Hey guys,

I've just got a form from my uni saying I've got a room blah blah blah etc. And it's finally starting to dawn on me that I've never had to live anywhere on my own so I really dont know what to expect.

So basicly, has anyone got any advice/stories/incoherent ramblings about living in halls that they'd like to share with me and the rest of the community? :p

1 - do your washing up (or you'll be remembered as the dirty one, come January they might not want to live with you as you are "messy")
2 - Keep a spare loo roll in your room
3 - Be generous with your food
4 - Drink lots
5 - Meet girls
6 - Do stuff
7 - take photos

4-7 not related of course :p

Can you work a washing machine?

Do you know how to iron?

Can you prepare some simple meals?

:D I'm in the same position as you (although I'm moving into a private house as of August) and these are the bare minimum things you need really.

With halls, I'd imagine you just need to get to know as many people as possible to have the most fun, that's what I'll hopefully be doing around where I'm living.

washing machine ? Uni washing machines has 2 buttons.

Put money in, press 1 for colour, press 2 for delicates

Never touch an iron all the years i was at uni

meals....i can do big meals, but i know people live on potatoe faces and turkey dinosaurs. But learn how to cook real pasta with some ready made sauce will make you look like Gordon Rampsey.

are they shared halls? as in 8 people in a self contained flat or are they corridors with individual rooms? my halls were ****! even the worst house i have ever lived with was better, i didn't even have carpets, the floor had a million dents in it and the (shared with the whole corridor) bathroom and kitchen were old and mouldy that said:

It is a lot of fun in halls and best way to meet your neighbours so to speak is in your shared kitchen if this is the way your halls is set up. As my Uni halls at Heriot Watt was 5 bedrooms to a common kitchen so we had a chance to mingle there and get to know each other.

when you arrive dump your stuff and head towards the Kitchen, thats if you live in the halls, then make friends with one or two then sugeest the SU bar, head straight to the SU bar, and just find the the best looking girl and an hour or two later while you still able to string words, head for her and chat her up before some one else does. Take her back bang her then you have 2 options depends if you want a g/f . :D

Prepare to be awakened by drunken mobs at 4am bringing you presents of road signs, gas cylinders and various for sale signs. Funny at the time but not when accomadation officer comes for inspections. Also if you have to live with messy flat mates you'll prolly end up living in a squaller, i remmeber my 1st year flat vaguely as an open tip :o so its possible to end up eatting a lot of takeaways/carryouts.

First few days you'll meet a lot of new people who are in the same position as yourself just act yourself and you can end up with good friends throughout your uni life.

Fingers crossed for you living with 4 other girls, crossed my toes that they are all fit ;).

Then meet them all at the kitchen first night, suggest head down to the union for drinks. Buy a round in, ask the normal questions, where are you from, what course you doing, what you did at A-levels?...blah blah. Get another round, before you know it, breakfast at Tiffany's

Living in halls is a blast, i've lived in catered and regular now, moving into a house for next year. The freedom to do whatever you like, if I did half the stuff I got away with in halls at a house then i'd have an ASBO or be evicted lol, I'm going to have to tone things down for living in leafy suburbia.

First day in halls has to be about an hour unpacking and the rest of the day drinking with your new flatmates. In fact last year on our first day we went round the whole block and invited every flat round to ours. We must have had 200 odd people come round that night, it was fun.

The people you hang out with in the first couple of weeks will almost certainly not be the people you are hanging out with by Christmas. Just roll with it. You'll likely find yourself hanging out with anyone while you find your feet.
