Living in University Halls

i know its off topic... but..

a) i currently have a barclay current account, should i change this to a student account.. plus ive got confirmation on my loans and stuff for uni already... obviously this will be connected to my current account... if i get a student account will i have to let the student loan company know?

b) when am i likely to find out what accommodation i am in? just i havent seen them all.. and if i get in one of my "lesser" choices ill have to go up and have a look before i move in

c) when am i likely to be actually moving in my accommodation... as ill need to arange some sort of transport for all my stuff...

sorry for deviating :p

Hmm, personal experience? :p

I've got to go to Uni in two years  I will probably very nervous, and I know that others will be too, its a godsend threads like this as it tells you quite a lot of what you need to know :D

Ok, i'll write something more substabtive now, you ready?

No particular order, i'll just write it when something comes in my head

1 - Bring your own pans, plates, forks and stuff. But nothing you are not prepared to lose or break.

2 - Always have change for the washing machine and drier.

3 - Get some bleach for the loo

4 - Get Friends on DVD, all 10 seasons. I am serious !!! Almost every girls love it, get scrubs too for the lads.

5 - Always have some alcohol at hand, get a bottle of vodka or what not and keep it at your room, only use it for the occational drink or when a lady friend comes around.

6 - Do your own washing up in the kitchen, don't leave a mess around. And now and again empty the bin too.

7 - Don't pack the freezer with your stuff, be considerate.

8 - Always leave your door open when you are in

9 - Be open, don't judge people on first impression, you might miss out on some really good friends.

10 - Don't lent anyone money either, at least for a while, you might never see them again.

11 - Keep your room tidy and clean, you don't want to be the messy and smelly one.

12 - Learn to cook, i have not seen a girl at uni who can cook in the first year. You'll have them wrapped round your fingers if you can cook somme decent grub.

13 - If you have a car, don't be afriad to charge people a little towards petrol if you all go somewhere quite far.

14 - Do a few Tesco shopping trips together, it's fun doing it with friends

15 - TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES, I really regret i hardly took any when i was in plymouth uni, prob because i didn't have a camera then but i really wish i had.

16 - Don't be too loud with your music

17 - Have a collection of films, but don't lent it out to everyone and anyone. You might never see it again.

18 - Be nice to the warden, you'll see him for the next 10 months.

19 - Be prepared to take some practical joke, and be prepare to do it back :D

20 - Don't take CDs, mp3 them all, save SO much room

21 - There are posters sale at the start of the year always at the union

22 - Some people steal ketchup and sauces like that, don't get so hang up on it.

23 - Get a mini fridge if you can afford it in your room.

24 - If you don't have a printer, get one.

25 - Get a Laptop with a external HD or a shuttle, don't need a full size PC.

26 - TFT saves so much room too, CRT is ancient ! Make it widescreen if you can afford it.

27 - Don't play with the fire distinguiser, you'll get fined !

28 - Learn to drink out of a pint glass, because you'll be doing that a lot, even when you are sober. Because they'll start surfacing everywhere, not just in pubs.

29 - DO NOT, SERIOUSLY, DO NOT let people know you know about PCs , you'll ended up being the tech guy who everyone comes to get their problem fixed for nothing. Not worth it, specially when you can't fix it and they blame you for it.
30 - There will be drugs going around, don't be tempted. People won't look down on you because you don't participate.

31 - Oh, check under the draws for some hidden treasures ! (if you can call them that), I've always found things under there, sometimes unintentional like an essay or a pair of thong ! but I've also found little gifts the previous person left behind. My mate did too in her room, and we both left our own thing behind when we left.

32 - If your room don't come with insurance, get some, cost about £5 a month.

33 - Always have a stock of asprin for hang overs.

34 - Opened tin canned food does not go in the fridge, yuck, and you might kill yourself. Put it in a bowl first.

35 - If you have a choice betweem surfing the net or go hang with friends, choose friends.

36 - Get a hard to kill pot planet to liven up your room.

37 - Corridor Cricket is dangerous

38 - watch your spending, it is tempting to spent it as you have all that loan but it goes....FAST, EASILY.

39 - Learn to spot who just want to be your friends to take advantage, and who can be real friends early.

40 - Have a jar of sweets in your room is also nice, again, girls love them. ;)

41 - bring bluetac for your posters, whitetac don't stick as well. If they don't allow bluetac as they leave a mark, use white toothpaste, when its dried, it sticks, when you take it off, wipe with wet towel will get rid of it

42 - If you have an old stereo or old TV that you don't give a crap about, put it in the kitchen/communal area

43 - Have emergency snacks, for those late night chats in the kitchen or after you know but don't want to leave the room.

44 - In the first few days, report any damage already in your room to the accomodation service, so you are not going to get blame at the end of the year. No things is too small, even chips off paint or gum on the carpet.

45 - Bring some coat hangers with you, there might not be any.

46 - Ready meals are expensive, more so than real ingredients.

47 - Be prepared for the 4am fire drill, then be prepare to see people come out half dressed and may be some got interupted mid way. lol

48 - Get some post-its, great for leaving messages for your friends on their door.

49 - Don't lent your friend the library card !!! You will get fined when they forget the books.

50 - Don't go too mad on Freshers Week, you want to be able to remember it, and talk to people and make friends. Passing out means you'll miss it all.

I'll write more when i think of them.

amen. ill print this out and stick it on me wall ... so its always at hand

Uni halls will most likely be very friendly and more like communal living than living on your own.

Make friends with your immediate neighbours first and you should do fine.

Student account will probably give you more benefits as a student but it doesn't mean you necessarily need one.

Maybe after exam results have come out, I think it depends on your university and whether they've unconditionally accepted you.

Normally the weekend before Freshers' Week.

My bit of advice would be to relax, it seems scary but everyone else is in the same position and after a week or so you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about because you'll be having such a great time.

oh, and don't try too hard with girls, coming across as desperate really won't do you any favours :)

cool :p

quite a few girls nowadays are terrible with food..... :s i work in a kitchen and they really are rubbish employee's....

no offence. but all girls are pretty (redeem myself)

lol... carry on people

i already know that one... i learned that lesson young :p 20% care and 80% casual knocks them for six

only for the first few nights out with them like.

when is freshers week.. or is it different with different uni's?

Freshers is normally the week before lectures start but that depends on when your uni starts.

Girls are getting a really hard time in this thread, we're not all useless :p

How'd you find Aberdeen? they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse (although it's my second choice ;)).

when you arrive dump your stuff and head towards the Kitchen, thats if you live in the halls, then make friends with one or two then sugeest the SU bar, head straight to the SU bar, and just find the the best looking girl and an hour or two later while you still able to string words, head for her and chat her up before some one else does. Take her back bang her then you have 2 options depends if you want a g/f . :D

Listen to this man, some of the best looking ones are absolutely gagging for it.

My advice for halls is go for a proper hall with fully catered, big communal dining room. Nothing wrong with self catered flats but you will meet a lot more people down big corridors in your hall.

Don't be SHY, i was for a bit then opened up. Go and meet people, make jokes, and just have a laugh. You will soon have the girls swarming :D
