Looking for a First Car.

Insurance groups aren't the be all and end all of costs.

You might not save any money going for something I'm a higher group, but it might not cost any more and you'll certainly get a better car than the horrible snot boxes in group 1

there MUST be a broker who can offer a better price... surely!?

Quinn were who I was with in my first year and I got my insurance silly cheap compared to what I'm paying now.

It's just a shame that giving young people cheap insurance (and drive other cars cover from any age) isn't really a viable business plan :p.

Insurance is a strange beast. When I was learning to drive, I started looking around for insurance policies on my Mum's car as a named driver. Most were coming out at around 2-3k, as a named driver on a Mk1 Focus 1.6 LX. Then by chance I stumbled across Co-op insurance who gave me a quote of 700 quid as a named driver. We of course jumped on it (and unlike Quinn, it stayed the same when I passed)! When renewal came up for this policy, I had passed my test and had been driving on my own for about 8 months or so, I was nearly 19 and my Mum had just bought a brand new Focus so I gave her a small sum of money to keep the old one. I then started looking around for insurance, and again, most comparison websites were giving me figures of 2-3k, then, by chance, my Dad got a quote with Admiral Multicar for both my Focus and my Mum's new Focus and it came out at 1500 quid, for both cars, fully comp, albeit with a slightly large excess. About a month after taking out this policy, I got a job as an IT Technician and it went down by 300 quid, so we've ended up going from 3000 quid for just me, third party on the Focus, to both me and my Mum's cars for 1200 quid. Before anyone asks, I am down as the main driver on my car.

Definitely deal with individual sites rather than comparison ones. I've found that the comparison sites give absolutely horrible quotes. Just for info, I'm 19 years old (18 when we took the Admiral policy out), I live in far from a 'good' area for insurance in Witham, Essex and I passed my test in November 2009.

I hope this helps and good luck with finding a good quote :) A bit of patience and luck and you'll find a decent one!

Update: Bought a 2003 Toyota Yaris T Sport, which has done 38k miles, FSH years MOT and tax. It's a five door which I was looking for which is a bonus. Excellent car, quite a bit of power under the hood as well. Paid £3350, maybe a tad much but I'm happy with it.

£3.6k :( Cheapest I could get it.

You are going to pay THREE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED POUNDS to insure a TOYOTA YARIS?

Are you insane?

Thats right in the 'dont bother for a few years' category for me. You'd spend less using minicabs as a personal chauffer service!

Oh. My. God.

I know the rule on no personal attacks but you are a right idiotic ****.

Did you not ring round??? Did you not take advice on what car to buy???`
Escorts, Fiestas, Cordobas, all would be cheaper!!

Ffs some people on this forum just have no brain.

He'll be telling us how he's loaded so it doesnt matter in a minute. So loaded he's driving a 7 year old Yaris.

Sigh.

What you do is you dont buy a 'T SPORT' as your first car. Then you don't need to literally SET FIRE to almost FOUR THOUSAND POUNDS.

Tbh I wanted something I would enjoy driving. It looks good has some power. I know it is A LOT of money to insure a car. But Bradford is really bad for insurance. Having no NCB and doing it on my own name, it is going to be a lot.

I can't really say much else, but for comparison a 1L Micra on a 54 plate was just 100quid cheaper. So I thought might as well get something half decent. Sorry if it upsets any of you.

I think you are just completely crazy. You will have NOTHING to show for that money, its gone.

I really would have simply waited another year or two. How much is a taxi every single day?! Not £3.6k I'd wager!
