LOG: PS3 YLOD Fix

Thanks for all the links, my ps3 just YLOD too, bit annoyed to be honest. can anybody recommend a cheap heatgun to use? it looks like B&Q do a few so your thoughts would be much appreciated! hopefully will give it a go this weekend. just want to get everything off there and transfer it to my bros slim (which he isnt using), deactivate my account and replace back the 40gb and sell. just hope it lives long enough to do that.

is the only way to transfer all data to a new ps3 via the transfer utility over LAN?

You're welcome mate. :D

This is exactly why I put this log together; I realized it was taking a megaton of effort to research so why not let others benefit from it.

I managed to get a heatgun from a local store in the US so I can't be much help there.

As far as transferring your data; if you select the backup utility and backup your PS3 HDD to an external HDD, you can fully restore that specific PS3 but not any other. If you try to restore to another PS3 you will only be allowed to transfer specific items (like user account names and pictures but not demos or any game saves).

From my research there were only two options for a full data transfer to a different PS3 (both options will delete the destination HDD of all data);
(I) connect both PS3s to a router using ethernet cable
(II) connect two PS3s together using crossover cable

5 star thread i have learned stuff i never knew about for if my ps3 slim ever messes up, like the secret eject screw for the disc drive :)

very informative thread nice work think ill get a external harddrive and format it to fat 32 and back up every thing just to be save while my ps3 slim is still working :)

Thanks a lot! Yeah better safe than sorry mate.

I wonder if there's a way to make this thread a sticky?

Ill stick a link to this in the sticky if it helps.
Edit:
I have made a link on the first page of the Sticky to this thread.

is it just me that thinks its pretty crappy of sony to pull the stuff their doing regarding hardrives into other ps3's?

eg take a hard drive out one and it formats unless its put back into the same one, i think thats a pretty poor move on sonys part and pretty pointless, just creates hassle for people that do not want to lose data :(

i have been backing up save points onto my psp memory stick from a lot of games but quite a few games dont even let me do that as well :(

Well i just did the fix with a heatgun and not much luck, had it on for 30 seconds before it died :(, didnt even get enough time to deactivate it.

Might try the hair dryer trick and see if that helps, doubt it will tho. Might give it another go on the weekend but im pessimistic now.

I had super stardust hd, ultra bomber man, SSF2HDR, and the modern warfare 2 map packs linked to the account, and had a 160gb hardrive in there. Will i be able to download these on a new ps3 even though i havent deactivated it? i havent shared any of them too i dont think. Isnt there a part of the PSN store that shows your previous downloads?

Sod the above - hair dryer trick worked! had it on a good 15 mins, saved all gamedata it would let me, and deactivated system on my main account - will need to do it for my US PSN account too. i also deleted all the game installs, saved me a good 10 gig in space. hopefully it will last long enough now to transfer data directly to my bros slim - including protected data. the fans were running quite loud but i did enough i hope. might give the hair dryer another go tomorrow, is it safe to do it repeatedly?

I don't have access to a heatgun, but I do have a soldering iron, will this suffice for reflowing?

Been years since I've done any soldering.... :s

no mate a heatgun or similar is a must - you are reflowing the main chips on the board by melting them - its not like you can individually solder them - i got mine for 20 quid at B&Q, prob cheaper elsewhere

If you read the thread then you'll understand exactly why you need to use a heat gun. You're about to save 300 quid, so I'd say that's worth reading a thread for 10 minutes.

There are other methods like my post #53 in this thread but you need the equipment to solder that method. However that would literally be the most sure fire way of getting a "permanent" fix.

Hi everyone i'm new to this forum, i used this thread for info on fixing my PS3s YLOD theres some great info on here
Just thought if anyone is interested i found a place that reballs PS3 GPUs :) I was looking everywhere on google n found this place retronix.com that reball xbox gpus so i emailed them to ask if they do PS3s n they do! they quoted £55 excluding VAT n shipping (its in scotland) and they even said they can use 63/37 leaded solder! I'm gonna send my PCB to them tomorrow hopefully i'll let you know if its successful

Did a bit of background googling on the company retronix and they seem legit (they're members of loadsa electrical component standards groups, iso 9001 registered) so i've taken the plunge n sent my PCB off to them today, i really hope they are legit! Like i say i'll keep you posted:)

Please do keep us posted mate. May help a lot of people out and save them some greif.

Also let us know if it's overheating (fans blowing higher than usual) and if it ever dies let us know how long it lasted. At a guess... it won't die from heat EVER since they're using leaded solder.

I just had a call from retronix they've done the reball, i just had to pay £85.33 though (which is the £55 + £12 something VAT + £17 something for packing & shipping! ouch my wallet lol) its an expensive procedure over all but here's hoping it's worth it! At least the delivery is next day so I'll be getting the PCB back tomorrow but i won't be able to try out my newly fixed board til about a weeks time as i'm staying at my gf's and my ps3 is at home!
By the way does anyone know how much sony charge for their reflow as a price comparison?

I think it was 160 quid with a 30 day guarantee. What astonished me was that there were tons that failed again a few weeks after their re-flow.

I just can't believe they still claim this isn't a common issue.

IT WORKED!

I managed to go to my mum and dads and fix up my PS3, switched it on and hey presto it worked! The reball was a complete success! £85 well spent and hopefully it'll be a helluva lot more reliable than a £160 reflow from sony :-P I booted a game and the fans were running nice and quiet, tho I didn't have time to play extensively but next week I will give it a thrashing n see how it copes!

Feels good when you get that green light and hear the fans kick on... *angels.... aaaaaaaaahhhhhh*
when i first read this i thought you had a fear of angels or something when i read that 'aaaahhhh' haha but yeah that feeling of relief when your ps3 actually turns on after you've taken it apart is pretty damn sweet, i am guilty of shouting the house down with 'YES! IT WORKS!!" haha

i managed to play God of War III for about 4 hours straight on saturday and watched a film on it on sunday and the ps3 is still going strong :) if it dies any time soon i'll let you know
