Hi all

As the title says really, I'm looking at one of these and have been reading lots and just thought I'd create a personal thread to settle my mind! I know there are quite a few M3 owners on here  :D

I'd be looking at buying the warranty (full), which is around £1,000 per year and I am pretty sure I've read it decreases slightly with a renewal?

In terms of servicing costs, oil, tyres, brakes etc I'd need to pay out for of course, but beyond that full warranty should cover me in terms of actuators etc?

I'm looking at DCT and EDC spec'd, just wondering if there is any advice you would give when looking at buying one second hand?

I know there is a dedicated BMW, M thread but post often gets lost in there - plus I'd like to bite the bullet soon and I think this thread will help!

Thanks

Nothing specific but if I were paying the running costs of an E92 M3 (fuel especially) I would one something a bit more "special" , then again maybe that is subjective

As far as I'm aware, 60,000 miles is the magic number before the warranty gets expensive/less comprehensive

Thanks for that will have a further read on this. If anyone else could comment, please do!

Like? :D (Few Porches did catch my eye, however worried there is a burning servicing cost which would blow me out of the water :p)

From what I saw the Porsche servicing prices are dirt cheap compared to others in their league. If I recall to service a 997 on a major was something like £600? How much is it on the M3 with insp 2 equivalent on cbs?

You may have seen my thread recently as I bought one last week. In terms of warranty, after 60k miles the price goes up significantly, however I don't think the level of cover reduces until the car is 100k or 10 years old. The full comprehensive warranty covers all the important areas though check the policy handbook as there are some exclusions such as the exhaust but nothing major.

In terms of servicing, it's not terrible but obviously if a number of items come up on cbs at the same time then it could be a bit painful on the wallet.

Here's the pricing I got on BMW's online tool but it would be cheaper to shop around.

In terms of the car itself, stick it in m mode and let the engine rev to 8.5k rpm then come back to me :)

I'm getting the oem exhaust mod done to my car tomorrow by paul from m3cutters as the one criticism I would have is the stock exhaust is a bit too muted for a 4l V8.

There's no set cost, it's entirely dependent on what needs doing at the time, but the E92 is a lot cheaper to service than the E46 by a good margin.

I read in the Porsche thread here that servicing costs were very reasonable, might be worth a bit of investigation before pulling the trigger on the M3.

My Boxster cost me the following over 3 years / 25k of ownership;

£700 pa for warranty (first 2 years were included within the purchase price)
£450 for a single minor service and brake fluid change

Servicing was every 2 years or 20k so I only needed 1 service, had it been a major service it would have cost around an extra £150. In the 3 years of ownership (25k~) I didn't need to replace tyres or brakes.

This is with an OPC warranty that covered pretty much everything (I never paid out for a repair in my ownership).

It was stupidly cheap to run when you think about it.

Not sure about the warranty cost reducing with renewal (although I had heard similar myself), but I paid £760 (I think) for a years comprehensive cover with a £250 excess including BMW Emergency Assistance. £100 excess was ~£960 and £0 excess was £1250. My logic was that it's highly unlikely I'll be claiming twice in the same year, so it makes much more financial sense to go with the £250 excess.

Yes providing you get the full warranty you are covered for throttle actuators and the whole engine going bang, along with everything else other than trim, that's only covered in the first 3 years.

EDC is a must have in my eyes, is able to make the car considerably more comfortable when needed. Mine lives in "Comfort" 90% of the time and only occasionally get puts into "Normal". Never use "Sport" but would do if I went on track. DCT box is fantastic and there's nothing to worry about reliability wise (although warranty will cover any problems).

As I said to SS-89, if you're in SE London am happy to take you out for a ride should you wish to get more familiar with one before purchasing :)

Thanks for the replies guys, had a look at a Porsche and whilst tempting do have my eyes set on an M3! Voxination, that sounds great I may get in touch with you via email on that offer.

Someone mentioned the E92 being cheaper to service than the E46, is this just because its old now or even if they were the same age the E92 is more efficient?

Just looking at Insurance quotes now, vary quite a bit - any in particular you guys are with who are seen as 'lower priced' versus the rest?

Thanks
