Needs to be ADSL as no cable in my village.
Preferably short term contract so I can easily change again if dissatisfied.
I download a fair bit so no low cap service.

Currently with Zen but their legendary customer service was not apparent for me sadly :(

Any recommendations?

I'm surprised that you didn't get good "service" with Zen, I was with them for over a year and had a great service with them, only left because I wanted ADSL MAX 8 but they had a cap on this service, so am now with Fusion Media Networks.

Another good ISP is Nildram. :)

Migrating to Nildram on Wednesday. Will let you know how it goes if you decide that'd you like to switch to them :)

That would be very good of you BeatMaster :)
I did think about using Nildram before I went with Zen so they are still in my shortlist from last time.

No problem at all :) Will bookmark this thread and report back on Wednesday to let you know how it goes. Were going from a 512Kb line to a DSL Surf with Nildram which is 2Mb. They said it should go straight to 2Mb without needing regrading once we've migrated. Here's hoping :o

i was with nildram in my student flat up until a few weeks ago (we moved out) had a good 8mb line and speeds were always over 400k. overnight and in the morning speeds were up to 800k. if you do download a lot then just set the downloads to go between midnight and 8am as they dont count this traffic.

Yeah Nildram are good - I got my ADSL activated with them on Thursday while I wait for NTL to come out and move my cable. So far it's been a very good service with fairly constant speeds.

Definitely get Nildram! I was with Evolution beforehand  and Nildram has been a breath of fresh air! Very low pings, very fast speeds, no signs of aup or fup :) 50 gb peak limit (8am to 11.59pm) and unlimited off peak (12am to 7.59am). I can't recommend them enough mate :)

What are Nildram's customer services like? I heard great things about Zen but it's taken them 4 months to take my connection problems seriously enough to pressure BT into investigating.
What really annoys me about it all is that not one of the techys I spoke to during these 4 months thought my 'issue' was serious enough to warrant making notes about it -rung at least 7 times but no record of this was made at their end [must be normal to be unable to connect/stay connected] so I had a real job to get the issue taken seriously at all.
Guess what: BT have apparently found a fault & are investigating

Been on 56k diallup for 1.5 weeks now & no doubt Zen will still charge me for BB for this period

p.s. I might have been wrong to **** off my DG834G router previously. Lets see what BT come up with ;)

I haven't had the need to use Nildram customer services as everything is A-ok :). However, when their service went down for like, half a day, they had recorded a message so that people did not have to wait in line to talk to a representative and see what was going on. I found that to be nice, since I didn't have that with Pipex or Evolution :)

Oh and also a couple of staff of Nildram post on adslguide and they respond to PMs and stuff :)

1st day of Nildram DSL Surf and it's been a breeze :)

Lovely and quick, easily maxing the line @ 245K/s and snappy websites. This is even before we realised that interleaving was and phoned up. Brother was getting 50ms pings on Counterstrike so rang up and the woman checked and said it was turned on. This is weird as I thought it was just an ADSL Max related thing but obviously not. Anyway, she kindly offered to remove it and to do it for free as I should have been asked about it :)

This should hopefully mean pings of about 20ms

Perfect!

It is.

Be warned, Nildram/Pipex appear to have dodgy peering, and your mileage may vary - especially if you play WoW.

Is there anything to confirm this, I remember when we first got ADSL 3 years ago we got pings of about 20ms but then phoned up our ISP a few times complaining of the internet going down a lot. They could have maybe applied some sort of stability aid such as Interleaving to try and stop our line going down as often.

I'm not too sure, but she did check *supposedly* but if you definately can't get interleaving on a 2Mb ADSL line then I shall ring back tomorrow and complain ;)

with Nilldram at the moment and generally everything seems to be ok. Over the last month or so though there has been the odd few days where some pipex routing has gone a bit funny resulting to 100+ pings to jolt and other servers :(

Interleaving doesn't exist beyond Max. There's nothing stated in any of the (publically available) BT paperwork to confirm or deny it, but the fact no one else has seen it makes it a good likelihood.

It's unlikely your ISP applied any sort of interleaving - it would need to have been done by BTw (assuming it was an ISP using IP/DataStream as opposed to LLU).

Hmm what to do then  Should I ring up Nildram tomorrow and ask whats happening due to this? or phone BT? :o
