Im thinking about getting one of these systems, and just a quick question.

Can I use a Serial Data extension cable

to make the volume control lead longer??

I have a set of Z-5300 (previous to the 5500 i think) and I did exactly the same thing for the cable for my control and also extended the cables (rca leads) for the speakers.

However, the control cable is not a serial data cable (for the 5300 at least). I had to use a monitor extension cable. Couldn't say at all for the 5500 (they may have changed the design), but I can confirm that what you have in mind does work without any problems.

Ive just found out that a normal vga extension cable has only 14 pins, but the logi z-5500 is 15 pins, in 3 rows of 5,, is that right??

If I can find one with 15pins, shall I get a exspensive one? Cos ppl have tried extending the cable and you get a hissing sound or something like that because its not sheilded or something.

But if i cant get a 15pin cable, I will use the one that I got for my monitor that has 15pins, but need to change the one end with a gender changer adaptor

Are you 110% sure I wont damage anything? cos it says dont use a extension cable, Its really is a pain that I need one, cos the sub cant go under my desk cos the pc is there and it will nacker my pc,, so the lead has to travel all the way around to the side of my desk by the wall. I was thinking about going with the z-680 cos that wouldnt mess up my pc and would go under the desk,,, But I would regret not getting the z-5500, just because of a dam cabe

I cant wait untill I get a Z-5500 but I'm broke atm so I wont be able to get it for a while yet :( But might aswell get the extension cable sorted out for it :D

The extension cable I used was a standard (not a thick heavy shielded)monitor extension lead with 15 holes on one end, but 14 pins on the other end. I did wonder about this when connecting it up too...

However, i took the plunge and connected it up and it all works fine. :) The missing pin must not be used for anything as all features (volume, power, fade, sub etc all work properly). Bear in mind this is a 5300. I cannot guarantee at all that it will be identical for a 5500, but they are very similar units so I'd be inclined to think that it would tbh.

Also, just to mention that i have experienced no hissing / inteference / popping / crackling at all as a result of using the extension. :)

Hope this helps you

I wondered this too but the remote of the Z5500 does everything you need (everything from the control centre is on the remote).

One thing though - DON'T PUT THE SUB ANYWHERE NEAR A COMPUTER! - It uses a HUUUGE magnet and unless you want to corrupt your hard disk, I seriously advise (as Logitech do) at least 3 feet away.

Thats why I need the extension cable to get it well away from the pc

I'll try to get one with 15pins to be on the safe side or just get a gender changer adaptor for the vga lead i've got.

If anyone has the z-5500 and used a vga extension cable without any probs, please tell me your experiences, and put my mind to rest

Cable (POD to SUB) is ~80cm off 3 meters. To be honest, thats plenty long enough to keep it well away from pc *with a 3m digital cable your sorted)

Also got pics of the plug at the end if you want them? Will upload now :)

Pic you linked in first post wont work.

thanks guys for all your help and that pic is real useful, thanks. I think I'll need longer then 3 meters cos it needs to travel along the bottom of 2 walls.

But still if anyone has these speakers and using a extension cable for the pod, please let me know guys.

magents corrupt floppy disks so why not harddisks? and the sub has one hell of a big magnet.

It does hdu's though. It is also one of the reasons people worry about watercooling pumps inside cases where they are near HDU's.

i had a 12" lightning audio sitting *right* next to my pc for 2 years. THe magnet is almost as big as the driver itself in the z5500's. No problems. The magnets in hdds are extremely powerful rare-earth magnets. It'd take a lot more than a pouncy little sub to disturb it:p

So not to post another thread I just had a quick query regarding that huge sub and its magnet. Basically at the mo I have a setup as below:

COMP 1 ----- APC UPS Box ------ Sub on my Creative T7900 ----- COMP 2

And that lot is all under me desk. Now COMP 1 and the UPS are rigth next to each other and the distance between the UPS and COMP 2 is around 3-4 feet so I was gonna place the Z5500 sub in the middle but am worried its going to screw up my APC UPS box?? Or can I put it nearer the UPS box and thus away from Comp 2?

Could someone with a Z5500 actually measure the subwoofer would make life easier to see if it will fit.

Mine has been underneath my desk for ages now, no problems whatsoever.

Only about 60CM's under the desk.

Found this pic of the sub on the net,,, I think the sub is 15 inches high, if thats any helps

Thanks for that mate, man it is a beast. But going by that cd case it looks like its gonna fit under me desk :) although I am moving out soon so it won't be an issue then :D.

Would like to know if its going to screw my UPS up though, might have to contact APC see what they say.

Just remember when you get it, dont crank up the volume streight away,, cos subs when new, dont move(vibrate) too good, there quite stiff. So try to resist cranking it up for the first few weeks.

Also ppl has nackered the sub or amp at high volume,,even a burning smell from the sub . But thats quite normal for the burning smell at high volume. But Who would crank the beast to full volume,, I wont be, its all about quality. Having it at such high volume it stresses parts out, and doing that when its new its not a great idea.

Treat it properly then it will last for years......hopefully. By all means crank it up, stretch its legs from time to time
