Liverpool 08

One thing I learned in my time there, don't tell a scouser you don't like Liverpool, they all display a deep rooted insecurity about their city and can't accept criticism.

You've never spoke to me then ha.

I really hate this city and I can't wait to leave it. I hate how it's acceptable to be racist, I hate how high the chance of being jumped when you go out is, I REALLY hate the accent (yeah, I hate my own accent).

there are many Irish in liverpool....they obviously prefer it to your country.

theres many irish every bloody where , dunno how they manage it !

at uni here theres probably more irish and scousers than anyone else (excluding all the Chinese

anyway i dont have a clue how liverpool won that award

Do you know Dave Evans CyKey?

I've met him in passing and see him around town a lot.

As for tonights performance, well yeah the fireworks display should have been grander but I'm guessing money was spent elsewhere. They also had to pull some at the end due to weather, which was a bit disappointing. I'm assuming there will be a huge display on 20th August, at least I'm hoping there is.

Generally I really like Liverpool as a city, and for the most part liverpudlians are some of the friendliest people I have met - as long as you don't criticise their city - I only hope the money from capital of culture gets spread around to the more impoverished areas a lot more than it is already.

I think overall the capital of culture is a good thing, as Liverpool has never fully recovered from the economic recessions of the 80s, and unlike equivalent cities such as Manchester, has not fully enjoyed the economic and cultural rennaissance of recent years (I know a number of liverpudlians will hate me for mentioning that, but it's true). Hopefully this year will just be a kick-start for continued growth and development.

I have 2 major gripes with the whol capital of culture branding though:

1) I was hoping it would be an opportunity for the city to downplay the Beatles (on whom they've been dining out on for the best part of half a century - and I feel this is a major factor in their struggle to keep up economically in recent years), and promote all the other diverse, exceptional new talent within the city. But who opens the ceremonies, Ringo bleeding Starr - complete with freaky hybrid scouse accent, and total lack of knowledge about modern Liverpool - bleating on about the Fab Four, and generally prancing round like it's 1963

2) The fact that until Liverpool won it, I'd wager more than 90% of Britain hadn't heard of the Capital of Culture, let alone have the ability to name a single other winner. Perhaps worse is the fact that Liverpool has promoted itself as being the sole most cultural city in Europe ever since winning it, perhaps most grating since the honour for '08 is shared between them and Stavanger

Let the stereotypes rollllll, baby. :p

I've lived here all my life, and been to many cities in the world. Liverpool isn't exactly modern, but it has a lot of culture. It's changed a lot in the last year alone. :)

The stereotypes are what keeps Liverpool from growing in the public view. People are so easily led to believe things they've never seen or experienced.

I didn't make it to the launch, but I'm sure I'll be attending many of the events over the next year.

(yeah, I hate my own accent).

Lived here all my life, and I don't really have that problem.

Don't ask me why, though. My whole family/friends have it. :p

I never really 'got' Liverpool. It's a shoddy looking city, loads of derelict buildings, litter everywhere, a large proportion of the locals wear tracksuits (moreso than anywhere else I have been to) and everyone speaks with the most annoying accent in the world.

How did it manage to get the title of "Capital of Culture" when there are loads of other cities which demonstrate and celebrate their culture in bigger and better ways.

The only problem Liverpool has is the number of irritating Irish refugees that infest it.

Anyone else find it ironic that they win City of Culture but then start knocking it down and re-building it?

No, not really. Its not like any of the important buildings have been knocked down, just the old junk. They've done great work in cleaning up a lot of the buildings, and are continuing to do so. St Georges Hall looks amazing now. Tower Building across from the Liver building also looks stunning.

Fixed that for you ;).

Hahahaha, a landlord said something similar to that once in ear shot of my Mrs, didn't go down well at-all (et-all) (the Mrs of the time was Irish). It really is like little-ireland, but I think that's a good thing. The Irish aren't the ones stomping around the city on a friday night causing mayhem bro.

Well yeah if you cross the road from the Anglican Cathedral you're in a rather run down looking area, that being Toxteth with all the bordered up houses and things. Wrong side of the tracks etc. Its a shame about that. They should be doing something to clean up Toxteth and Kensington and etc. They should be involving more local artists to show off the city. Its like anything though, people at the top don't agree with people at the bottom. Olypmic logo etc. I'm just glad of the photo ops. New Echo Arena looks quite stunning.

The thing that bugs me is they are spending all this money knocking stuff down and kicking out the locals(toxteh is literally gonna get bulldozed) and doing the place up to bring in more affluent people.

Why not save money and spend it on sorting out these areas problem instead of moving everyone somewhere else and containing the problem (drugs, uneducated, poverty) there instead.

Capital of culture - what a waste of ******* time and more importantly money.

there are bigger wastes of money... atleast this money is going to this country

I live in liverpool... and yeah, there are bad parts, but the city looks really nice and so does the peir, stupid title... but atleast theres a few things being fixed up

still building work everywhere though

and who is paying for all this capital of culture carp, mmm maybe its the fleeced taxpayers again, i dont care its just another shoddy self celebration of nothing worth celebrating

Actually, it's not. Well, some of it will be coming from council funds, but not much. From what I've read, Liverpool was awarded the title and told they'd be reimbursed the money they spent, but it's coming to light that that's not the case and that the money isn't coming from anywhere.

Besides, you're sounding like an anti-monarchist. If the event brings a boost to the local economy then it's worth the expenditure.
