Liverpool 08

Last visit was September. I agree about Brummies, I can't stand them either.

Yeah, there is a lot of building/ redevelopment work going on but the city is turning the corner finally. I've lived all over and you are quite right about us scousers being protective of our city. However, I am the first to admit that there are many, many better cities in the World. My fave is probably Barcelona. Liverpool is a great place though, a good night out and lots of friendly people. Unfortunately Harry Enfield ruined the image of the city forever with his portrayal of Scousers in curly wigs.

Thankfully I live quite a bit out of the centre now, right by the sea and work in London most weeks so don't have to spend tonnes of time in Liverpool. Unluckily for me, I have been posted on a project in Birmingham.....

It all kicks off tonight and i'm sure that a city i am proud of will demonstrate all of it's qualities over the course of the year. My hope is that the year will help Liverpool to alleviate many of the stereotypes and to change some of the hearts and minds of those who have a negative opinion of the city and it's people.

Do you think Liverpool will do a good job as the capital of culture? Do you care? Am just interested to know your general thoughts really.

Didn't start too well for me lol. I was being employed to film the fireworks, but got accosted by scallies and got no footage.. (so I finished out of pocket, nice..), and tbh, I love Liverpool, I've lived here for the last 4 years. But let's not pretend that it isn't a ****hole (I will say the same for most UK cities!), with an idiot majority. If it weren't for the reprobates and booze casualties it would be such a nice city :(.

Well that's me ****ed then ;):D.

I believe Glasgow had it (at some point?) and that place is still a hole, so don't hold out much hope for any improvement.

I'm a photographer and the Capital of Culture has created so many events for me to photograph. Of course there are issues with it. Its the UK. Of course the people at the top are out of touch with whats really needed. So yes there should be more of something and more of this. There's a boat load of construction going on right now too, however the majority is totally unrelated to Capital of Culture. The contract for the Paradise Street Project was won before Liverpool won the Culture award. It would be nice if it was finished now but its not. Shops open in about May, gardens in about September from what I've heard. Biggest construction site in Europe. The new canal link at the Pier Head will look great when that opens later this year too. I'm quite biased because I'm a photographer and Liverpool always has photo ops. Amazing architecture, lots of interesting events, and great light. More people visit galleries and museums in Liverpool than any other city in the UK. Theres a lot of the "culture" that people don't get. I know I don't. I'm not "arty" or anything so theres a lot I don't go and see. I could easily say that I can't think of any other city in the UK that should have won it simply because I don't live there and don't know what they have to offer. I live closer to Chester than Liverpool but never visit, theres nothing of interest there.

My Liverpool photos. Hopefully they'll inspire a few people and show you how amazing it is. I've just returned from the 08 Launch. Say what you will, what a photo op!

Like others I really couldn't care less. When I first heard about this stupid title I actually cried with laughter.

The fawning and self celebration will just make the rest of the country hate Liverpool more than it does already. Scousers have even bigger chips on their shoulders than Jocks!

Capital of culture - what a waste of ******* time and more importantly money.

Do you know Dave Evans CyKey?

* calm down , calm down *
Haha I laughed :)

I live in Liverpool and went to see the celebrations earlier tonight. It was extremely cheesy although it did have a few good moments (like the guys crawling around the big screen). They only had two songs too :(

Alright, I admit it the accent can be annoying sometimes - But I much prefer it to all the other accents in England (apart from the Gloucestershire one).
Also most of the construction work is around the docks area, which I personally don't visit much. Litter level doesn't seem much different to other big cities. But yes there's an aweful lot of scals (chavs). The young ones annoy me most.

PS. I think you all need to come down here just to see the cathedral. I look at it in awe every time I pass it!

Sa Béarla le do thoil / In English please. "Wow" causes me not to stereotype? What?

It's a crap city. I have had the misfortune of spending a couple of days in it on a few occasions and the place depressed me. One thing I learned in my time there, don't tell a scouser you don't like Liverpool, they all display a deep rooted insecurity about their city and can't accept criticism.

Scouser? You won't mind being called a paddy then will you?

Yeh ok but just because you don't mind such things, doesn't mean everybody else feels the same. Of course you clearly are extremely arrogant so I doubt you care too much about this, there are many Irish in liverpool....they obviously prefer it to your country.

I was there tonight, and tbh, i was disapointed! :(

Fireworks sucked!!, and the performances were nothing special.

Most of those guys couldn't actually play an instrument which made us look like fools in liverpool and for tha majority it was pretty miserable :(

They should have gotten a pro who organises pop or rock concerts for a living or something to organise it. They've had how long to organise and this is all they come up with for Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008. :(

I love Liverpool as a city , had some amazing nights out there , its just this whole city of culture concept that baffles me

True!

Mostly second generation or those who moved over during the troubles due to lack of work. I didn't say that any cities in Ireland were any better (even though most are), I just said that Liverpool is rubbish and overrated.

Last time I was in Liverpool I was in a bar called Pogue's and bumped into a fella in the bogs who lived about 150yards up the road from me, Later that night, I bumped into a girl I went to school with. Half of my hometown must be in Liverpool.

Haha, one of my favorite things about Liverpool is the Irish. Well, the Irish lasses, but none the less. There's a bit of 'cultural' diversity in action ;P.
