise that goes with cooling a majorly overclocked quad on air nor the hassle of water.

Not as clear cut as it seems.

I went with an E6850 for the above reasons. Have no need of a quad atm as I don't do anything which needs four cores. Got it easily clocked to 3.6 (not bothered pushing further yet) and there's no guarantee I could get a Q6600 to that speed and I don't want the cooling issues that would go with it.

By the time there's enough quad-optimised stuff out there to warrant it, Penryn will be around and I'll upgrade then as the chips will be faster and cooler than the current Conroes. If by some chance a shedload of quad-optimised games appear in the next few months then I'll consider chopping my E6850 in for a G0 Q6600 but right now I don't see the point.

Alan Wake, the game, will be able to use Quad Core computing. It is, like many other applications benefiting from Quad Core processing, not available yet. These Quad Core applications seem rather elusive at the moment. The hardware had surpassed the software for now.

Well I'm sure there are a 'few' power-users out there who really do encode video and fold at the same time as they game, but most mild mannered overclockers tend to be blokes and we don't multitask that well! :D

After a bad Crosshair fried and wasted 2 seperate AMD 6000+'s, I tomorrow get a Striker E and a E6850, this build was a fill gap till new tech out late in 2007 or early 2008, so I opted for the better dual than a non native hot quad as nothing will matter for this timescale for my use.

Exactly. When I have need of quad, I will get one of the new ones. In the meantime, I'm taking advantage of my higher clocked E6850.

what does your 6850 clock to?

4.5ghz?

I ran my 6400@ 3.8ghz 24/7 what does the 6850 giveyou over my clocked 6400? :D

what speed are you running it at?

Quads clock and the 6850 is a waste of money IMO

Azza is already @3.4ghz with his quad making your statement meaningless.

When I get my G0 Quad Ill be wanting 3.6ghz + underwater and this should be easy to achieve.

2MB cache.

LOL

We all know this means very little in real terms having tested nearly all the C2D range.

I Knew the answer anyway!

My point was 165 gets you a 6850 or a quad.

Its an easy answer imo.

TWO EXTRA CORES

Not everyone has/wants/can have watercooling. It would take my cats approx. 1 or 2 days to puncture one the hoses to the rad.

Also, with my luck, I would receive one that doesn't clock very high at all. Quite similar to my videocard.

But whatever, I'm happy with my purchase and that fact you disagree matters little to me. :)

I think it depends a bit how long you going to keep it, if you going to keep it for a few years then quad better as it will get better as games support more cores if you going to upgrade in 3 to 6 months then i guess 6850 best now as you will upgrade soon anyway.
I would go for the quad as i would keep it 18 months orso but waiting for dx10 games to come along so i can get a new base system then.
