The thing with Vieira was he was good enough to be in our side just due to his defending or he could get into the team just based on how good he was in attack. I reckon they could play off the strikers or play in CB and not have problems in either role. However players like Gerrard/Lampard are more attacking players who help out in defence.

Sorry to burst your bubble bruv but I think Gerrard is WAY better than what Vieira was/is and that his all round game is much better than Vieiras. You may think i am biased cos im a pool fan but Patrick as an attacking force?No way, he has possibly one of the worst shots i have ever seen; Keane (who i dislike too) was a lot better and we all know Gerrard has one of the best shots around. And the fact that Gerrard can play any position on the field (except in goal obviously) is testament to how much better he is. Passing? Short range both are good but Gerrard is MILES ahead of Vieira in the long range passing; lets not forget his crossing too. And when Gerrard has been in the centre of midfield he has been fantastic too. And for goals scored well again i need not mention who wins here. Cast your minds back to the CL final and look at Gerrard, finished the game at right back; hes playing on the wing at the mo the guy is so versatile it isnt even funny. He has way more talent than PAtrick will ever have.

Vieira good, yes, but one of the greatest NO WAY. Gerrard, well the guy is off the planet and pretty much dominates Vieira in every department (IMO).

And as for Sissoko, give the lad time; the fact is Arsenal need a player of his quality at the moment and there is no denying that; so saying he isnt that good is pretty pointless as he's better than what is at arsenal at the mo. and as for this talk of the new Vieira, lets talk about players making their own names and not being 'the new (insert name)' ; give the new talent out there its own credit.

Having a better shot and cross doesn't make Gerrard a better player. Gerrard is clearly a much better attacking player but I was talking about the overall package and overall Vieira was better than him. Most of his fantastic long range shots and passes usually end up in the crowd rather than where he intended. The best way to judge them is to look at them head to head, when was the last time Gerrard ever got the better of a player like Vieira? The words never come to mind here. Gerrard was asked about 1.5 years ago what he learned about Vieira after the FA cup final a few years back and his reply was something like " I learnt Vieira is a much better player than I am". Some of Gerrard's best performances have come when he had Hamann by his side as he was free to attack, same way Lampard does well with Makelelelelele. Some of Vieira's best performances have come with the french legendary enforcer Giles Grimandi by his side ;) His last 2 seasons for us Gerrard probably was better because Vieira had a huge drop in form hence him leaving but from 98-03 apart from Keane nobody was near him.
