And good old Lybia needed to be a crucial ally in the war on oil, or is that terror, or is it oil terror, anyway get the patsy, send him down make like we are all friends again and, its just politics after all, its not like the governments care about a few hundred dead bodies when there is oil to be had.
 
US officials have said the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing should serve out his sentence following reports that he could be released.

The BBC understands Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, who has terminal cancer, is likely to be freed next week.

A US official told the BBC that they had no information that he was set be released on compassionate grounds.

However, he added that the American position remained that Megrahi should complete his jail term in Scotland.

The Scottish Government is currently considering applications for either Megrahi's transfer to a Libyan jail or his release.

If he is not released because America object how long before everyone disagrees with that. ;)
 

Relatives of the British and American victims of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing are divided over whether the man convicted of the atrocity should be freed on compassionate grounds.

Al-Megrahi is the only man convicted of the worst terrorist atrocity and the biggest mass murder in Britain, and relatives in the US are outraged that the Scottish government is even considering releasing him on compassionate grounds.

Kathleen Flynn lost her daughter. "You don't allow someone who has murdered 270 innocent people to walk away from their prison term. Sorry, it's just not just and it's not fair," she said.

Stephanie Bernstein's husband also died in the atrocity. "I am really absolutely dumbfounded at the idea that the Scottish Government would release him on compassionate or any other grounds. This is the coward's way out," she said.

Al-Megrahi is terminally ill with prostate cancer. The US relatives argue freeing him will make him a hero back in Libya and will send a message that terrorism is not being taken seriously. But in the UK, many relatives of those killed in the bombing have campaigned for his release.

Dr Jim Swire's daughter Flora died on Flight 103 and he has never believed al-Megrahi was responsible. "I think it would be an abominable cruelty to force this man to die in prison in a foreign country, away from his beloved family - particularly as we clearly are not sure that he was involved," he said. "But there are grounds for being concerned, [as] there may have been a miscarriage of justice here."

David Ben Ari is an adviser to some of the victim's families. "I do not believe, and I will never believe, that this man was guilty of the crimes he was charged with," he said. "The American relatives have never accepted anything other than Megrahi's total guilt. Some of them would like him to rot in prison. They accepted a lot of things at the trial which UK relatives questioned, and still question. Megrahi was found guilty on the grounds of probability, not beyond reasonable doubt, and that, on a case of murder, is entirely unsatisfactory."

If there are doubts about how safe the conviction was, then that should be pursued as a separate matter.

The facts as they stand are that the man is a convicted murderer of 270 people serving a life sentence. Had the death penalty been available he would have been hanged 10 years ago and that would have been the end of it. To release after only 10 years would disgrace the memory of those who died, is hardly a fitting punishment (two weeks per life?) and hardly offer a deterrent to other terrorists operating on UK soil.

If this goes ahead then the British justice system really will be a laughing stock...

It's the Scottish justice system that's on trial here though, not the British one, personally I don't think the Scottish ministers have the balls to release him.

US should have no say or influence over the decision - they dont' like the UK challenging anything they do so they can go get knotted.

Personally I think he should stay behind bars though, if there's any reason to query the safety of the conviction it should be investigated but he should stay in prison for now.

exactly, utterly disgraceful. we dont have the death penalty no more, life dont mean life and now we are letting a mass murderer out. 1 murder is bad enough but 27O! he should never of seen the light of day again.

Which of course brings about the age old debate of whether or not you can be sure when carrying out a death sentence.

Given the frivolous nature of his trial, no one could pursue the death sentence for this man with his guilt far from beyond reasonable doubt.

Such acts of mercy help elevate us. The man was jailed and is approaching the end of his life. He has served his time on earth and will be passing shortly. Whether or not he was guilty is irrelevant.

He will be dead soon and will meet his maker. ^^

I see that the cosmetically adjusted Hillary Clinton is insisting that the Scottish Government should start paying more attention to her demands as expressed in "uncharacteristically undiplomatic language"
I just think it is absolutely wrong to release someone who has been imprisoned based on the evidence about his involvement in such a horrendous crime.

She doesn't appear to have expressed any similar views about the crew of the USS Vincennes deliberately shooting down a civilian airliner :confused:

Still, I have no doubt that she is pleased that Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi has dropped his appeal and there is now little chance that any of the "evidence" will be challenged in any court.

Your faith in the legal system is quite touching. It will probably not cause you to question your blind faith but perhaps you might like to read this article and perhaps even the book to which it refers - http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2001/jun/27/lockerbie.features11 ?

At the very least there do appear to be unanswered questions about some of the evidence presented and some of the witnesses do seem quite incredible.

I don't think Mrs Clinton's opinion will carry much sway.

She needs to sound as if she is firing on all cylinders to the US public after her embarrassing rant in Africa the other week and after having her thunder stolen by Mr Clinton with his North Korean visit and help in releasing political prisoners.

Personally, I think she has as much use as a motorbike ashtray and engages her mouth before her brain which doesn't bode well for a foreign secretary.
