I wonder how the IRA used automatic rifles, Semtex and mortars during their campaign but these Jihadi's can only muster up a van and a few kitchen utensils. Not saying cutlery isn't effective, but considering the wider appeal and support base, I thought they would be better organised and equipped.

Bad people are armed now while innocent or 'good' people aren't. They access weapons on the black market. If guns were more easily available in the UK I would imagine you would not be able to have one if you have criminal convictions, you would need character references and maybe even psychological evaluation / reference from Doctor that you don't have mental health issues. All weapons would be recorded on a central register with owner details captured.

You're saying the bad people are already armed (which clearly isn't true considering the low levels of gun crime the UK has), yet also saying they wouldn't be able to get hold of guns if there were more of them around legally? Where do you think the illegal firearms come from? There isn't a factory for legal ones and a factory for illegal ones.

If even 1 in 10 people on the streets had an open or concealed carry weapon I'm sure it would make criminals of all stripes think twice.

That doesn't seem to be the case for those countries that permit concealed carry.
