Lit Fibre

My Virgin Media Contract (M250) is up in Feb. I have been with them for many years and have been happy with a very reliable service. They can also offer up to 1 gigabit at my address, however I understand it’s not FFTP, just to the box on my street.

However Lit FFTP have been available at my address for the past 18 months or so and I am considering giving them a try as their 500 and 1GB prices are considerably lower than Virgin’s.

However, I have read that the Lit router can’t be put into bridge/modem mode. I currently connect my Virgin Media hub to my Netgear Orbi mesh system. I guess I could try and work with just the Lit router. I know the Virgin hub gave somewhat poor signal to some rooms upstairs though.

Should I move to Lit though? Have people found them to be reliable and easy to deal with?
Lit are OK. Nothing special, but not to be avoided. Their installer was super-helpful, their CS can be a bit hit-and-miss. For the price, I'd definitely add them to your shortlist. I can offer a referral code should you wish to sign up with them

Thanks for the replies both. Just mulling it over at the moment. The other thing that I am worried about is the engineers having to dig through my front garden to bring a new cable to the house.

They didn't dig for me, they used the existing Openreach duct

I don't have an Openreach duct. The only lines to my house are the old BT phone line which runs along poles on the street to the house (I don't have a land line so this is defunct) and the Virgin Media cable line. So, I guess CityFibre/Lit will have to run a new cable to my house.

Thanks for the replies. It would be good if they are using the overhead, that puts my mind at ease regarding my front garden. I understand that I can now pick any CityFibre provider too. It will be a big step for me to move from Virgin after all these years though! I know people complain, but my service with them has always been super reliable.

LitFibre brought their services in via the telegraph pole right outside my house. There were no issues installing the ONT into my loft office, one swift drill through the wall and the fibre was pushed through!

When I had my LitFibre installed they uninstalled the BT ONT (they used the BT cable with their gear).

Can I dispose of the BT ONT now?

I was thinking the same. I am also using my own router, so can i throw theirs away, or do they still own it ?
I've kept mine to use as a modem just in case they change something and my router is no longer compatible. It's also useful for troubleshooting as they will always turn around as say the issue is your network. With their router it's their issue regardless.

I believe the BT ONT is BT's property. When I had an openreach service the installer said the ONT had to stay with the house if I moved. I have had letters through asking for routers etc. back but it's been for services the previous occupants had so I've ignored them. I'm guessing it's part of a e-waste incentive they have to meet because old routers are useless to them past a certain age.

My understanding is that if Lit use the Openreach fibre, this is laziness. They're supposed to use their own fibre, leaving Openreach's fibre alone. Therefore, the Openreach ONT would remain in-situ, in case of a return to Openreach-provided services in the future.

If Lit have used the Openreach fibre, the Openreach ONT could be disposed of, as if a return to Openreach-supplied services is required in the future, Openreach would have to reinstall an ONT, and they'll more than likely ask Lit what the hell they did with their ONT (i.e. not your responsibility)

I didn't realise that Lit was also available on Openreach. Openreach won't be available at my address until late this year (according to the website). However, Lit have been available for nearly two years, initially exclusively. However, they were purchased by CityFibre last year and not long after, most CityFibre ISPs were also available at my address. I later read that CityFibre had then sold Lit (to the original founders), however Lit have not regained exclusivity for FTTP at my address. I am just interested in knowing what the story was. Was the purchase by Cityfibre a strategic decision to acquire 'rights' to the Lit network?

It's not - what's being referred to above is Lit patching the Openreach fibre into their network in the cabinet/pavement box, rather than running their own fibre from the cabinet/pavement box to the property. Lit aren't supposed to do this, it should all be their own fibre

Oh I see. That doesn't sound good. So Lit are still building their own fibre network? Does it not fall under City Fibre now?
